this let's cross now to journalist john commons in vienna john it's good to see you the far right freedom party have been in a coalition government in austria before so this is not the first time what impact are they likely to have. well i think we've seen already from the kinds of statements that have been coming out of the coalition negotiations what kind of impact the freedom party the populist far out party here are likely to have in government certainly mr cootes has made some concessions it would same to get this coalition off the ground and as your reporter fairly clearly stated in that package most of those concessions seem to be around the idea of clamping down on immigration and. refugee policy and that kind of thing and also some kind of far reaching reforms in the areas of the social partnership here in austria so i think they're going to be the major themes that will see the freedom party here
1:05 pm
take the lead on ok and the party is potentially getting some of the biggest ministries foreign interior and defense should the european union leaders be worried about this. well certainly the the freedom party leader hans christian strucker is going to be the deputy chancellor here that's for certain they will also as you said at the interior ministry which is a very powerful ministry here in austria and the foreign ministry as well looks like it's going to go to someone who's up a lot a lot allied to the freedom body at least whether or not the european. union should be worried about these i'm not exactly sure i mean it will remain to be seen in what direction the government goes i suppose what's interesting i think is the reaction from europe so far i mean back in two thousand when we had this. this conservative freedom party government the first time around of course the e.u. impose sanctions on austria there were protests there was a huge reaction from brussels and from all across europe this time there's been
1:06 pm
barely a week it's as though the whole political landscape has shifted so far to the right now that this has become simply an ordinary occurrence. ok a different reaction a different situation during the campaign refugees and border security dominated it why did these far right positions go down so well with austrian voters. well i think you have to remember that austria did accept a lot of refugees back in twenty fifteen in fact in terms of population as many years as germany back in that big wave of violence that came across the west balkans and i think there are legitimate concerns about always people that arrived people are concerned about border security they're concerned about the social system here and whether it can carve that can set about finding jobs and accommodation and so on those kinds of concerns are also seen in germany and i think what coolants did very well as you realized very early on that this was about you know that he could play on those kinds of view is that people have and he could
1:07 pm
make that into a winning proposition for the election back in october and so i think that's that's proving to be correct john cummins in vienna thank you now to some of the other stories making news around the world german chancellor angela merkel's by varying conservatives sister party as reelected or c. hall far as its leader but with his weakest support so far he's been under pressure since his party's poor performance in september's elections earlier this month he announced he would step down next year as bavarian governor but remain as party leader. a powerful earthquake has struck indonesia's main island of java killing at least three people and injuring many more the six point five magnitude quake destroyed dozens of homes and fortunate for days to evacuate patients from damaged hospitals. romania is holding a funeral for king michael who died earlier this month after

she's up against deputy president cyril rama poza he's a business friendly trade unionist and one of the wealthiest people on the continent the winner will likely be south africa's next president. for more on this we're joined by journalist philip yvette from the mail and guardian philip thanks for taking the time the race between the two candidates is too close to call there are new developments though this hour that could make it even closer can you tell us about that. well in the next hour of this conference we find. five hours later the reason for that delay some last minute legal action came to me yesterday that has now seen the exclusion of what reach out to be a two point five percent of the voting delegates at this conference keep in mind specter space we could tell the margin between the two even candidates five percent to twenty so things are very close indeed now once the conference gets under way
1:10 pm
we'll get a sense of the kind of arguments that might emerge in terms of which francia still be excluded and the credentials of various delegates both thought by the sides of the party will during that process be try to be getting a hey to a slightly on that count again and then maybe some way towards denying we'll know who the people will actually be who vote full of the next leader of the a.n.c. and only then can we suck even to predict how they might go and certainty even on who can vote for at least candidates but speaking of the two top ones as we mentioned earlier could either of them truly bring about change within the party it's a big question within the soul and of course within south africa as a whole that you can't it is quite different a very different their economic approach is that very different sort of history but the question is with either of them is powerful enough to pull the agency out of
