like germany and the prospects for those returning home. join the discussion on g.w. dot com conference. prospects for returning. to make. this is the wus line from berlin donald trump decision to recognize jerusalem as israel's capital goes to the un the security council will vote tomorrow on a resolution submitted by egypt this as muslims protest against trying to move in demonstrations from indonesia to pakistan to paris to get the latest from the w.c.

maybe it's also coming up. gunmen attack a church in pakistan killing at least nine and wounding dozens the so-called islamic state of claimed responsibility. south africa's ruling party at a crossroads the african national congress seats to heal divisions and restore public trust with the election of a new leader. i'm made of committee welcome to the program the un security council is due to vote tomorrow on a draft resolution on the disputed status of jerusalem the body will consider a text submitted by egypt of to us president donald trump said that washington would recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel now that decision has triggered
9:02 pm
a new surge of violence in the gaza strip and west bank and protests across the muslim world. it's clear who they think the enemy is more than eighty thousand people in the indonesian capital jakarta protested against u.s. plans to recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel. under god but on the decision made by trump is an insult to the muslim world not just to the muslims here in indonesia jerusalem is home to the third most important mosque in the islamic world i think as muslims we have to defend palestine at this level. turkey's president retch uptight ad one had a clear response he says he wants to upgrade turkey's diplomatic presence in east jerusalem to a full embassy in the palestinian territories where the struggle since jerusalem is currently under occupation we cannot go there and open our embassy but our consulate general is represented at ambassador level so we have to factor
9:03 pm
a complex case god willing the day is close when officially we will open our embassy there you israeli prime minister binyamin netanyahu again welcome trump's plan to move the u.s. embassy to jerusalem he condemned egypt's introduction of a draft u.n. resolution that seeks to reverse the move we have. i would like to express once again my special appreciation for the determination leadership of president trump and his administration in defending the truth of israel they reject attempts to use the un as a platform against israel. just days before u.s. vice president mike pence is due to visit israel the deep divisions in the middle east conflict seem more irreconcilable than ever. and for more on this story i'm joined by correspondent who's just actually returned from jerusalem when you were covering the story for us so what exactly is in this resolution that the u.n. will be presenting tomorrow so there's several stipulations and it's
9:04 pm
a very short resolution it's only one page but it basically says that this change in jerusalem status that the u.s. has declared is going to have no legal effect they're calling for it to be reversed and they are reiterating the point that jerusalem status has to be resolved through these negotiations these peace process negotiations that have been stalled since two thousand and fourteen actually and basically reiterating that this has no legal effect and it calls on all other countries not to move their embassy is to jerusalem from tel aviv where all countries who do have business with israel currently keep their embassies and it's worth backing up a step and reminding ourselves why and this is important because jerusalem is a very old city there's a lot of historical religious cultural context to it but basically it's the most important city in israel or in palestine if you think of it that way and it was supposed to be the final piece of these peace negotiations it's what the
9:05 pm
israelis and the palestinians consider their crown jewel which is why there was this preliminary compromise made of splitting the city into into jerusalem an easter islam for the palestinians and the u.s. coming out and declaring that jerusalem is for the israelis and declaring that it is the capital of israel long before any other parts of the process negotiations have been worked out is basically up ending these seven decades of negotiations that have been going on so a great deal of importance not just for the resolution but possibly the decision that comes after that so what happens if they vote in favor of full of the resolution well we have to be honest with ourselves the u.s. is one of the five permanent member members of the u.n. security council they are probably going to veto this they have this veto power that only the five permanent members have at which. point the palestinians who are a nonmember observer state will probably turn to the un general assembly in a vote next year and they will probably put forward a resolution that looks something like declaring east jerusalem as the capital of
9:06 pm
palestine or if they want to shoot for the moon the entirety of jerusalem as the capital of palestine and if we look at the un general assembly is voting record on these sorts of issues they are an extremely pro palestinian body if not very anti israeli body israel is actually the country that the un general assembly and the un security council passes the most resolutions against and we can even think back as recently as two thousand and twelve when the un general assembly declared that palestine was a nonmember observer state which was sort of a tacit acknowledgement of palestine's existence which here too for had not been present at the un right obviously this is coming at a time when us vice president mike pence is set to visit israel on wednesday what kind of reception do you think you'll get well looking at the israeli side he will most likely get a very warm reception but we should remember that this visit was planned long before any of this happened long before this declaration from trump came forward and what was basically supposed to be just a goodwill visit but now we're looking at is
9:07 pm
a much more tense situation of course we've seen the palestinians already refused to meet with him in what was supposed to be a plans a bilateral session with palestinian president abbas and they've already rejected pens coming to visit so but he is likely to get a very warm reception from that's a new government given that this was an issue that was very dear to nothing out his heart to thank you so much for your analysis. and here in germany interior minister thomas timesis says the country should appoint an end to semitism commissioner to counter a growing hate speech against jews and israel in remarks to german media he said every criminal act motivated by active semitism is one too many and a shame for our country and to semitism must never again take hold in germany his comments come days of to protest as in berlin burned israeli flags to protest of the u.s. decision to recognize jerusalem as the israeli capital suicide bombers have attacked

a church in pakistan killing at least nine people and wounding more than fifty hundreds of washer pows were inside the methodist church in the city of quitter pakistani officials say quick action by security forces guarding the church prevented great to bloodshed a church in tatters after two suicide bombers targeted a pre-christian a service in the pakistani city of question. but it could have been a much worse police credit security forces with preventing an even greater loss of life this c.c.t.v. footage shows the moment one of the attackers tried to rush the gates of the church with an accomplice he managed to scale the fence but did not make it into the main building eyewitnesses describe the horrors that followed the murder goodlooking was only first i heard shots firing and then a blast lots of people were injured. i saw a man with

a bullet in his right side he sat down leading badly children and women were also injured. quitter is a city in western pakistan and it has a large christian minority but christians make up less than five percent of the country's total population religious minorities in pakistan have faced attacks by islamic militants over the years this time the so-called islamic state has claimed responsibility. look at other stories making news around the world in kiev supporters of ukrainian opposition figure mikhail saakashvili have clashed with police officers used fire extinguishers to prevent the crowd breaking into a building and setting up a protest center there they were among thousands who turned out to support saakashvili is demanding the impeachment of ukrainian president petro poroshenko.

in chile people are casting their votes in a runoff presidential election the vote will determine whether the country turns to the right with conservative billionaire and former president sebastian pinera or stays on its center left course in areas opponent one hundred is supported by the current president michel. in the philippines tropical storm kai tak has triggered landslides and floods that have killed more than thirty people and left several others missing the slow moving storm passed over the eastern philippines on saturday and officials report every damage to power lines roads and bridges who will succeed south african president jacob zuma as head of his ruling african national congress party thousands of delegates are to decide the answer to that question at a party congress in johannesburg deputy president cyril from a post that is facing off against zuma as ex-wife because as an addendum is the
9:11 pm
winner is seen as likely to succeed jacob zuma as the country's president and there's no clear favorite. well correspondent thomas is following that and a conference for us from johannesburg thomas thank you for joining us so what's the atmosphere like as the delegates choose a replacement for jacob zuma well if you talk about atmosphere in general i would say see typical a.n.c. party meeting with lots of singing and dancing delegates supporting their candidate in songs but it's just a colorful. face underneath the strong song tensions and divisions within the a.n.c. . it's all about two factions in the party one faction supporting of the now president jacob zuma and his favorite candidate his ex-wife and then the lot of people within the party who want to have
9:12 pm
a change in how harsh that fight is being licked you can see always visible when discussions are possible bribery around election promises evolved there was people being that maybe money was being paid by candidates to make it to delegates in their favor so how would that work i mean if someone would get money a bribe to vote in this way all the other person would need to truths that he or she did exactly like that and one option would be using your cell phone take a picture of your ballot paper and send that picture off serious those allegations being taken by the party you can see by looking at the route they were setting up in that room cell phones are not allowed to be in the election process are really that really i think that really tells the story well thomas said describing a pot to that has been riddled in controversy so what does this conference mean for the.
9:13 pm
well i think this party is deeply divided and what we're experiencing now is a fight within the party which is all about one person it's still about the now president shakeups zuma who is also president of the country this person is facing a long long list of allegations around fraud and corruption a colt already ruled that he was violating the constitution of the country by using takes money to run away to his private home the list of those allegations is that long it's even difficult to remember all of those cases so what we see is a fight to run through on its merits by the main candidates within this election that is one to one side through on the pows or who has been promising to fight corruption within the party and on the other hand jacob zuma ex-wife. who awarded kind of avoided to talk about corruption in the party that's when many
