report also coming up turkish a german journalist mashallah tolu is out of jail as an it's done full court orders her and five others released but they still face terror charges will get the latest . austria's new prime minister is sworn in adding a right wing coalition he's pledged to get tough on immigration but thousands turned out in protest. i'm sumi so much going to good to have you with us on this international migrants day we are looking at an astounding number there are an estimated sixty six million people around the world who have been forced to leave their homes seventeen percent of them are in europe the greek island of lesbos for example is now home to thousands of micro some the main camp there is the more rio refugee camp but it is those who are outside the camp in makeshift homes who live in particularly squalid
1:02 pm
conditions and tensions with the local community are rising dip is all over south has this exclusive report from less. can barely move his fingers it's the morning after another cold night on the greek island of lesbos. and his friends ran out of firewood long ago. they'll use what's left of this cardboard box to heat today's first cup of tea. from iraq he's been here on the island of lesbos for two months now in a makeshift camp just outside the morea refugee camp. we are many. through but we. are
1:03 pm
different here just. next door is the official camp it looks like a high security prison made for refugees that have come to the greek islands in the hopes of continuing on to north and europe they have to wait here until their asylum applications have been processed authorities strictly for bit filming here who are ever you'll look you'll see garbage and thesis and people living right in the midst of it the refugee camp is full far beyond its capacity and with more people arriving than leaving conditions here are getting worse every day. wants to show us what's happening inside the camp so we follow him with a hidden camera. the air is filled with the stench of smoke garbage and feces. the united nations high commissioner
1:04 pm
for refugees or u.n.h.c.r. recently said that moria was dangerous for women and children but they are the ones who must stay here. it seems like a miracle that epidemics haven't spread within the camp yet. please don't give. me. what. you see. many refugees have taken matters into their own hands to stay warm knowledge that it's getting colder they simply lied old trees. these trees belong to local residents feel this and still use visits his fields he has to struggle to maintain his composure. well off to come in then about all these trees are burnt anybody
1:05 pm
there's nothing left of these trees won't grow again they're finished there are one hundred twenty trees and now there's only four of all of the others and nobody cares the authorities won't stop this they got in a fight or compensate us every night these people cut down the trees and burned them. there with. the village of moria is in a state of emergency. in other villagers me to regularly and to discuss ways to deal with the situation with. the local mayor nikos truck haley's has just returned from talks with the greek government in athens the news isn't good. if the situation goes on like this it won't take long before we have physical confrontation up to now we are tolerating the looting of people's assets and it's fortunate that things haven't become violent yet. but it's a matter of time before that happens. ahmed
1:06 pm
al majid left his country to escape violence he doesn't want to be lumped together with lawbreakers he wants to leave less because but for now a ferry ticket to athens remains just a distant dream. that report from oliver salih who has returned from les posen joins us here in our studio thank you all ever we saw that you filmed secretly inside that camp tell us more about what you saw and experienced there well first of all this refugee camp was initially set up for two and a half thousand people only and now there are more than six thousand migrants living inside that camp and you have to imagine this feels like being in a small town almost in spite of that area being quite small it takes you maybe only five minutes to walk through there but six thousand people that means this is the size of a small town with people trying to follow their daily routines there even cooking their own open fireplaces they're trying to you know to sleep to have to have lunch
1:07 pm
breakfast and dinner and certainly they also need senate terry facilities but for some reason the garbage is not really put away the containers that exist there are completely overcrowded and you've seen the images of the of the senate terry conditions of the of the toilets in there where they didn't even have running water for that reason they brought their own water bottles you know to wash their hands and so on and so forth so i seen really terrible hygiene conditions worse than than i've ever seen them in any refugee camp before and what's particularly interesting is that this is an officially run camp we're not talking about a makeshift camp we've seen all these muddy sites there at the greek methadone ian border one or two years ago and that's understandable that the conditions there are bad but this is an officially run camp as you said it's amazing that disease hasn't spread more widespread than it has already you also showed in your report that there is a lot of potential conflict for. with the local community there struggling as well
1:08 pm
that's right you know we've just met field is in that report person who was you know cultivating all of trees there and he was actually owning the parcel right next to all the lands right next to the refugee camp where people would come because they don't have electricity because they don't have heating see installed in every of the containers they live in so they try to you know steal all of the trees burn them use them for for doing a camp fire and so on and so forth and in addition to that he was also a shepherd and he told us that forty of his sheep were killed in recent weeks and even found what he things is proof for that being carried out by refugees a backpack of the u.n.h.c.r. and a knife and they're grilling him barbecuing this these sheep they're on his all of groves so a lot of frustration there understandably but at the same time you have to see that we followed our protagonist for dinner and he only gets you know
1:09 pm
a slice of bread and a small piece of cheese so they go to bed hungry they're even fights over food in that camp and understandably again that they tried to solve the problem somehow and some even stealing the sheep as a result of that dire conditions that you're saying and you mentioned that you were in the greek macedonian border two years ago it seems not much has changed well it has changed for north and europe of course because all we what we can see there on the greek islands is a result of the e.u. turkey deal that means that migrants coming to the islands of greece are contained there and they can only move forward once their request for asylum is being processed as a result of that here in north and europe the numbers of migrants have reduced significantly but at the same time at least this is how they tell the people their field their islands are sacrifies in this because we have every tens inhabitant of that island being a migrant now and the local community is really struggling and the migrants as well
1:10 pm
due to these other salad with that exclusive report there from last post thank you all are very much. for now a turkish german journalist facing trial in istanbul has been released on bail along with five other defendants the court's move came after the prosecution requested for michelle or told him to be freed she's accused of being a member of an armed terrorist organization and of spreading terrorist propaganda she was working as a reporter and translator for a left wing turkish news agency when she was arrested at the end of april told us three year old son lived with his mother in prison for several months. and during jones has been in the courtroom watching proceedings for us he joins us for more hidari and i told you has been released on bail tell us more about this decision. well as we speak she's traveling back to the prison where she's being held she will then be officially released and will be rejoined joining
1:11 pm
with her family including her three year old son but it is only a conditional release she will have to stay in the country she will have to check in with a colt once a week as this court case against her is continuing has been adjourned it will restart in april where she will still face very serious charges and the possibility of fifteen years in jail what was the reaction in court very. well the courtroom was packed they had many german writers politicians were there the ambassador and there was a collective smile went around the courtroom as the decision by the cold came through to conditionally released them it's been a lot of pressure built up all over the case. ali result tolu speaking to the press solved the words he expressed his happiness but there was also he was some anger as well saying a year had been stolen from him and his supporters lawyers over this case and he's insisted on the innocence and the absurdity that the case is still going on but
1:12 pm
going forward he seemed very happy at the prospect that all the family will be reunited. and he said there will be some celebrations tonight also a german member of parliament. from the left party she too was very happy at that is he should she believes it easily. but she was very unhappy at the fact that the case is still going on and also stress that there are still a number of german nationals still being held in jail what she called political hostages. and after a german turkish relations could this be a sign that the tide is possibly turning. well i think there are concerted efforts in the last to stop relations getting any both sides realize that this secret ration was far getting out of control the german foreign minister making a surprise visit last month where he sat down with his turkish counterpart that seemed to be the start of a process we've seen some movement some gestures coming from both sides we had the
1:13 pm
german chancellor speaking to the turkish president earlier this month over the possibility of more money be released to help with the refugee deal possibly a billion euros this would mean a decision by german colt last few weeks ago to end the prosecution of some turkish . charges that. were going through. independent but we do see that there does appear to be a process where both sides at least don't want to get any worse and then possibly talking about normalization up before that happens still there are a number of german nationals in jail most notably. german journalist he still hasn't even been charged and he's coming up now to a year in jail a lot of pressure on him to be released before anyone can talk about things getting anyway any better. correspondent dorian jones following court proceedings for us there thank you dorian. now to some other stories making news around the world the belgian trial involving the only surviving suspect of the two

thousand and fifteen attacks in france has been postponed the delay is to give his newly appointed lawyer time to prepare to slam is currently in a french prison for his alleged involvement in the attack that killed one hundred thirty people in paris. the israeli military confirms it has carried out air strikes in the gaza strip targeting a hamas training compound it is in response to new rocket attacks from the palestinian territory and militants have stepped up rocket fire since u.s. president donald trump's decision to recognize jerusalem as israel's capital. in south africa thousands of members of the ruling african national congress party are voting to decide who will succeed president jacob zuma as head of the party deputy president cyril ramaphosa is facing off against zoom us ex-wife. zuma the winner is likely to succeed jacob zuma as the country's president. the new government has
1:15 pm
been sworn into power in austria making it the only western european country with a far right ruling party in its coalition that's because the new chancellor sebastian cortes has teamed up with a populist freedom party together they are pledging to tighten immigration policies while maintaining a strong commitment to the e.u. but the inclusion of the freedom party in the government has sparked protests as thousands gather in vienna. has been following the story from brussels for us hi max what does this mean for europe. well it means a for the european union that there's a mixed message coming from austria there's potentially some good news in there for example there seems to be a clear commitment by the new coalition to the european union saying for example in their program that a strong austria can only exist in a strong europe and that involves a party of the freedom party that only a couple of years ago played with the idea of exiting the european union altogether
1:16 pm
but on the other hand difficult message also because this will most likely deepen the rift that we already have between eastern europe and western europe on the topic of migration relocation that countries like germany italy greece are in favor of a quota meaning that every country in the european union would have to take in migrants according to a certain quota not countries like hungary in poland are strictly against that and now with this new coalition in austria they most likely will be on the side of hungary and poland because their program indicates that they will toughen up generally speaking on immigration rights a mixed messages there from austria max keep right there will be coming back in just a moment but as we heard the coalition government backs a tougher immigration policies and that you have already been working together to put this into practice newcomers in the country are already feeling the effects let's take a look. welcome to austria
1:17 pm
a region ruled for the past two years by the far right freedom party and the conservative party. who is iranian has applied for asylum here her first application was turned down and she's now waiting for the outcome of an appeal. the uncertainty is troubling her. it's sometimes difficult. because you think so like to make plans. do something important and work and be in a relationship. but you always have these things holding you back. is receiving some support from a local organization called do won't do it helps asylum seekers like her find their feet sometimes through joint activities such as visiting christmas markets. it's remarkable that she had the courage to come here on her own and try to lead
1:18 pm
a totally normal life. much as currently training to be a geriatric nurse. she wants to start afresh in austria. i'm well educated i've studied and i've persevered with that too and i'd really like to do something for austria because austria is somehow my home now i am at this despite being well educated it's not clear whether my will be allowed to stay the two parties governing upper austria are now in charge of the whole country both oppose immigration that's a local far right mayor makes clear what is in the midst of the freedom party will be in charge of the interior ministry as well as integration will satiny prioritise things that have already been negotiated and that will lead to a restrictive integration on the cylon policy which is a good thing. in upper austria the right wing freedom party has reduced benefits for asylum seekers and increased video surveillance social organisations worried
1:19 pm
that such policies will not be adopted throughout australia. or noticing in upper austria that the social climate is becoming colder i say this is especially at christmas time we need to take care of that we don't rob people of their dreams and opportunities dreams and opportunities depend on having a secure job secure childcare secure accommodation and they depend on affordability . matias hopes for a new start in austria are as alive as ever but their chances of achieving them seem to be fading high let's bring back last health in brussels next in austria doubling down on immigration what will the e.u. do in response you have to make a clear difference here between national measures that in line with austrian law constitution and with the bill will of the voters even if some people don't like it this prayer only is the will of the voters because this coalition won a comfortable majority and there and acting the program that they campaigned on and
1:20 pm
so that's one part of it and the other part of it of course are e.u. regulations e.u. official decisions and that's when they come back to the migration quota again because this was an official council decision and it was backed up by the highest e.u. court the european court of justice and now ignoring what the european court of justice and what the council said that the different member states have to do as hungary in poland are doing and maybe austria will do as well that's a whole different ball game that's a huge problem for the european union and it is the reason why this is the most contentious issue in the european union now leaders only last week agreed that they will try to figure this issue out next year until june two thousand and eighteen if they make it it will have to be some kind of compromise although the outlines of that compromise are not there reclear yet meanwhile max leaders tomorrow donald tusk are set to meet with australia new chancellor very briefly if you can what is
1:21 pm
that on the agenda probably more symbol than substance apparently quotes who's well known here for miss time as the foreign minister of austria just wants to make it clear that he's very serious about his commitment to the european union in spite of the difficulties about migration that are looming. health month for us in brussels thank you max. now swedish furniture giant ikea this come under fire for possibly a avoiding taxes monica and that also has to do with the differences within the e.u. in terms of tax schemes now the european union has launched an investigation into ikea as tax arrangements in the netherlands e.u. investigators want to find out if two deals between the furniture giant and dutch authorities give the swedish an illegal advantage over other companies here says the dutch tax deals are in accordance with e.u. rules the swedish company of course is only the latest to come under scrutiny for tax irregularities so far the focus was mainly on u.s.
1:22 pm
multinationals such as apple or starbucks for more let's cross over now to our financial correspondent. standing by for us in frankfurt this probe into ikea is somewhat closer to home than starbucks or apple what's the word of the floor how serious is it. while traders here at the trading floor in frankfurt are calling it actually very serious even though i also have to tell you they're keeping mostly an eye today on the blue chip index the dax with the class of more than two hundred percent but talking again about ikea they are taking it seriously because remember that there have been other investigations already in the past you mentioned starbucks you also mentioned amazon and apple because of their tax model they had to pay an enormous amount of thirteen billion a year also true of the european union quite a big amount of course also for a company like yukio but of course now it's too early to say if this is also going to happen to ikea investigations will start and when all of those investigation of
1:23 pm
the european union can take sometimes a very long time and of course this time a close neighbor the netherlands is certainly in focus what does this mean for the dutch tax system. well there might have to rethink if their tax system is really up to date and also. have to take a closer look if they might have to change something about their business model because also for customers a company with the image of not paying taxes is not really much appreciated like here it works like that that those stores they don't belong to ikea those are french shies companies and they are paying a fee of three percent of their income to another company off called systems and regulators are criticizing this and because of that it's not paying enough taxes by the way a very interesting number of the european union is saying that because of those tax

a models they're losing every year between fifty to seventeen billion euros of tax money that's quite a lot there in frankfurt thank you so much there's. most of you will know that classical music is an integral part of german culture and did you know that it extends all the way to the country's corporate culture so many people play musical instruments here that it is not unusual for large companies to have their own orchestras playing together is not just fun it also boosts team spirit and that's always good for the bottom line. what you heard of vite complicates the bottle she leads sixty accountants engineers and i tease specialists they have all swapped their computers for cellos violins flutes and assumes they are the s.e.p. orchestra maybe not as well known as the company's corporate software products but
1:25 pm
an important part of the business nonetheless. for what's called in the company that wants to advance and be successful it is very important that people are in harmony with each other that they are able to work in a team and cooperate there's no activity in the world where you have to react so quickly to each other and work together so well as an orchestra. that's because each musician depends on his colleagues to achieve that perfect harmony they have to listen to each other respond at the right time and be well trained and prepared. gives you like essence of the. sense that you have to practice if you want to get folks right. like teaches you that you can't wait until. to kind of. practice or like. to be successful and
1:26 pm
that's how it all fits together as a pm schubert bush and yes the german auto parts maker has its own orchestra too in fact many of germany's largest corporations are tuned in among them tonnes of siemens chemical firms b a s f and all of the auto makers diameter b.m.w. and folks walking out. it is in the german d.n.a. it is not unusual for people in germany to play musical instruments all those people playing an instrument are organized within the german music federation which has nine million members more than the german football association and. that should make sure there's enough musicians for generations of company orchestras keeping the economy. so many talented people not just in german orchestras spitta also in sports to me that's right monica also on the water
