a rebirth of patriotism prosperity and pride and we are returning to the wisdom of our founders will have more on trump's vision for his country and what this could mean for the rest of the world also coming up south africa's ruling a.n.c. party alexei new leader to succeed jacob zuma it was a tight race but ciro came out on top and is now in prime position to run for president in twenty nine t. and it freed after eight months in a turkish prison authorities released the german journalist mashallah tolu but they say she is not allowed to leave the country. it's good to have you with dogs it was billed as
9:02 pm
a speech on the united states' new national security policy but president donald trump offered many familiar messages in a major foreign policy speech that was delivered this evening now that included the chance to ising past u.s. leaders for failing to protect america's national interest. and promising to pursue a doctrine of america first outlining his strategies for main pillars valent to boost homeland protection promote american prosperity demonstrate military story and to advance u.s. influence in the world. we want to go down to washington our correspondent cars to phenomena is on the story for worse good evening to you karsten trump launching a blistering attack on previous leaders policies in that speech what did you make up. this was a very dark speech almost election campaign speech harking back to his
9:03 pm
inaugural address almost a year ago when he was also talking about the forgotten men and women in this country about american konitz about the failures of previous governments who allegedly had neglected america's national security america's economic interests the military and so on and so on so that was all back there there was no positive vision of how to deal with globalization instead on the trump asserted himself as a kind of chief protector of the american people against an evil words outside so you could clearly see that donald trump was also abandoning at least to some extent the seventy years of u.s. foreign policy year whereas previous u.s. governments said even believed really in multinational frameworks
9:04 pm
stable alliances to promote american interests even if they had to foot the bill for it the idea was that if it was in the interest of the united states it was good cheaper than going to war like in the first and second world was going to trump doesn't believe in that he believes in a trance actual policy and not in win win situations. and he also believes that there are two emerging powers that are threatening america's germany in the world let's take a listen to what he said about china and russia we face rogue regimes that threaten the united states and around lines we face terrorist organizations transnational criminal networks and others who spread violence and evil around the globe. we also face rival powers russia and china that seek to challenge american influence values and wealth. we will attempt to build
9:05 pm
a great partnership with those and other countries but in a manner that always protects our national interests now there's a lot of squaring of circles to be done here karsten i mean how can trump reconcile partnerships with china and russia with his america first policy that he just laid out. what he believes in a case to case partnership where it benefits the united states or where they can work together like the us shared intelligence about terrorist attack a planned terrorist attack in russia and the russians and the americans work together and this goes both ways i guess because they have become an enemy to those islam is terrorist networks but it was quite interesting to hear that mentioned china and russia in particular i guess this is due to the influence of some people on his foreign policy and national security team who look at china and russia as
9:06 pm
real competitors because we know that trump for instance likes and even at my a strongman like putin ping so that was quite interesting but basically once again it shows donald trump's view of the world he talked about a new era of competition and this is how he sees foreign policy and what about these pillars of his national security strategy. well quite clearly one of the most important maybe de most important is the economy he talked about the fact that for him national security is economic security that he wants to liberate the american economy as he put it that he wants to work against what he calls unfair trade that yes can be unfair terrace climate accord and so on so basically he wants to make america strong as an economic power and from there. it's military strength for. our correspondent in washington on the

story for us tonight first in phenomena carsten thank you very much. we're staying in the u.s. at least six people are dead many more injured after a train derailed near seattle in the state of washington emergency services say the death toll is expected to rise and the governor has declared a state of emergency on what should have been a groundbreaking day for washington's railways. the high speed amtrak train was making its first ever run along a new route when it hurtled off an overpass about sixty kilometers south of seattle and onto the highway below crushing cars and trucks seventy eight passengers and five crew members were aboard when the southbound train derailed just before eight o'clock in the morning police describe the counted. cars and trucks were struck by train cars that left the train tracks and went down onto the road the people that were in all the vehicles even though when you see the pictures it's pretty horrific
9:08 pm
at this point nobody vehicles. are all contained to the train local authorities said that the new high speed service in washington state could be dangerous and of the trains journey showed it was traveling faster than the maximum recommended speed when the accident happened. when today saw one of the most important changing of the guard imposed apartheid south africa the country's ruling african national congress elected a new leader deputy president cyril ramaphosa defeated president jacob zuma is exwife in a closely fought race taking him a big step closer to south africa's top job now all of the agencies last three leaders have gone on to serve as south african president. calmly. to. have fifty two percent of the vote went to surreal
9:09 pm
ramaphosa a narrow majority but a lot to celebrate for his supporters he's promising them a new start for the crisis hit and see a declaration of war on corruption in the party that must seem like a threat to this man jakob zuma until now chairman of the n c he's facing a long list of charges among them enriching himself and fraud. zuma had hoped his ex-wife to cause a son zuma would win so that he could get off unpunished according to his opponents at the party congress zuma once again tried to divert attention from the corruption charges against him. and corruption in the private sector. in government and must be dead with decisively by law enforcement agencies. as
9:10 pm
a party veteran ramaphosa is himself parts of the system but many believe in his drive for change his supporters cherish one quality above all what they see as his solid competence on the economy ramaphosa rissa successful businessman and one of south africa's richest men. we want to go now to think so come along he is serving the a.n.c. congress force in south africa good evening to you so let's talk about the new leader of the inseam mr rahman polls i mean that he has a watch on his plate right now he's got to regenerate this party he's got to put south africa's economy back on the map can he do all of that it. is a bit difficult task force or them of course is who knew that there were two sides one sides what sort of his promise of monsoon in the other one is what you will see when you look at the top six so it wasn't to say meeks his deputy is from the other side in the second to none of the parties from the other side what sort of try and
9:11 pm
get these people wouldn't get them the bequests and able to say we'll do it again when they were complaining this. print that there's in different reasons in terms of how they want to put the economy out there but they want to oppose units within the a.n.c. they know it is time course we'll try and get that in the same room and try to come up with it but you see that weeks or it direction of the people so it is of course but nevertheless it is a person who is respected by the market i played the business so he's going to be able to give him some support in terms of. the country but in terms of the need to be in the mc is still a big the same india and what does this mean for jacob zuma his influence as well as is his legacy. it's not that this is a rigid set up down is that in supposed to but you're it means he stayed with us which
9:12 pm
means he still controls the focus is on trust the news does but of course we know that the highlight was within the a.n.c. so whatever legacy that president zuma would want to move to leave behind if he has not done it yet he's not going to be able to do it because people or what sybil in did not point out and so much will remain with this one what the been put into those images that don't. continue to do that so what about president zuma is leaving behind the lic is so many of those who they are saying is been corrupt he's been kept up by the group doesn't all those that it wants it will change that the. soulful zuma ok eat to the bit go time. all right too so observing the a.n.c. congress vote for us tonight from south africa thank you very much the german journalist must tolo has been released from prison in turkey after nearly eight
9:13 pm
months in detention however she's only been let go on the condition that she does not leave the country tolu was charged with being a member of a terrorist organization and publishing terrorist propaganda following a failed military coup back in july twenty sixth. a day of celebration for mashallah tolu supporters and legal team after more than seven months in custody in turkey the judge has decided to release the thirty three year old german on bail. a bit now i am happy again but this has been a bad year for me i certainly won't forget twenty seventeen it will help any. mashallah told it was arrested in her apartment in istanbul in april she's since been held in a women's prison along with seventeen other defendants she was accused of being a member of the extreme left turkish communist party which the authorities classify
9:14 pm
as a terrorist organization mashallah tolu denied all the charges when the trial began in october. she should have been freed earlier even the public prosecutor asked for her release he knew the allegations against her were not sustainable. we're happy that inshallah toluene has at least been allowed out and we will continue the legal fight to have her acquitted that is the damages the judge's decision is only a temporary release until a verdict is processed the trial is due to continue in april next year in the meantime mashallah tolu is not allowed to leave turkey. are one of hole in our correspondent now you'll hear han she's standing by for is in ystem bor good evening to you earlier so we know then that the journalist has been released what more do we know tonight. well she is out of detention she is free and she was able to reunite with her family her father her husband who
9:15 pm
brought flowers and most of all her two year old son sara khan who was of course desperately waiting to see his mother again she then gave a short press conference at her lawyers office saying that she indeed is very surprised about the court's decision because she says in today's turkey you can never be sure of anything so it seems like she didn't expect her to be released today of course this is a release pending trial she has to report to the authorities regularly she can't leave the country so her trial is not over yet the story is continuing but she is well she is out and that's i think what is counting for her and her family today and her release what does that mean for the other journalists who were in turkish prisons especially the other german prisoners. well that is now more hope for the other german prisoners as far as we know there
9:16 pm
are at least eight german citizens allegedly behind bars in turkey for political reasons one of them of course being german turkish journalist and his huge out there is now hope that in their cases some developments are going to happen as well that's the general mood here today officer the decision to release michel it's and we know that these arrests of german nationals they've been disastrous for german turkish. relations is what we're seeing today is that a hint that an improvement may be on the horizon. well that's the general interpretation here that this is going to further ease tensions between germany and turkey but i'd say this is nothing close to getting back to normal too much damage has been done and german authorities also today again reiterated that they will continue to press for the release of all other

germans who are imprisoned here for political reasons so this is going on our correspondent yulia on the story for us tonight in istanbul yulia thank you very much. a new government has been sworn into power in austria making it the only western european country with a far right party in its ruling coalition now that's because the new chancellor sebastian cortes has teamed up with the populist freedom party together they're pledging to tighten immigration policy while maintaining a strong commitment to the european union but the inclusion of the freedom party in the government has sparked protests as thousands gathered today in vienna. i back here in berlin now it's time for some business news and look who is here funnies back on the beat force or starting with ikea brands the european union has launched an investigation into a kiss tax arrangements in the netherlands they could have given the swedish
9:18 pm
furniture giant a fair market advantage and may have to foot the bill that certainly little pricea than its cheap bookshelf. ikea's known across the globe for its practical and inexpensive home furnishings the company also strives to have a low tax bill but the european commission believes ikea took advantage of questionable tax loopholes in the netherlands. we have concerns that to touch the tax rulings from two thousand and six and two thousand and eleven may have allowed enter ikea to pay less tax and given them an unfair advantage compared to other companies subject to the same national taxation rules in the netherlands which would confirm it being breach of a few state rules. the alleged tax avoidance model apparently allowed the furniture giant to pay little or even no taxes during some years but ikea insists that its tax deals in the netherlands did not breach e.u. laws the debate over e.u.
9:19 pm
taxi vince isn't new the netherlands ireland and luxembourg are among the countries attracting multinationals with favorable tax models besides ikea apple and starbucks are among the big names taking advantage of such tax schemes the european commission has now launched an in-depth investigation into ikea's tax deals and then the loans if the allegations of irregularities are confirmed could be hit with a large bill for back taxes. as you have just sort is not the only company facing an investigation our correspondent brussels has more. the commission ordered apple for instance to pay thirteen billion euros to ireland it ordered amazon to pay two hundred fifty million to luxembourg and i'd say we're more in the territory of amazon here and the reason is this a three percent of turnover from all over the world of ikea shops has been
9:20 pm
channeled to a holding in the netherlands now a substantial part of that money between two thousand and six and two thousand and eleven was then transferred to luxembourg and really looking at hundreds of millions here and that money has been the zero tax paid on that money and then we're looking at another case an even more creative where tax was avoided involving lichtenstein both cases currently being investigated and they are moving to different company facing challenges the company beyond humphrey bogart said during cousin blanca and harrison ford's headgear in the indiana jones movies is ben cropped union officials say a court has thrown out a rescue plan for italian hatmaker ports that legal and put the company into administration and investment funds took control of the struggling hatter two years ago but its act first to save the company failed but is that the no was founded in

one thousand fifty seven and its heyday wasn't in one thousand twenty thousand produced two million a year. no more threat back to you. thanks very much actually no back to me. it's back to me now i'm told let me ask my producer where we're going. back to business news serve out the delay talking about africa a second chance that's for thousands and thousands of people looking for in the nigerian city of lagos many of them come from rural areas in the hope of finding work and a better life the makah city already has over eighty million people and attracts thousands of new migrants every day now of this swelling population is putting the city under intense pressure. lagos the place you go to follow your
9:22 pm
dreams or at least in search of a better life thousands of one to move here every day. one of them is nora she came here eight months ago to sell children's clothes little sister. is not in a constant. just bring it on. people. but the influx of people has left the city bursting at the seams. congestion is a huge problem for many people commuting takes up a large portion of their day. i.t. specialist kamikazee has to get off track of doing to get to work on time. is about twenty kilometers. sometimes takes about. lagos is now home to an estimated twenty one million people the city's rapidly rising population is proving
9:23 pm
a headache for urban planners. to deal with. adequate. sanitation your plan for certain population and the plan before you even start implementation that number has increased if the numbers continue at the rate people have mentioned of people community leaders on a daily basis twenty five years from now with the crisis the city's infrastructure is ready proving inadequate and with relatively few opportunities elsewhere in one thousand the population of lagos will only continue to soar. the right time to bring in our correspondent young philip schultz in lagos young slip you live in lagos so how do you experience the effects of migration on a daily basis. well i'm in the lucky situation that a lift in one of the better neighborhoods in ghosts so i can only experience the
9:24 pm
effects and let's say in a very soft way if i was a resident of one of the many growing slum syrian lego's i could probably tell you a different story but of course there are facts that everybody experiences in lagos no matter of poor or middle class or or super rich and this is of course above all the crazy traffic here it's probably the best indication that the infrastructure of this city is really not made for the amount of people that come to live here yesterday for example and this is really not an exaggeration i had to give up my own travel plans already at the parking lot of my apartment building because i couldn't even get out of the gates because there was so much traffic that i just had to wait for a few hours to try again and then i was a little bit more lucky. you just describing basically effects of this influx of people but didn't really have an alternative for a better life today we have a second chance that they want maybe
9:25 pm
a few of them have but i would say probably ninety five percent unfortunately don't have it's because there is simply not enough jobs in lagos and the few jobs that exists are usually given to people that have the right connections and so on and of course those migrants coming from villages or or from small towns they're usually not the people with the right connections so it's very difficult. to find a job here and you can see it every day especially now in the christmas period the amount of the number of street beggars here is increasing every day and of course this is also part of the truth a lot of young women that come to lagos they end up in prostitution. that's it for us reporting from lagos and now that's the business news that they find out that you talk about
9:26 pm
a guy you like i think funny his name is leno messi and he's no stranger to awards and the bar so low before it has added two more trophies to his cabinet he picked up awards for being the spanish league's best player in top goalscorer last season messi netted thirty seven goals for barcelona but his team just missed out on the title to rielle madrid the are dreidels face off in the classical on saturday with table toppers barca this time boasting eleven point advantage over fourth place real. well you may not expect a basketball player to lead his feet do the talking but that's exactly what cleveland cavaliers superstar le bron james did on sunday the fourth time in b.p. has been a longstanding critic of u.s. president donald trump and he wore a message on issues aimed at what he called the man at the helm and his most recent game in washington d.c. take a look here he is i catching shoes with one black one white guy blind you here
9:27 pm
they were in blazing with the words equality although james didn't mention trump by name when asked about his vote where his target was clear the game was played just a mile from the white house and the player has repeatedly criticized calling him un presidential and divisive any can't shoot hoops. here's a reminder of those top stories that we're following for you south africa's ruling african national congress has elected cyril ramaphosa as its new president paving the way for him to become the country's unlikely next head of state the sixty five year old is one of south africa's richest citizens and the german journalist it's all a total who has been released from prison in turkey after nearly eight months in detention she will not be allowed to leave the country however. after a short break i'll be back to take you through the day stick around for that. bueller
