opposed it will get reactions from our correspondents in washington and jerusalem also coming up counting the votes in catalonia as crucial election and michelle exit polls are predicting another absolute majority for the region's approached independence parties what would that mean for madrid's hopes of putting to rest months of political crisis. i bring coffee it's good to have you with us we start in new york tonight where the u.n. general assembly has overwhelmingly passed a resolution asking the united states to withdraw its decision to recognize to roussel him as israel's capital and an emergency session on thursday one hundred twenty eight of the one hundred ninety three member states voted in favor of the motion with only eight countries voting with the u.s.
9:02 pm
that's despite a threat by u.s. president donald trump to cut u.s. aid to countries that backed the measure palestinian president mahmoud abbas held the decision as a victory for his people. and for more on that now we are joined by our correspondent in washington carson phenomenon and our correspondent in israel tanya kramer to both of you good evening karsten let me start with you the u.s. has been defeated or at least embarrassed in this vote what now i mean is washington licking its wounds. from ministration is doubling down on his decision concerning jerusalem as had to be expected there have been no tweets or other statements from the president himself so far but vice president mike pence just tweeted on the president trumped the u.s. expects our allies to stand with us thank you to the countries that recognize our

right to determine where we put our embassy and with that he echoed some points that nikki haley the u.s. ambassador to the u.n. made earlier today in which she said this was a question of whether countries respect or disrespect the united states but i quite don't get that really to be honest because of course the u.s. has the rights to decide where its embassy to israel is located but also other countries have the right to disagree and to criticize this move and if you actually look at the countries that went with the united states here this list is nos very impressive we have got somalia on dura. the marshall islands and of cause is where this is not a very impressive coalition of the willing. and speaking of israel the prime minister benjamin netanyahu has commented on the outcome of the book today let's
9:04 pm
take a listen to what he just had to say. israel completely rejects this proposed to us was allusion drew swim is our capital always was always will be. but i do appreciate the fact that a growing number of countries refused to participate in this theater of the absurd so i appreciate that and especially i want to again express our thanks to president trump in a better only for their store defense of israel and there's cold war defense of the truth all right so he rejects the vote what next then for israel. what he missed next you know it doesn't sound to borat about it i mean that resolution of possible is expected and he made it keels in this video that he quoted and he had to have the absurd pointing out again that more countries also abstain i think if that is what is video fishnets looking at at the moment from
9:05 pm
a point a few in israel you know the official line was here in the past couple of days that you know it doesn't really matter it is a non-binding resolution and some israeli officials also included like publicity stunt by the palestinians now if you don't at it from an international point of view might say israel and the u.s. have isolated to themselves. but that there might not be any implications that photo of that on the ground. in cars to netanyahu that he mentioned those countries that abstained did the u.s. and its threats prior to the vote do you think that those threats you know had some influence on some countries. it probably did. as some countries probably didn't want to offend the united states mainly because they might depend on u.s. support in other fields or because they felt particularly close like canada and
9:06 pm
mexico u.s. neighbors who also abstained some other countries didn't even show up for the vote and didn't want to make a stand there but we really want this number might be bigger than it used to be on other occasions but once again the fact is that very few countries went with the united states and this included countries that included voted for this resolution include its european allies like germany france britain so the bottom line is this is a very embarrassing defeat for the americans and this america first foreign policy means in this case america almost alone it's a very good point in time you want about the palestinians we heard one who the boss saying that this was a victory for his people how much support do the palestinians now count much support can they pull out of this vote today. but it's an
9:07 pm
important question said a lot of palestinians us themselves right now because i mean officials here saying they would say they want to keep this momentum we also understand that they want to keep not being in international organizations and bringing this point that the problem is i mean everybody knows this is a symbolic resolution and it's just reaffirming a known standing and position on to sudan so in that sense it's important but when you talk to. their expectations very little they're very skeptical because they also know there have been u.n. resolutions before that not have don't have they didn't they were not implemented and they actually don't know what this is meeting them right now you know on the ground so did don't really expect that much and they see is about as being above international law so they don't see any changes here on the ground our correspondent tonya kramer in jerusalem and carson phenomena reporting tonight from
9:08 pm
washington to both of you thank you. we move now to europe the polls have closed in catalonia after an election seen as a gauge of support for independence from spain while the votes are still being counted official data has revealed that the turnout was exceptionally high the election comes two months after the region declared independence following a referendum which was opposed by madrid spanish authorities have called today's snap election in the hope that the result will put an end to the political crisis. but will that let's go now to barcelona where correspondent. lisa lewis are following the latest developments for us good evening to you both lisa let me start with you you are at a celebration for independence supporters how was the mood there.
9:09 pm
while for the moment it's not a celebration just yet people here are waiting for the results to come in there is about one percent of the results that have always already been counted but that's not really significant. people have significant people have actually told me that they are hoping that their camp will win back some our also very aware of the fact that even if they won these elections it would be very very complicated to become actually independent after all that happened here in spain and at least let me ask you what about what about their leader mr crow this push tomorrow i mean he didn't cast his vote personally did they mean he's still in this self-imposed exile in belgium so how much influence didn't doesn't really have an absent see. while he is not here is that right and if he came back he would probably have to go to prison now some of the people here are really well that and some others are
9:10 pm
saying well if we win these elections with a high margin that would mean that there would be so much popular pressure on the central government that he could come back and become our only really. barbara if we could let's take a look now at the anti independence camp you are they are with the sweden on those supporters what do they expect from this vote. yeah we're at the inner city barcelona hotel where the sudan is have made their election h.q. and same. picture here everybody waiting waiting waiting because the hand counted votes are coming soon very very slowly just it's just a drip and nothing to say yet of course the liberal party this year did honest and whose leader i mean does was the was the shooting star of this election really sort
9:11 pm
of carrying her party up and really going strongly against the independent the status on the other side she really hopes to become the strongest party in parliament and so she tries to form the government she wants to form a government then in the way that she collects all the antis secessionist forces on her side but we know it's a neck and neck election and nothing to really party is out yet and before we let you go you know our viewers know you reports a lot on the european union a lot from brussels what is at stake tonight for the european union in this election in catalonia. the european union of course once a peaceful resolution of this it once that there is a political solution that top people find back together that they learn to talk to each other again stop hating each other and sort of begin
9:12 pm
a political pro says here because he is well known cattle on writer said in an interview with a newspaper this is a cop's alone has become like go of the island in the intensity of hatred and emotion here off the two camps against each other only without the violence and so of course the e.u. ones for these two go wait it's the one conflict it really doesn't need there's so many other things to concentrate on you have to certainly be curious let me ask both of you barbara and lisa what are you hearing there when can we expect the first results of this election to come in place so what are you hearing. we understand that i was the first results are actually coming in right now that is that the the. the definite results might actually end to be known by wednesday next week so they are counting the results bit by bit and publishing them all so that
9:13 pm
they would be just a bit of the bizarre situation is that you've got this t.v. screen in the background here in that room behind me and he was just watching the results coming in obviously they're not representative at all it's of the time being and at that definite results will be published on wednesday also when older they it's from other countries have come in there about thirty thousand people are they taking from other countries yeah i mean is this a good point to me to the ballots are being counted by hand tonight and that maybe is one reason why as barbara was saying the numbers are coming in at a trickle pace barbara vessel and lisa louis both of you in barcelona on the story for us tonight thank you very much we'll be back with you as the numbers come in you're watching g.w. news why vote from berlin still to come fast tracking your way to the top of germany's highest peak it gets an ultra modern new cable way and its record breaking in more ways. than one.
9:14 pm
goodness the on again off again pilot strike is back on cable can't pilots and companies just get along been which. it would make life easier if you're us that's for sure ryanair pilots in germany go walking off the job friday for four hours the union accuses the line of a pub listening stunt it promises to break it nice unions for the first time in company history to avert the strike but it yesterday's talks ryan is suddenly pulled out of negotiations because it is like two of the union officials taking part. ryanair ahead michael o'leary will bend over backwards to make a buck and that mentality has helped to make ryan air a force to be reckoned with and the european market. further refining the ultra low cost model pioneered by u.s. carriers sell to west o'leary cut ticket prices in favor of making money and baggage fees on board shopping and other secondary revenue streams. but that cost
9:15 pm
cutting obsession ran him a fall of many unions they objected to what they described as substandard pay poor working conditions and uncertain labor contracts. the result many pilots left ryanair and the airline recently announced it would be forced to cancel some twenty thousand flights through march of next year. to stave off a threatened strike in some european territories over the holidays ryanair management recently announced he would finally enter into talks with the unions but if we've got to make a change will make a change and in this case because it was christmas week with within our control we're where we have to call up this action so people can take. a good home for christmas but it seems that not everyone was convinced my cool leary had really changed his tune germany's pilot union cockpit says they're calling for a four hour morning strike on ryanair flights in germany this friday or if they
9:16 pm
carry through with the threat it would be the first strike in ryanair history. and we've got the union spokesman here on. thanks for joining us so where did all go wrong can you give us some sort of explanation as to what happened to your campaign for union recognition at ryanair which you had just managed to clinch i thought. yeah that's what we thought as well but when we traveled to dublin yesterday and met the rhino officials we found out that the first thing they wanted to do is to decide in to dictate even with whom they want to and negotiate and with whom not they said two of our five big ocean team negotiation team members were not of their liking so they said well those those two guys have to leave or the other one could stay and that's not how. they didn't like the look at them oh well basically. they said they are in
9:17 pm
a legal dispute with ryan air this is because they got fired one of them just because they he announced that he's part of the negotiation team ryanair fired him and then you they got into a legal conflict and they said we don't talk to people we do it we are an illegal conflict with ok must be a frustrating situation. yeah definitely it is because. this is us and for the right in a pilot actually is pretty bad hundreds of them leave ryan and they say well. they they hope for a better contracts in the future and they hope for for such basic things like a good holiday regulation like a good payment and it even those basic things ryan s.s. well we don't put them into a contract so we just are not interested in discussing with them but you'll pilots really treated like janice's is some of them charge say that again
9:18 pm
they really treated like cleaning personnel as as some of the pilots actually accuse the airline. most of them actually are they even if they want to drink a bottle of water during the twelve day twelve hour day a working day they have to pay for this water and if they did that to stand up and say hey this can't be this can be the right way they get fired right away and this is definitely not the way that employers should treat his employee just briefly tell me about the treatment of passengers you guys a coaling a strike at a very inconvenient time christmas yet it's that's perfectly true however we on purpose decided to limit the strike to four hours in the morning there were probably sixteen flights affected this is just to keep the consequences for the passengers as small as possible however of course if there is
9:19 pm
a pilot strike there will be planes not flying in the us automatically affecting passengers we would get that but there's no other choice again i'm just glad i'm taking a train and not a plane marcus thanks for coming on the show. is donald trump's tax bill really a christmas gift to the american people and how the u.s. president puts it economists say most of its benefits go to corporations and the wealthy and trump probably won't sign it into lower until next month that it delayed potentially painful spending cuts until after the midterm elections. the business world is celebrating the massive tax cuts and many companies are passing along some of the savings to their employees throwing says it will provide an additional three hundred million dollars for job training facility upgrades and charitable giving wells fargo is boosting its minimum wage to fifteen dollars an hour and donating four hundred million dollars to nonprofit and community
9:20 pm
organizations during his victory lap donald trump cited eighteen t. as an example of the upbeat mood the company promised a one thousand dollars bonus to two hundred thousand employees once the tax bill is signed into law republicans argue that cutting the corporate tax rate well entice companies to step up investment and that will create new jobs but analysts say that hasn't been the case with previous tax cuts. in the united states has tried to do this cut taxes corporations and high income individuals and expect growth has not happened yet and so this is another experiment and see if this works this time but history is not a good guide for. if the tax reform fails to bolster growth as promised the country's deficit could spiral and increase pressure on washington to cut social programs the strong economy and near for employment have led many analysts to

question the need for the one point five trillion dollars tax overhaul. thanks frank ben thank you very much here's some of the other stories that are making headlines around the world a fire in south korea has led twenty nine people dead and more than a dozen injured the blazing govt an eight story building in the city of j. chong officials say all the victims were found inside a sauna on the second floor the fire is thought to have started in a parking lot below. cuban president raul castro will step down in april two thousand and eighteen once his successor is chosen on thursday cuba's parliament extended its legislative period until april effectively delaying the historic transition by two months castro in his late older brother fidel have ruled the country for nearly sixty years. the former german chancellor gerhard schroeder's says his social democrats should quickly agreed to terms with the

chancellor angela merkel's conservatives and form a new government he made his comments in an exclusive interview with g w news schroeder who was recently elected chairman of the russian state controlled giant ross neff also defended the controversial german russian pipeline project known as nord stream to. i believe that any future government will see this project as a good business and will support it just as the current chancellor and the current foreign minister do i have no worries on that score. so don't you see the danger that because of this power vacuum in berlin germany interests in brussels are of course that could be the case that's why i'm one of those who say let's get a move on let's act as soon as possible. what's your advice to your party a new coalition or loose corporation kind of dramatics and get on with
9:23 pm
a grand coalition what else do you think that in future governments in germany will always take so long to far. it's difficult this is the first time that we've got a six party parliament two of those parties are not seen as potential coalition partners in fact they aren't capable of being in a coalition the left on the one hand and the f.t. on the other that's why it will become more difficult so i'm telling my party very frankly there's no way round it you have to take on this responsibility but you have to convince the party members that this is necessary and do it quickly. europe needs it europe needs a stable france which they've got in the form of macro and europe needs a stable germany with this in mind i believe the sensible thing to do is to form a government quickly and as things stand the only option is a grand coalition that's what we should do and no one profits from new elections
9:24 pm
and no one profits from playing around with other ideas like case by case corporation or whatever that won't get us anywhere but. we thought we're going to court of good to. which cost the new government take on russia what do you advise there for. the corporation rather than confrontation that's the sensible way to go it. we need the equivalent of a new policy of detente it's about time it's high time i'm in favor of the step by step the removal of sanctions is dependent on how things go and donbass we should not always be talking about an escalation when there are prisoner exchanges when the heavy weapons are withdrawn verified and supervised by the appropriate people then we should go ahead and say ok we see there's goodwill and we want to reward this by dismantling sanctions step by step. and by the way as the
