that's what we've been involved with. this is g.w. news live from berlin tonight a defining in. more than one hundred countries voted in favor of a u.n. resolution calling for the u.s. to reverse its recognition of jerusalem as israel's capital and that despite trump's threats to cut off funding to countries that oppose it will get reactions

from our correspondents in washington in jerusalem also coming up counting the votes in catalonia as crucial election and initial exit polls are predicting another absolute majority for the region's pro independence parties what would that mean for madrid's hopes of putting to rest months a political crisis. it's good to have you with us and we start tonight in new york where the u.n. general assembly has overwhelmingly passed a resolution asking the united states to withdraw its decision to recognize jerusalem as the capital of israel at an emergency session today one hundred twenty eight of the one hundred ninety three member states voted in favor of the most.
10:02 pm
only eight countries voting with the u.s. that's despite a threat by u.s. president donald trump to cut u.s. aid to countries that backed the measure palestinian president mahmoud abbas held the decision as a victory for his people and for more on that now we are joined by our correspondent in washington carson phenomenon and our correspondent in israel tanya kramer to both of you good evening karsten let me start with you the u.s. has been defeated or at least embarrassed in this vote what now i mean is washington licking its wounds. from ministration is doubling down on his decision concerning jerusalem as had to be expected there have been no tweets or other statements from the president himself so far but vice president mike pence just tweeted on the president trumped the u.s. expects our allies to stand with us thank you to the countries that recognize our

right to determine where we put our embassy and with that he echoed some points that nikki haley the u.s. ambassador to the u.n. made earlier today in which she said this was a question of whether countries respect disrespect the united states but i quite don't get that we need to be honest because of course the us has the rights to decide where its embassy to israel is located but also other countries have the right to disagree and to criticize this move and if you actually look at the countries that went with the united states here this list is knows very impressive we have got somalia on during. the muscle islands and of cause is where this is not a very impressive coalition of the willing. and speaking of israel the prime minister benjamin netanyahu has commented on the outcome of the book today let's
10:04 pm
take a listen to what he just had to say. israel completely rejects this proposed to us was allusion drew swim is our capital always was always will be. but i do appreciate the fact that a growing number of countries refuse to participate in this theater of the absurd so i appreciate that and especially i want to again express our thanks to president trump an ambassador for their store defense of israel and their stole were difference of the truth. all right so he rejects the vote what next then for israel. what he did mr netanyahu doesn't sound to borat about it i mean that possible is expected and he made it keels in this video that he quoted and he had to have the episode pointing out again that more countries also abstain i think if that is what is video fishnets looking at at the moment from a point
10:05 pm
a few in israel you know the official line was here in the past couple of days that you know it doesn't really matter it is a non-binding resolution and some israeli officials also called it like publicity stunt by the palestinians now if you don't get it from an international one if you might say israel and the u.s. have isolated to themselves. but that there might not be any implications that photo on that on the ground. in cars to netanyahu that he mentioned those countries that abstained did the u.s. and its threats prior to the vote do you think that those threats you know had some influence on some countries. it probably did in the. some countries probably didn't want to offend the united states mainly because they might depend on the us supports in other fields or because they felt particularly close like canada and mexico u.s.
10:06 pm
neighbors who also abstained some other countries didn't even show up for the votes and didn't want to make a stand there but we really what's this number might be bigger than it used to be on other occasions but once again the fact is that very few countries went with the united states and this included countries that included voted for this resolution include its european allies like germany france britain so the bottom line is this is a very embarrassing defeat for the americans and this america first foreign policy means in this case america almost alone it's a very good point in time you want about the palestinians we heard backcourt abbas saying that this was a victory for his people but how much support do the palestinians now. support can they pull out of this vote today. but it's an important question
10:07 pm
instead a lot of palestinians us themselves right now because i mean officials here saying they would say they want to keep this momentum we also understand that they want to keep not being in national organizations and bringing this plan and the problem is i mean everybody knows this is a symbolic resolution and it's just we've turned in and now i'm standing and position on to sudan so in that sense it's important but when you took two hundred fifteen mins here their expectations are actually very low or they're very skeptical because they also know there have been u.n. resolutions before that not have done had they didn't and were not implemented and they actually don't know what this is meeting the right now you know on the ground so don't don't really expect that much and they see is meant as being above international law so they don't see any changes here on the ground. our correspondents on you cramer in jerusalem and carson phenomena reporting tonight

from washington to both of you you thank. well here in europe the polls have closed in catalonia after an election seen as a gauge of support for independence from spain while the votes are still being counted official data has revealed that the turnout was exceptionally high the election comes two months after the region declared independence following a referendum which was opposed by madrid spanish authorities have called today's snap election in the hope that the result will put an end to the political crisis but it's not looking like that's what's going to happen i want to go live now to barcelona were correspondents barbara visa and lisa lewis are both following the latest developments for us lisa let's go to you first your out of celebration for independence supporters how's the mood there they must be feeling like. emboldened by the numbers that are coming in. well they are not feeling
10:09 pm
embedded in the can just hear the music stops it behind me and some people are cheering and some people are clapping have been clapping over the evening but that really depends on the game and the results that coming in bit by bit and sometimes the independents can ease ahead and sometimes the others that head and whenever this campaign is ahead they clapping starts the cheering. jubilate things that's many people here are busy hoping that they will win and that they will then be even the become an independent nation. you know thirty percent of the votes we understand have been counted the number the official number we've got right now i want to ask you about carlos the man who who was once the cattle on president he is now in self-imposed exile in belgium what kind of influence does he have with his supporters at all today. well he is still the
10:10 pm
leader but it depends on who to talk you talk to actually some people will tell you we expect him to come back take the lead become our president again because there will be so much pressure and then others will say actually no we know that if he comes back he will go to jail and we will not be able to be hourly does it really depends on who you talk to here tonight. and barbara let me take this to you know what i'm seeing coming across the wires at this moment is catalonia is secession is parties would win seventy seats in the one hundred thirty five seat regional parliament and that's with fifty two percent of the votes counted so what does that mean then for where where you are the independent scale. you have the unionist camp certainly doesn't see is not in the mood for partying
10:11 pm
and doesn't really see its road to victory we don't know because the bigger cities particularly barcelona the urban centers might be slower in coming in and that's where they really hope to make a strong showing. they had really hoped the sudan is the new liberal party that sort of really shot up in the polls before this election was its new leader. who made a very strong showing against the secessionist and really took them on and showed a lot of courage in doing that they had hoped for more they might come out to be the strongest party yet however it doesn't look like as if they could find coalition partners in the council on problem and and it will of all have been for nothing they will have shown that they have a strong sort of middle of the road audience that they have enough people supporting the the traditional more wealthy come. salons who don't want
10:12 pm
independence who want to guard in economic success here in the region but if they don't have partners they can form a government and that will go to the other side to this is session is going to stay with you just a moment our viewers right now we're showing the pictures of what people in catalonia are seeing if we can go back to those pictures there the counting of the ballots that's taking place as well we just want to let our viewers know that the ballots are counted by hand in this election that is one reason why it's taking as long as it is to get to the official tallies in these pictures right here is what everyone's watching tonight and barbara you do a lot of reporting from brussels from the european union what is at stake in this election for the e.u. . the e.u. of course once this conflict to go away it once it peaceful and then once
10:13 pm
a political solution to this it once at madrid and barcelona back on talking terms and to sort of figure something out a way out of this constant crisis that has been ongoing now for a couple of years even if the e.u. really does not need that crisis. this is really this political conflict that it's entirely homemade in catalonia and so everybody of course still hopes but at the moment it doesn't really look as if this would pass and the stalemate cuts alone you might just carry on. our other correspondents barber of easel and lisa lewis in barcelona tonight to both of you thank you. well if you've ever been to germany's tallest peak. you may have had a long wait to get to the top but that is a thing of the past the now brand new cable car system capable of transporting more

than five hundred people an hour to the summit and its record breaking in other ways as well. the weather and kitchen wasn't playing ball but just as the gauntlet was being christened the sun decided to show itself the opening meant the end for this gigantic construction project one of the world's biggest the cables to the top are roughly four and a half kilometers long there is only one support pillar along the way it's been described as an engineering marvel. and it's a very unique project and many were gods but particularly the final stages if you'd been here two or three weeks ago you probably wouldn't have believed that we would finish it in time we're really happy we made it. to fit the crews worked in all weather conditions at the top of germany's highest peak to get the job done but despite the sometimes tough conditions the fifty million euro cable custom was
