pro russian rebels in the east of the country a prisoner exchange between the two sides is under way this ukraine central. the government is releasing three hundred and six prisoners and expects the separatists to release seventy four of its captives in return this off the talks in moscow mediated by the head of the russian orthodox church. and we're going to get the latest on this story now from correspondent david stern in kiev david why is this prisoner exchange happening now is this a sign in any way that progress is being made in the search for peace well yes this is definitely a sign that some progress is being made without a doubt with a prisoner exchange of this size as you said seventy four ukrainians will be returning home while three over three hundred separatists will be going back to the

breakaway territories this is the largest exchange so far in the conflict so obviously this is a major step but on the other hand it needs to be said that the fighting continues and continues it continues in a very very high level not as high as it was a week ago but in the last twenty four hours we've seen one ukrainian soldier killed. and five wounded so obviously the fighting continues so much so that emmanuel mccall and angle americal issued a statement over the weekend calling for an immediate cease fire that still has not taken hold we're hoping that we will see a cease fire for the holiday season so obviously we have two separate things going on we have the fighting and the prisoner exchange it remains to be seen which one will actually be the indication of how things move forward and david does some prisoner exchange still i believe the last prisoner exchange was about fourteen months ago how exactly did this one come about the deal that made it possible.

it's difficult to say we're really not privy to the discussions but it needs to be said that these discussions have been continuing pretty much under uninterrupted we have the discussions that go on in minsk each time there is talk about a possible prisoners exchange there is hope or there has been hope there would be an all for all prisoner exchange but that is still not that's still not has happened both sides still have prisoners in their position in their possession so we really don't know how this came about it's been a topic for quite some time and we'll see whether there will be any other ones any other exchanges happening in the near in the near future and do we know anything about the prisoners that are being exchanged today no we don't exactly we will everything will become much clearer with it when the exchange or when the exchange starts i should say in about an hour's time at least that's what scheduled they will be taken from there to the nearby cities one of the kids in the
