reopening a key line of communication to the south the move suggests a thaw in relations between the two rivals with new calls for dialogue on both sides. and u.s. president trump hitting twitter with a flurry of warnings to america's adversaries we look ahead at what could be a turbulent year for the white house at home and abroad plus. the drug crisis that's wreaking havoc in communities across the united states we need some of the young people paying a heavy price for their parents' addiction. i'm brian thomas a very warm welcome we start this show in iran where authorities are trying to turn the tide against anti-government protests now sweeping the country. now this is
9:02 am
footage aired by iran's state media of pro-government demonstrations which they say condemned the unrest at least twenty one people have now been killed hundreds have been arrested the country's supreme leader is blaming foreign meddling security forces are struggling to contain the boldest challenge to iran's clerical leadership in nearly a decade well the u.s. ambassador to the united nations nikki haley has called for an emergency session of the security council on the situation after six days of demonstrations protesters are showing no signs of backing down. video footage reaching dortch of ela through social media shows the extent of the unrest spreading across iran. the violence which has rocked the country for nearly a week appears if anything to be escalating. against the islamic republic of iran those with cash and politics weapons and intelligence operators you can join hands

to create trouble that opposition leaders say the demonstrators are demanding far reaching reforms. his changes even radical changes they want to change pretty much everything all in short. they want to live differently. yes it's true that improving the economic situation is very important for them. but it's not only about that citizen economy it is impossible it's an opinion. as the protests widen iran's president has son rouhani has expressed sympathy for peaceful demonstrators worried about making ends meet that's unlikely to satisfy their demands. north korea says it will reopen a suspended communications line with south korea in what could be a sign of thawing tensions north korean leader kim jong un ordered the reconnecting
9:04 am
of the hotline at the country's border the two koreas have been making overtures to improving ties since new years that's when kim has signaled that he wants to see north korean athletes crossing the border to join next month's winter olympics in the south. let's get the very latest on this with josh method correspondent covering the story for us from seoul josh what's behind this announcement to reconnect this key line of communications. well this move was somewhat expected and hoped for development in the wake of kim's speech on new year's day. signaled his willingness to. not only potentially send north korean athletes to do upcoming winter olympics but also called for reduce tensions on the korean peninsula. specifically with south korea so this is something that south korean officials had been hoping for and looking forward to
9:05 am
they haven't yet told us what that conversation has been but we do know that it took place ok now should further discussions take place between the two sides do new do we know what the focus of those talks could be. well each side seems to have slightly differing views on what those talks should include. in his speech kim generally had a fairly fine line he wanted to talk about the olympics and generally reducing tensions on the korean peninsula but he also asked that the world except north korea nuclear state now south korean officials along with the united states have said those issues cannot be disconnected from each other and that any talks that don't address the broader issue of north korea's nuclear program are not useful ok
9:06 am
now should to south to join the north or north in talks would america be at the table as a kind of silent partner. that also remains unclear there's been some mixed messages out of washington about their attitudes towards talking to north korea as some officials in the state department have signaled out willingness and there have been some reports of back channel overtures in past months however president donald trump has remained rather publicly skeptical of the usefulness of talking to north korea so that obviously remains a huge issue for the effectiveness of any kind of talks ok briefly if you could josh are we looking at the escalation. again it's not clear you know whether this will hit some of those more substantive issues but i think even
9:07 am
many of the most skeptical observers see this these overtures and this talking is better than nothing just for us from seoul thanks very much thank you now for a look at some of the other stories making the news today rescue crews have been working to recover the bodies of forty eight people killed when a bus careened off a cliff and peru officials say six survivors have been found but other passengers are still missing the vehicle collided with a truck before plunging off that highway north of the capital lima. the roman catholic church in congo has condemned a crackdown on protests against president joseph kabila as quote barbarism security forces killed at least seven people and used tear gas during demonstrations on sunday in the capital kinshasa catholic activists have been organizing ongoing protests over could be refusal to leave office. a canadian man who was held

hostage by taliban militants for five years has been arrested in ottawa joshua boyle is facing fifteen charges including assault and making death threats the alleged offenses took place between last october and december just after the thirty four year old his wife and three children were rescued. this is deja vu news live from berlin still to come on the show president donald trump has put a turbulent first year in office behind him what will twenty eighteen bring we'll take a look at what's in store for the american president. of germany's labor market has been showing some stunning performance kristoff what's it looking like the actually very good brian as is say the employment in germany as reached his story height some people have been calling it a job wonder and indeed the development is remarkable in twenty seventeen employment germany has seen its sharpest rise in a decade pushing the number of people holding
9:09 am
a job to an all time high of forty four point three million that's according to the germans to six off economists at the four institute say the strong economy will continue to create jobs in the coming years they're forecasting the number of employed people to grow to forty four point eight million this year into more than forty five million in twenty nine t. now the service sector enjoyed the strongest job growth last year but the manufacturing construction and agriculture sectors all added substantially to their workforce as well for some more analysis let's bring in our financial correspondent on that device in frankfurt and receive these record employment numbers at the same time companies are complaining that the country doesn't have enough skilled workers how does that go together. well actually it's an easy equation you might have enough people who want to work but they might not have the right skills which are
9:10 am
needed for the industry germany is highly industrialized and also more and more it goes into automation so it's a mixture of i t related jobs and those jobs really need a lot of skilled workers a recent survey by the i.w. institute one of the most we know and economic research houses in germany from colo and is saying that the shortage of skilled labor is the main thing holding back companies also in two thousand and eighteen the phones to though is expecting the economy to grow by a whopping two point six percent which is about below potential a buff potential i should say another thank you for the moment we'll come back to you in just a second comprehensive new rules for europe's financial sector are coming into force today a revised markets in financial instruments arrests of or misfits to will change the
9:11 am
way investment research is paid for transform the way trades are implemented and impact the way brokers exchange information the aim of regulators in brussels is to boost transparency in europe's financial sector and level the playing field for smaller investors and with that back to our financial correspondent anesthetized both in frankfurt and that's a what does this revised regulation mean for the financial industry. well it's more or less a revolution for the financial industry it's meant to actually open up and be more transparent for all the financial markets and that is a boy's trick at by the financial crisis for now you have to know that a lot of securities more than fifty percent of securities are not sold via the official market the stock exchanges but why are so-called black pools which allows investors to sell huge blocks of shares without previously saying how much they
9:12 am
want to have for it or also a lot of securities are sold why a so-called broker to broker deals or over the counter all that market or all of that transactions are not regulated and that has to change now so essentially as your wrists saying this misfit to as the financial word is calling it is said to rewrite the rules how information essentially shared and how prices are set and also help rochas pay one and i bet but for now we have a lot of ava's all across the word the u.k. is allowing a certain i think the stock exchange to implement it later and also the german regulator just came out with a waiver for your ex to implement the new rules a lot later than previously expected and advise been friends for thank you an arsenal and the new year has brought in a new law as well make an eagle to pay men more than women for the same work and
9:13 am
it's the first country in the world to make both public and private enterprises accountable to the rules. until now women in iceland have earned an average nineteen percent less than their male colleagues but those days are over equal pay for equal work has just become a must there irrespective of gender ethnicity sexuality or nationality the new law will cover over one hundred fifty thousand workers. so far women have borne the cost of the gender pay gap and if that cost is too high and to reach our goal we're all going to have to work hard now we have the perfect chance to do so. the new law affects one thousand two hundred companies in iceland which employ at least twenty five workers who now have to publish their wage scales there are courses to help them implement the new rules on completion companies get a certificate which has to be renewed every three years. this will affect
9:14 am
employers first and foremost they're offering the jobs and now it's up to them to shoulder their responsibilities. and be part of this mission with us pack up the that so that. it's hope to close the country's gender pay gap by twenty twenty two and the other countries have made similar moves for now iceland is the global pioneer. and specter brian and donald trump has been added on twitter again very busy first off the u.s. president has started the new year with a flurry of tweets directed at america's adversaries and partners he says need to tow the line where north korea's leader he had this i too have a nuclear button and it is a much bigger and more powerful one than his and my button works trouble so threaten to cut aid to the palestinian authority saying after paying hundreds of millions of dollars the us wasn't getting respect yet it with the palestinians no longer willing to talk peace why should we make any of these massive future payments to them and the us president also addressing the protests around the
9:15 am
people of iran are finally acting against the brutal and corrupt reigning regime all of the money the president obama so foolishly gave them went into terrorism and into their pockets well iran north korea the middle east peace process these are among the many challenges the president will have on his plate and twenty team and at home investigations into the alleged links between russia and trump's election campaign remain open our washington correspondent carson phenomenon sent us this report on what lies ahead in the u.s. politics this year. there is little donald who will dominate the headlines in the united states this year once again donald trump like him or not the president has up and it's washington's way of doing business we broke every record it's the largest i always say the most massive but it's the
9:16 am
largest tax cut in the history of our country tax reform might be trump's only big legislative achievement so far but the president has used his many powers to change the us for years to come the environment's consumer rights immigration foreign relations trade and the judiciary have all been affected donald trump has even changed the way journalism works these days this is arguably the most important tool a journalist covering the white house has a smartphone to follow the president's twitter feed and to find out what is on donald trump's mind today or the next hour or the next minutes until the next tweet anyway on average the president tweets seven times a day in addition to speeches and other statements trump rants against what he calls fake news parents conspiracy theories and so its opponents celebrities and even members of its own party and praises himself for his real or imagined
9:17 am
achievements like ending the alleged war on christmas i told you that we would be saying merry christmas again my and donald trump certainly isn't done yet his next big project is infrastructure the united states might be the world's only remaining global superpower at least for now but back home much of its infrastructure is crumbling like this hybrid just outside washington. i the president hopes that his new initiative will for a change be popular across party lines but there are still many open questions like what kind of infrastructure projects you'll bridges and airports or will equip schools and hospitals and who's going to pay for that donald trump's tax reform already blows a big coal into the federal budget and then infrastructure package for a come on top of that now some republicans want to cut welfare programs to plug
9:18 am
that hole but that's a no go for the democratic party especially in an election year and in fact the democrats stand a good chance to win a majority in both chambers of congress in autumn after all trumps approval ratings are at a record low for any u.s. president in modern history of to a year in office they hover at around thirty five percent so his biggest hope for a boost in popularity is continued economic growth or perhaps the outbreak of a major international crisis. nothing makes americans rally behind their president like the threat of war and in particular when it comes to north korea and its nuclear program trump hasn't been holding back they will be met with fire fury and frankly power the likes of which this world has never see before and there are quite a few people here in washington who fear that trump might follow through on his threats this year the rhetoric of trump and some of his supporters on north korea

shows parallels to the bush administration just before the invasion of iraq and so it raises some eyebrows when the commandant of the u.s. marine corps recently told his troops a war is coming and they should be prepared for a big fight. another challenge for the u.s. in twenty eighteen it's opioid crisis every day dozens of americans die from drug overdoses the children of drug addicts are often the other often unseen victims in this crisis some are removed from their parents for their own safety and cared for by foster parents our next report focuses on one girl who has endured great hardships as the daughter of recovering drug addicts it's a moment fifteen year old athena gregory can enjoy any when she can focus just on herself behind her lies a horrific childhood as the daughter of drug addicts she bore saw responsibility

9:22 am
rare in the u.s. . instead the government relies on foster families to take in children at risk and geo seek out suitable foster families for increasing numbers of children. in this region alone there are almost three times as many foster kids is there were three years ago when a child is taken in here he or she needs comfort clothing and a new home the safe children coalition also has presence on hand just in case a child is removed on his or her birthday. if no relatives are willing or able to help brenda slater and her team have four hours to find a new family in accordance with regulations our entire circuit has been removing an average of eighty five children a month so we had a day last week where we had ten children removed in one night within two hours so when situations like that happen you know we're calling foster parents but there

are not enough foster families to take on this important responsibility. as a foster mother she took an eight in when he was nine months old and made sure that his contact with his birth mother never broke off kate explains how it is when drug addicted parents suddenly take a super view of their own lives to keep that momentum going to day in and day out when you're sober for maybe the first time in your life and you're confronting all sorts of. what i hear about whether overcoming but when they are when you think about what they have to go through day to day if they can see that maybe every day and it's like this is what i'm working for this is what i'm doing that's. a court gave to this mother one year to get her life in order after she had overdosed on heroin since they had a. background of drug use and my other two children are in my custody because of my

drug use they you know they gave me a case plan right away and at that moment i was like ok now i'm done that's it so i wasn't going to lose you know another child into the system because i wanted to go and use drugs. katherine has made it after eight months she got her child back but she fears her past might destroy her children's future. you know i'm very scared because it's more likely for an addicts children to become addicts and i know that i've struggled with it for a while and that would actually kill me to watch my child with it. in my. maryland the gregory family are picking up their youngest from the school bus stop for years the big sister athena was the only reliable parent substitute for anthony who suffers from autism and epilepsy his mother even used drugs while she was pregnant with him now she's playing with a guilty conscience. and i'll never know if my actions had anything to do with how
