presidency when he was fired he not only lost his job he lost his mind all the president disavowed bannan after it emerged he had attacked doll jr for a twenty sixteen meeting with a group of russians in the book banning is quoted as saying even if you thought that this was not treasonous or unpatriotic or bad blank and i happen to think it's all of that you should have called the f.b.i. immediately while it trumps lawyer has sent a cs and desist letter to bannon accusing him of violating a nondisclosure agreements with by speaking to wolf so a spectacular falling out between two former allies or in just a moment but first a look at how the baton trump growing rift came about with friends like these who needs enemies it may feel like ages ago but it hasn't been that long since president donald trump and his former chief strategist steve benen were thick

as thieves. toward the end of the two thousand and sixteen presidential campaign ben and left his post as executive chairman of the right wing web site breitbart news to join the trump campaign he was the embodiment of all the issues that energize the trump base nationalism and time aggression and economic deregulation despite accusations of racism and xenophobia benon helped build the wave of populism that trumpet unleashed trump became president and bannon became a kingmaker. bannon took on the role as chief strategist and senior counselor to the president he was seen as a primary architect of trump's nationalist agenda the president was not shy about celebrating their closeness is very committed he's a friend about it he's very committed to getting things but we'll have a very good relationship as you know with steve been steve's been a friend of mine for a long time i like steve a lot man and also helped push both the president's populism and his attacks on news organizations there corporatist globalist media that are adamantly opposed
4:04 pm
adamantly opposed. to economic nationalist agenda like donald trump. but after a series of staff shake ups and public embarrassments trump for an instant in the white house to an end after a mere seven months. is now following the publication of an incendiary book bannan trump have suddenly become sworn enemies trading barbs over the media. given how fervently readers of breitbart have supported trump the cracks in this relationship could spell trouble. and washington correspondent carson phenomena is covering this a very public falling out carsten know a lot of lost here is this a permanent west. well you never know with donald trump he is known to have fallen out with people and overcoming that rift but my assessment is
4:05 pm
that it will take a lot to overcome this clearly donald trump values loyalty a lot he's not necessarily loyal to the people who work for him but he demands absolute loyalty when it comes to his own person and clearly steve benen has violated that in the view of the president ultimately this break up is bad for both people steve benen still has some influence over at least part of donald trump's base through his right wing news platform right by it's the same time though also the stature of steve benen is diminished because all the other right wing news media have been distancing themselves from ben and they have sided with the president's already a number of politicians have rejected indorsements from ben and even the republican donors like rebecca mercer has said they would no longer support ben and so this is
4:06 pm
also bad for him now carson this is i mean appears to be a very sensational book this has all the ingredients of a soap opera with insults flying back and forth a lot of drama but the most glaring accusation is bana's description of a meeting between the chum campaign and a russian lawyer described as treasonous how could that affect the ongoing investigation into the campaigns the ties to russia and the trump presidency do they have to take this into account. well i don't think there's anything in this book that. doesn't already know he's looking into these things many of the things that i described in the book have been known to have been described by other journalists before the damage of this book is definitely that now with ben and a former trump confirms that the russian investigators an is not a hoax as the president says and also that this book describes the dysfunction in
4:07 pm
the white house which is damaging and also it has once again changed the conversation about on the trunk because there are so many people now who have on the record described on the trump as an idiot someone who doesn't read who doesn't know things who is not interested in things this is really diminishing the stature of the president and ultimately the presidency all right and now we have a perfect segue carson because what do we know about the book's author michael wolff is this book solid journalism how did he get access to the very inner circle chumps inner circle. well we don't know obviously how reliable everything in that book is michael wolff as worked for the new york times vanity fair the number of other was known publications but he has been criticized in the past for journalism and for allegedly inventing quotes having said that no one has
4:08 pm
come forward so far objecting to the quotes that we've seen in the except the white house of course and it's also quite well known that michael wolff was indeed a regular guest in the white house almost like a fly on the wall he was there almost every day talking to lots of people that we know from colleagues who have seen him there also from other accounts so he had really unique access to the things going on in the early months of the white house and i guess because of the chaos there no one really threw him out because nobody knew whose authority that was that's at least what one colleague has said so i think he had very good access if every quote is correct we don't know he himself said that sometimes he got conflicting accounts from different people he talked to so sometimes he gave both accounts and sometimes he said well this sounds more reasonable this is what i put into the book so i don't even if half of it is true this is amazing carson phenomena reporting from washington thank you
