wolff bombshell book fire and fury goes on sale in america people are lining up to get their hands on the book the president didn't want them to read trump says it's full of lies and the chief executive of intel is in the hot seat why did he sell millions of dollars worth of intel stock before security flaws in his company's chips became public. plus the german journalist jailed in turkey sends a message to deutsch avella. accuses ancora of holding him hostage just as the turkish foreign minister calls for a new beginning in the rocky relations with germany. i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program thanks for joining us. as chancellor angela
5:02 pm
merkel's conservatives prepare to enter talks on forming a coalition government with the social democrats merkel's own sister party the c.s.u. has welcomed one of europe's staunchest anti immigration leaders to its winter convention gary and leader viktor orbán. he seen here in this video in pink in the pink tie or rather he was in southern bavaria to deliver a key speech to delegates prime minister orbán has a long standing and vocal critic of angela merkel's refugee policy and today he harshly criticized her stance on the european union refugees and immigration. addressing the media outside of the convention orbán portrayed current european migration policy is as suffering from what he called a democratic deficit. of all the europeans have a clear opinion one could say the will of the people is clear they don't want to live in fear of terrorism they want security. they want our borders to be
5:03 pm
secure and they want those who have no justification for living in europe to be taken back to where they come from so they can restart their lives there. and for more let's bring in mckayla cook now our correspondent who is covering the c.s.u. party meeting and mikhail we just saw garion prime minister orbán there again criticizing germany's refugee policy as in harsh terms we have to say what was he invited to the c.s.u. because i mean this is after all merkel sister party. absolutely this is merkel says you sister party that at one point after the migration crisis started actually accused the german chancellor of breaching german law it's kind of withdrew that and has now closed ranks with the german chancellor as we're about to see that fresh start of talks to head towards the new coalition well viktor orban has always
5:04 pm
been critical of merkel and this is you certainly enjoyed that meeting today with someone they see as an old friend he has been here before also pre migration since this issue dominated pretty much the discussions both in germany but also europe wide so yes he is an old friend also significant business interests but of course the timing the pictures of them closing ranks here and the praise that viktor orban had for the c.s.u. leader. when in a speech he declared basically that the very a germany was a christian country and should remain so that also of course sends a very clear signal if not a red line towards berlin before all sides sit down and try and put a government together here in germany and they're going to sit down and about two days time in fact in order to do that so ahead of that i mean is it fair to say
5:05 pm
that the c.s.u. is behind her. it is has a history of having also internal brows it's just. a fight for power here amongst itself and then all of a sudden looks like you turn a switch and everybody closes ranks well that's basically the game to see as you has been playing with angela merkel over the past year is well harsh criticism followed by complete support but of course leaving enough group enough a legacy of those roles to know exactly where the very exited differ from the line of the german chancellor notably is on migration there has been much speculation here in germany about the future of the chancellor how much longer she can cling to power in the country there at the c.s.u. meeting are you seeing any positioning you know any discussion about a post or future for the party. you will not get anybody to
5:06 pm
say and even thinking in that direction but at the same time it was noted here. appears to be the only one who survived this past elections which basically gave the leading parties the c.d.u. to see you see you on the social democrats dressing down at the ballot box this can i mean under the mat for much of one but she certainly was not a victory for her while she survived and i think there was a certain amount of envy but no longer really admiration on how that has worked out for her but yes i mean the public sees it that way that the best years the peak of her chancery is over she might even herself see it that way but the big question is will she be able to get these parties get particular democrats grassroots who will decide in the end on board to continue ground coalition if she doesn't not could well be the end of even me standing once again as
5:07 pm
a candidate but early days here that's what for those talks mckayla cook now with the very latest from the c.s.u. party meeting we thank you so much. a new tell all book that exposes the earliest growing pains of donald trump's presidency is jumping off of the shelves in america and selling out online as well it came out today four days ahead of its scheduled release after trump's attorney tried to stop it the president ripped into author michael wolff after extracts of his book were published portraying a white house in chaos and betrayal trump says that the book is full of lies the author has given an interview here's part of what michael said on n.b.c. news is today program a short while ago i will tell you the one description that everyone gave everyone has some common they all say he is like
5:08 pm
a child. and what they mean by that is he has and a need for immediate gratification it's all about him. they say he's. a moron in. actually there is a competition to sort of get to the bottom line here of who this man is let's remember this man does not read does not listen so he's he's like a. it's like a pinball just just just shooting off the side. more now on author michael wolff and this book that has just come out today i am joined by correspondent carolina chinmoy who is standing by at a washington d.c. bookstore where those books have simply been flying off of the shelves carolyn but first i want to talk a little bit more about what wolf had to say on the today show he paints a damning picture of the president as we heard what is he alternately to be
5:09 pm
believed because his credibility has been criticized not only by the president but also by some of his peers journalists what more are we learning about him as an author and the way that he gather information for this book. when michael well has a very well known her and journalists here in the united states and he contacted our own two hundred interviews in eighteen months to write this book and he said on that interview were just listening to you works every journalist as he has the recordings of the interviews and he has no it's and he also added he's not surprised at all the president is reacting that way because with the lawyers and the letters because this is the way he often reacts he approaches problems in this way and indeed it is pretty extraordinary that a president tries to block the publishing of a book here in the united states. yeah. and carolyn you're there at
5:10 pm
a bookstore we see you know people there behind you were you able to get a copy of fire and fury. no unfortunately not because they're all sold out on that happened yesterday night at this bookstore opened soul night as so let's talk i have here as steve salah sending with me he's the owner of this book shop kramer bookshop thank you for being with us good morning to. pursue thank you thank you this book we're talking we all. talking about was meant to be published on tuesday what happened yesterday well we caught wind of the publishing house they decided to push up the release date and around six o'clock last night we heard about it we were able to get access to some copies and being that we are a bookstore that is open late we decided to release the book on friday at twelve o'clock how many copies we had
5:11 pm
a bunch of copies and we move through them within literally a couple minutes we believe how many cost i can't give you that number but we were very many copies that we had and we move through the very fast many people brace the cold weather to come out and to get the book and indeed it is very called. very fast like come much time they need to go we sold out within a couple minutes after midnight a couple of minutes after midnight and they do you put a book back for yourself. i have a copy of the book for myself i do do you think that media are maybe promoting making too much promotion of this book with this news. yeah i think it's tough to say you know we live in a democracy today people have the right to speakers share information the way they choose to share it i don't really get involved in that stuff but you know clearly it's something is great for the bookstore business i think this is fantastic for our bookstore and you know it's a great way to start the new year with a fantastic splash when are you getting more copies so there's been
5:12 pm
a really bad snowstorm that's taken part of the northeast here and so we're waiting to figure that out we understand they will have more copies as of monday we should actually be getting a lot of copies on monday you're the owner of this bookstore and so probably you know michael wolff and his works what do you think of him as an author i think michael's a very good author and look i think as evidence to what's being put out you know as of now today it's moving pretty pretty aggressively so i think people want to read the book and i think that as evidence to like i said how fast things are moving thank you so much c. for this interview thank you. that was a c. status the. owner of this bookstore they opened yesterday at midnight and in a few minutes all books were sold ok so people who want to get a copy of the book don't go to the library in there and in dupont circle where you are standing by carolina theme i want to thank you very much for your reporting and we do indeed hope that you get a copy fire and fury as we mentioned. all

the latest news on the u.s. economy will not bode well for the president standing by with more on that is beneficial haven't thank you sarah despite his america first policies the u.s. is buying even more foreign goods and services than it's selling the trade gap has reached its highest level in six years the november figure widening to fifty and a half billion dollars. america first is the policy donald trump has preached ever since he entered office he believes more should be done to protect american industries from foreign competition and he's been especially critical of the u.s. trade deficit with china. both the united states and china will have a more prosperous future if we can achieve a level economic playing for you right now unfortunately. it is a very. fair warning not much has changed since the speech in the event
5:14 pm
some economists say that's because u.s. president trump argument is flawed they argue countries like china are not to blame for the trade deficit but rather u.s. consumers americans consume more than they themselves produce the latest u.s. trade stats may be a case in point even with the weaker dollar and on the back of higher exports americans still appear to be spending more on foreign goods. it's closer to daniel coppa financial correspondent in frankfurt daniel another promise of mr trump's not becoming reality how's that going down on the trading floor on this side of the atlantic. well ben i guess is news is really not going to make on trump happy at all he was always promising during his campaign trail that he is going to work on this trade deficit is really seems that his america first policy is not really helping the u.s. economy at all just remember
5:15 pm
a few weeks ago canada still in this discussion of the new nafta trade agreement was canceling a mega deal with boeing in the united states regarding two fighter jets because of this ongoing problems with higher import taxes it's going to be interesting now what he's going to say again to countries like germany and china who have a surplus production remember in the past on a tramp was always saying that he doesn't understand why in america he sees people driving a volkswagen or a b.m.w. but here in europe almost nobody is driving a car from the united states so let's see if those discussions about higher import taxes are going to be again on this i'm going to be again on the table another letdown for mr trump the latest jobs figures have met expect asians. yeah not at all experts were thinking that at least one hundred and ninety thousand new jobs would be created by the end of last year that's not the case just one hundred forty eight thousand jobs were created unemployment rate still remains at
5:16 pm
a level of four point one percent this is meeting the requirements off the fat because of the forecast the fed was agreeing to have higher interest rates by a quarter percent so on the paper band it looks like that almost everybody in the united states is having a job but of course this is not the case just like in germany where many people have part time jobs also just temporary employment on the paper those numbers look pretty good but the reality is of course a little bit different very different in many cases daniel thank you very much. so energy independence is a lovely thing but the trumpet ministration wants to open almost all of the u.s. coastline to offshore drilling while energy companies are cheering several coastal states vow to do whatever it takes to stop it from happening. the five year plan calls for forty seven new offshore leases opening waters that have been off limits for decades including areas off the california and florida coasts is a move that the u.s.
5:17 pm
interior department says is in the nation's interest but it is a clear difference between. you we. and president we're going to have a stronger energy policy and become a stronger are we certainly. to do that the proposal follows last week's announcement of plans to roll back or even repeal safety regulations adopted under the obama administration environmental groups have vowed to oppose the move and are organizing protests offshore drilling is is inherently dirty it's an awful lot of work there will be an oil spill such as was the case off the coast of santa barbara in two thousand and fifteen where are hundred thousand gallons of oil spilled into the ocean killing fish marine mammals and other wildlife. and you can go as far back as two thousand and ten to the b.p. departed horizon spill which spilled millions of barrels into the gulf of mexico
5:18 pm
the plan has already drawn heavy criticism from several coastal states among them the carolinas and california also in florida where memories of the deepwater horizon spill remain fresh the two thousand and ten oil platform explosion claimed the lives of eleven oil workers and devastated the gulf coast. apple says its i phones and macs are affected by the security floor and intel processes billions of devices are vulnerable to hackers intel knew about the falls long ago and the behavior of intel's chief executive officer before the revelation raises serious questions. apple says the bug affects all of its devices that means everything from i phones to apple watches is potentially open to hacking the company says it's unaware of any exploits aimed at the flaw that is specific hacking attacks it plans to release patches for operating systems and its safari browser's the bug is a nightmare for us tech giant intel but also for consumers one common patch known
5:19 pm
as kaiser devours energy and slows the fix device scrutiny is now falling on intel leadership c.e.o. brian presented sold thirty nine million dollars in company stocks and options months after learning about the flaw but well before its disclosure intel says that sale was unrelated to the chip problem the company says it had planned on going public with the bug but had been working on a fix in the meantime. i'll have a full fifteen minutes of news for you next hour sir thank you so much ben i'm going to turn to another story now because after more than a year of deteriorating relations between turkey and germany could we be about to see a breakthrough the turkish foreign minister has called for a new beginning ahead of a bilateral meeting with his german counterpart a major point of contention has been turkey's jailing of german nationals including journalists and these you tell he has been held in turkey for more than ten months without an indictment in a statement sent to d.w.
5:20 pm
news via his lawyer you tell accuses her of holding him quote hostage now your child has also taken issues with the turkish foreign minister's remarks on his case . and to find out more about you charles message and its possible implications for strained german turkish relations we're joined here in the studio by d.w. correspondent yulia hon. what's in this statement well in general it's not exactly easy for dennis the original to communicate with the outside world he is in jail and there are very strict rules so yes we got this message through his lawyer who is among the few people who can regularly meet him and also speak on behalf of him and in this message you jill is actually directly referring to remarks recently made by turkish foreign minister. and i quote him here because i asked about your case he said i am not quote not very happy that there is no indictment yet and you
5:21 pm
joe found a quite sarcastic way of replying to this he said and i'm reading it out that really upset me as i would not want to be unhappy because of me but i can comfort him if i can get used to being held hostage for more than one year he can manage it too so you see there is a lot of irony a lot of sarcasm. and wolf here in his reply and the timing is also interesting because as we mentioned these two foreign ministers that they're scheduled to meet on saturday yes tomorrow and the message of the church has foreign minister ahead of this meeting is actually a quite friendly sounding one we want to get past this crisis is that what he's saying in interviews we want a fresh start and he is asking for mutual understanding and for bilateral talks that based on trust so clearly this is somehow an appeasement offensive to
5:22 pm
woods berlin a better start for two thousand and eighteen because two thousand and seventeen really has been a very terrible year for german turkish relations diplomatic spat over a diplomatic spat insoles verbal attacks. and of course the case of things regional is a really big foreign in those relations that's a really big case a really prominent one that a lot of us know in the media but of but of course there are others as we mentioned and i actually to turn to a couple more of those and then get your reaction there after because you know there are less known cases as we mentioned and it's not just journalists in fact that are the focus but but also lawyers for example let's have a look. the steel door just to be safe police have stormed the offices of this law firm on several occasions and arrested colleagues according to those who work here and there is a second steel door behind the first one. this allows denise used the room at her partners to breathe easier the older him has dual citizenship german as well as
5:23 pm
turkish she spent fifty five days behind bars accused of being a member of a terrorist organization the older him however believes her arrest was due to work as a lawyer and because she is active in the pro kurdish people's democratic party. this globe which i'm put it's just concept. and i think it's part of a greater political concept to minimize and prevent democratic politics here. esky jackie to spend time in jail as well jockey or took part in the legal defense of a university lecturer who was arrested after protesting her dismissal by going on a hunger strike last december two days before the trial was to begin the law offices were raided. they took our computers telephones and external hard drives and they did not return them they also seized documents pertaining to the trial they said they would prevent us from doing our jobs as lawyers. cases still pending
5:24 pm
her trial begins in april she says until then she'll do all she can to help her colleagues behind bars she visited two lawyers in the women's prison. didn't meet us influence there together with eighteen other some of them are their clients so they work on their cases from prison. until and it's a sad state of affairs when lawyers and their clients are sitting together in the same prison cell. i know it's in there. it's. the jew jailed women lawyers also work at this firm they were arrested in october on terrorism charges their colleague who can't you stay clean cause it a travesty of justice. all this is the current state of justice in our country the police have all the power if they want to arrest you they will this country has become a police state that buckles point is that it negotiable the. other lawyers here say
5:25 pm
more than twenty attorneys are behind bars in turkey at the moment are in hopes things will get better when the state of emergency is over if you want democracy you know what we want to mark receive we want peace and we want to do our work as lawyers to defend people. at the moment though they are more concerned about defending themselves. and you've met some of the people that we saw there in the pews you've also done extensive research on other cases how common are stories like this well one word on the lawyers because i think they're doing an amazing job if you ask a lawyer about do you think that the turkish judiciary is independent they would just laugh at your face and they're saying well but still we are continuing our jobs because we don't know anything else to do and we have to do something at least so the lawyers on a very difficult position. to my knowledge there are at least five more german nationals behind bars in turkey allegedly for political reasons
5:26 pm
a few of them have been released in recent months one of them being human rights activist peter. or in german journalist in the two new and those releases often pending trial still are giving some hope to the case of benazir chilton as usual and his supporters that there will be some developments in this case as well any time soon but this is of course depending on as well the diplomatic relations between turkey and us a little bit in one of the biggest concerns is you know what many describe as a lack of due process for these people who are being held you know in terms of their charges and how things are progressing the turkish foreign minister has promised a new start well but is it likely that the big question of course is a big promise and many of us i'm also hoping for easing tensions in two thousand and eighteen the german government's position is quite clear they are saying communication channels need to remain open we need to talk that's chancellor
5:27 pm
merkel's position that's for a minister position as well but they say there is no not there cannot be a normalization in the relations unless people like they are behind bars without an indictment there are some positive developments because in the past ten months we haven't seen any progress in that case but now. foreign minister charles hall is saying that. his government is now. encouraging the judiciary to speed up the judicial process in the case so this leads me to believe we will see some positive developments soon also the government is always emphasizing that there to disagree is independent of fact but i think assume we will see or we will hear either trial date for the end as usual or we will hear a court releasing him pending trial that's that would be a big step and there are probably a lot of germans out there who will probably believe it when they see it right yulia we think is so much for your reporting on this matter yulia han.
