going into the negotiations americal of conservatives are holding the talks with the center left social democrats after previous talks with other parties failed sticking points this time around are expected to be germany's approach to europe and its refugee policies. let's have a listen now to want america on a social democrat leader martin schultz had to say as the talks got underway. because the c.d.u. is going into these talks with the aim of creating the conditions to form a stable government. that's because we believe that the tasks ahead for which we have the voters mandate are enormous in terms of foreign policy challenges european challenges and also in domestic affairs. we all sensed that the challenges for a new federal government however at me luker be structured lie in that the new year and which we all live must also include

a new kind of politics in this sense we will conduct the negotiations here constructively and with an open outcome. of covering those talks for us is our political correspondent rupert and he joins us now for more so rupert merkel perhaps sounding optimistic but she certainly has a lot of work ahead of her as these preliminary preliminary coalition talks get underway what are the main hurdles for her. well basically we have three parties here sitting at the negotiating table just behind me in this building the social democrat how the quarter there is first of all the e.c. is you the conservative party bloc of anglo american the c.d.u. c.s.u. and especially the c. is you the small of the two parties is more conservative and they have already pointed out that they want to be more strict on refugee policy that they want to

have. less integration into europe on one to cut corporate taxes something especially the social democrats are absolutely opposed to so the social democrats on the other side they are very reluctant to go again into this grand coalition as it is called here in germany as they have been in a grand coalition for the past four years and it didn't serve them at all they also we have to remember made. worst election result in the park city since world war two so they are very reluctant to go into these party talks and then in the end there's chancellor merkel c.d.u. party and that's the only party that has remained calm and during the last weeks they are the only ones that really say yes we want to have this coalition we want we need this prime coalition. seems to be the last chance fungal americal to remain chancellor all right so if these talks fail then what are the alternatives.
11:05 am
well they're not so many in the end. ready trying to form another could government together with the the business friendly liberals on the center left and eco friendly green party but these talks after several weeks of exploratory talks not negotiating not coalition troops but only exploratory talks failed at the end of november and there's no other coalition option left than the grand coalition with the social democrats but the social democrats are not going back over it he said she doesn't want to lead a minority government saying this wouldn't be stable and old so the only other option in the end if these talks here today fail would be new elections something both parties don't want to close all of them though the only window of new elections probably would sit on the far right of parliament. going to be keeping us posted on those talks many thanks indeed. you're welcome
