7:02 pm
those talks got underway. if you can get the news because the c.d.u. is going into these talks with the aim of creating the conditions to form a stable government. that's because we believe that the tasks ahead for which we have the voters mandate are enormous in terms of foreign policy challenges european challenges and also in domestic affairs you know i was one of we all sensed that the challenges for a new federal government however it may be structured lie in that the new year and which we all live must also include a new kind of politics in this sense we will conduct the negotiations here constructively and with an open outcome. well covering the talks for us is our political correspondent kate brady who joins us now in the studio and kate chancellor merkel has surely got a lot of work ahead of her once again as these preliminary talks get underway why
7:03 pm
is it so hard for the parties to find common ground because really basic problem here in that two of the three parties taking place in these exploratory talks over the next few days a very different objectives so you have the social democrats who initially after the election in september ruled out joining call for a grand coalition again and so this is of course a massive u. turn for them and so they'll be driving a hard bargain going into these talks as they try to convince their own delegates and party members that a grand coalition is the right option for them and so some of the demands on the table from them are higher taxes for the wealthy they want a more liberal refugee policy and they also want more integration in europe but at the same time you have to see if you were his the bavarian sister vassie of merkel's c.d.u. and since the success of the far right day in the elections they're really pushing to drive that conservative parliamentary group into a much more conservative direction and they're currently in and compared to the
7:04 pm
s.p.d. they want to cut corporate taxes for example and they also of course want a tougher stance on refugees which is completely opposite to the social democrat so there's lots of issues to overcome here could we say that this is merkel's last chance to for what we term a stable government well it's certainly her last chance to form what would be a clear majority government in german parliament if that if these talks don't come into fruition and turn into any coalition ago she ations and then she just still have two options but neither of their use particularly well supported by the social democrats or the conservatives or she'd have either a minority government so. she's rejected on several occasions oh snap elections and if i thought there's also that concern among life of isolating parties that that would be a book that would actually boost the by afghan that they could actually make things
