a new era in hollywood. this guy. wanted to become i believe that women don't black dresses for the seventy fifth golden globes in a show of support for victims of sexual harassment and abuse in the entertainment industry making the me to believe that the night's biggest winner also coming up germany's under machall and her conservatives hold exploratory coalition talk to the leaders of the social democrats they promised a new style of politics but can they deliver. plus a chance to put tensions in korea on likes figure skaters from both sides of the border look forward to an unlikely reunion at the winter olympic games. i'm terry martin good to have you with us. hollywood has made
11:02 am
a powerful statement against sexual harassment and abuse at the seventy fifth golden globes the event kicks off award season but was overshadowed by months of allegations against men in the entertainment industry and a show of solidarity some of the world's most photographed women wore black transforming the red carpets normal glitz and glamour. they stood arm in arm women from the worlds of film music and sport dressed in black showing solidarity their message sexism and sexual violence will no longer be tolerated they may be hollywood's elite but many here have their own heart wrenching stories of sexual harassment and assault. have together we're drawing a big black line between just. the way things used to be the way business used to be done to be that way. i think it's amazing i think it's historic and i love
11:03 am
seeing solidarity an arab industry shining a light for all industries across all countries and this is the time to change everything it should be shouldn't even have to have this conversation with clearly we don't feel like i'm ok with that conversation continued inside susie as an eighteen marijuana is finally allowed in sexual harassment finally is. here. and in a rousing speech oprah vowed that change was on the horizon for too long women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to the power of those men. but their time is up. and that message was the biggest winner of the night. thanks.
11:04 am
d.-w. culture editor karen helm has been looking at that award ceremony karen good morning to you. this me two movement obviously it took center stage there at the awards ceremony last night how did make its presence felt well you know i think it's something that we're going to see shape the entire season because you know this is the very first awards post harvey weinstein and i think it's pretty safe to say this is going to be a season of discontent i mean obviously there was the black look there was the you know the red carpet blackout the mood was was good but much more sober and very political and see seth meyers we saw bit of him there but he took he certainly pulled no punches mr weinstein and kevin spacey with about not a few jokes and we've seen the whole need to. movement really morph into this time's up as we heard oprah winfrey say there and that's an initiative of over three hundred women from across hollywood not just actresses but getting to
11:05 am
producers and writers and executives and casting agents etc and they are saying time's up for sexual harassment and for lack of accountability in this industry. it's interesting that the women were far more vocal on the red carpet first of all but also in their acceptance speeches the men were disappointingly less vocal have to say so time's up as it were in the entertainment industry is this protest addressing sexual harassment exclusively or are there other issues at stake you know definitely not i mean this is the whole thing with that with the time's up it has really broadened out there calling for the end of harassment and obviously this culture of sexual abuse in the entertainment industry but all. so for more diversity for gender parity and for equal pay across all industries. two thousand and eighteen equal pay is definitely still in issue in entertainment and music. they've also set up an interesting thing time's up legal legal defense fund and
11:06 am
that'll be to subsidize victims in all industries across the country sexual assault and sexual harassment so they're really hoping to make change on a large scale let's see what happens i think we're going to see we're going to see that developing and hopefully it'll get a momentum and my story will clearly continue a lot of talk this year about abuse and exclusion in the film industry let's move on to the films themselves though that were the focus of the ceremony. at the german movie in the fade took the award for best foreign language film it's by german turkish director keane and it stars the actress joining him here diane kruger tells the story of a woman whose husband and son are killed in a bombing she suspects neo nazis were behind the blast the film echoes the so-called n.s.u. attacks here in germany as a neo nazi terrorist cell that shook germany in recent years. so current
11:07 am
german director father king they're taking home the award for best foreign language film and he was thrilled obviously tell us more about the film itself it's called in the fade in the face i mean great news for german cinema first of all this is an incredibly strong story that speaks definitely very deeply to german audiences in the wake of this and as you can scandal and ongoing trial that you just mentioned there. so it's a very personal film for how to hakim who has turkish roots it's a scathing commentary on the justice system in germany and what it is able to provide so it's very gratifying i think for everybody involved that it is striking such a chord with foreign audiences it's the role of a lifetime for diane kruger who despite her job. and heritage is performing here in her very first fully german language film and she took best actress for this role already back in cannes last may so hats off to hottie i can for her seeing that potential in her for bringing her over i think that's
11:08 am
a match made in heaven will be hoping to see her in more german work and the golden globes are always considered something of a bellwether for the oscars you know so. they're still in the running there to they're on the shortlist hopefully going to get a nomination on the twenty third of january we'll know if it's going on what about some of the other notable wins of the evening looking ahead to the oscars ok of all the interesting thing that happened was that i think a lot of people were expecting dunkirk to possibly take best picture this sort of incredible world war two epic of christopher nolan. or the post and people were probably thinking the post should have taken it over dunkirk but came in from the side three billboards outside by mark madonna and he it's an incredible film very very strong. performance by by frances mcdormand so another really strong female role t.v. series also did really well a big little lies a lot from them and handmaid's tale so with with elizabeth last picking up and she

dedicated her when also to the to the author of the source to the canadian author margaret atwood and. said something along the lines of we are no longer the standing on the white edges of the page we are no longer the gaps in between the stories we are now the stories i'm writing them ourselves so big plug for for that an alias grace another novel of margaret atwood's is being made into a series as well so i'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more really great television material kurt thank you so much current help from our culture this pleasure. now back here in germany chancellor angela merkel is leading talks. aimed at forming a new governing coalition today is the second day of those exploratory talks with germany's approach to the european union and integration among the blocs members is said to be the key points of discussion well merkel's conservatives are holding discussions with the center left social democrats the chancellor led previous talks
11:10 am
of the greens and pro-business pretty democrats that failed to produce a coalition in november. while covering these talks at the c.d.u. headquarters in berlin for us is our political correspondent. this is chancellor merkel's second attempt to form a government following september's election how are things looking at this point. well all sides say they're really interested in having constructive talks and actually making headway on substance one must of course bear in mind that after the social democrats initially saying that they would not continue the governing coalition those very two parties that are still in government now talking about whether to make a fresh start and that is so much harder for the social democrats than it is for the c.d.u. because the social democrats feel particular grassroots feel that they lost out over those past so-called ground coalitions that they had with chancellor merkel
11:11 am
who successfully managed to they say to sell things like the minimum wage as partly her success so today they're due to talk about europe that should be a lot easier. of course was the former head of the european parliament and that's what both sides are hoping to signal towards french president called that there should be a positive from germany on his vision for europe but of course it's always down to the details down to money isn't it those negotiating in that building right beside you they've agreed on not giving in any interviews during the talks but as you might expect some people are not sticking to the minister the state premier of saxony in the c.d.u. crutch but he gave a statement anyway let's listen to what he had to say. i don't like the basic tone we are currently talking a lot about spending money and i think politics is not about spending as much money
11:12 am
as possible but about making financial leeway possible for future generations investing in the future and this must now come more into focus. we have a situation in germany that is better than ever before. we have economic growth. we have very low unemployment we have almost zero percent interest. and. the government shouldn't be focusing on redistributing wealth. we have to remember that money needs to be earned before it can be spent. that's why creating more bureaucracy for companies isn't the right path. so a little talk about money a little talk about bureaucracy what does this tell us about the atmosphere for these talks. well you said you have very different views here i mean that was a very regional view saxony where the far right alternative for germany is very
11:13 am
strong so we heard from a prime minister there that is trying to fight it out with the far right if he and that's in a sense a common struggle because the some of this is democrats and i'm going to michael's see do you feel here but talk will definitely also be about money and about the bigger picture of how they want to set themselves up particularly on the issue of europe but domestically there are big differences in deede so democrats would like to see a complete system change when it comes to central issues like health care for instance the christian democrats say that is simply not on the cards from the side ok health care a clear sticking point what are the other stumbling blocks the big stumbling blocks in this negotiation that could hold up from forming another government. well another one is migration when we're talking off key issues like how many migrants could legally come here to join those already accepted. as asylum

seekers although they have many of them have a less a status now that these are technical details but the bottom line really is that the social democrats that party the class roots will decide in the end on whatever agreement could potentially come out of this and that really the social democrats and. insults will have to prove that they have one big project that will make the difference in the coming government insults was quoted by german daily built citing as saying if this fails my political career is over well that could potentially also be says the german chancellor merkel if she fails to pull this together carol thank you very much did all these political correspondent make killer cough no moving on to some other stories making headlines around the world today former white house advisor steve benen has apologized over remarks he made in a bombshell book that rocked the white house past week but it was quoted as saying

been saddam and the crown pins off saudi arabia knows that also his reputation is really on the edge he has been trying in the past to open his country also more for foreign investment and from the frankfurt perspective also very interesting is going to be the i.p.o. off the company health in years it would be the biggest i.p.o. since daughter telecom happening and also very important here for the reputation off the frankfurt stock exchange because remember that the men's was deciding between wall street and frankfurt and at the end decided for frankfurt down although there are many alternatives to going public to get companies to get some financing why astore so many companies still doing it you're totally right at the moment he also with a zero percent interest rate in the euro zone it's very easy to get working capital for companies and even smaller companies they are at the moment more focusing for
