this is interviews lined for berlin it's decision day here in germany political leaders have just a few hours to go to reach a deal on starting talks to form a new government while they meet the deadline and what happens if they fail also coming up. thousands rally in pakistan to protest against the shocking rape and murder of an eight year old girl with the killer still at large they want to know why the police were so slow to react and why it was this senior iranian

cleric accused by activists of crimes against humanity allow him to get medical treatment here in germany. where the rock is great to have you along. political leaders here in germany are bracing for a long and difficult night of negotiations on the americans conservatives and the center left s.p.d. are trying to see if they have enough common ground to enter formal coalition talks so as the exploratory talks enter their final day chance on what markel says many hurdles still remain. lobbying groups have been protesting outside the talks every day now among them trade unionists who fear the end of coal mining in germany and those solidly against another health reform today they were joined by supporters of the european union calling for deeper european integration

a demand supported by social democrat leader martin schultz. but builds on a such a regular government authority that it must be under the condition that our strengths nice europe done will be discussing douglas and it's something we all support in principle. he wants of the harmony. but there still disagreement over exactly how deep european integration should be other known sticking points between the conservatives and the social democrats are refugee policy and taxation but chancellor merkel remains optimistic the talks will reach a conclusion tonight. with the there are still big hurdles to overcome. speaking for my party i can say will be as constructive if s. possible in our search for compromises. but of course we are also aware that we want to deliver the right kind of deal for the country. that means it's
5:03 pm
going to be a tough day. mithun with this i in the talk via both sides have agreed to an unused embargo until the end of the talks therefore very little information on potential breakthroughs has emerged so far negotiations are expected to run into the night. and charlotte posse is at the social democrats aged care where the talks are taking place charlotte negotiator save the most contentious issues for last what are the main obstacles and how tough will it be to overcome them. well let me start with the good news first there are certainly things that the two parties have agreed on are ready we are hearing that they for example want to increase a police force something uncontroversial or that they agreed on a new immigration law to attract workers skilled workers from beyond europe to germany so there are certainly things they agree upon but as we heard the
5:04 pm
chancellor in the piece before there are big hurdles still to overcome for example the issue of refugee policies especially the issue of family reunifications for refugees from civil war torn areas that will be discussed though we are hearing that the social democrats might be able to separate fights on that another issue is the budgeting there are forty five billion euros to give away for certain projects who gets what and another contentious issue europe though both parties make it a priority it is not clear how much further integration of europe there will be on the continuation of a possible continuing to new nation of a grand coalition overall we're hearing though that the atmosphere is good and that the that both parties remain optimistic and confident that to reach an agreement at some point. in this night from thursday to friday it'll be a long night that's for sure hour and a long night ahead if talks end up being says successful what happens next what's
5:05 pm
the word for forming a government. well then the tricky part actually starts martin shultz the leader of the social democrats will tour germany and he will campaign for the results the preliminary results that were reached in these exploratory talks and he needs to complain very hard because the grassroots of the social democrats is against a continuation of the grand coalition so he will have to convince his ponty members who then will meet at a party convention in about a week time and at that party convention they'll vote on this whether they want to have a new grand coalition or not after that a coalition talks could be could be held with the christian democrats and then the social democrats will have their party base vote on it so overall it's going to be a very long complicated process and it's going to be weeks maybe two months until germany actually sees
5:06 pm
a new government if everything goes as according to plan our shall prosper forty thank you. and to find out more about what germany can expect from an extension of the grand coalition to w a news reporter hannah cleaver spoke with a senior member of the center left social democrats thomas opperman most of them in the german the stop isman seems to be pushing towards another grand coalition it feels a bit like could goods train with no weather option is this really a choice does germany have a choice here. well the grand coalition is something like nobody loves it but everybody believes the government is needed and there is no other government inside beside a grand coalition so we as we have serious negotiations about a new grand coalition it is difficult of course but i am
5:07 pm
optimistic that it can be successful now a wise man once said that village democracy needs new ideas and new people to come in willoughby any new ideas from what would effectively be a continuation from the same government as we just had it cannot be a continuation of what we had because. we have serious problems ahead of us right now germany is in very good shape we have a strong economy we have high up and crime and we have a surplus in revenues but that will not stay the way it is unless we invest a lot of money in infrastructure we have a great effort huge deficit unless we invest a lot of money in our educational system and unless we stabilize the european union . all these questions have to be solved and there have to be you know
5:08 pm
new ideas of course. to continue this government otherwise it will not get together they just i mean that the problems are not new the people are not necessarily going to be new if it does come to a grand coalition how are you going to shake it up. i don't know yet it depends on you know what. the negotiators will come up with. we have seen that. we have done good work in the grand coalition we have improved the lives of many people for example by implementing a minimum wage in germany for the first time but that did not help us in the election. we got our worst results since one thousand nine hundred forty nine and so it cannot be just the content you ation of the last grand coalition definitely not we need new ideas more justice more investments if that doesn't
5:09 pm
happen it probably will not take place we have a party that has to give the green light for real negotiations and at the end the members of our party will make the decision the other party that everybody in the world is looking at towards it in germany is the f.t. alternative of germany they may well become then the largest opposition party and in the german parliament how would you in your position as vice president of the parliament how will you give them their democratic right to speak without allowing that the german parliament to become a sounding board for a far right vs that would be a real. political hard consequence if the a f t. would be the strongest opposition party in the bundestag the leader of the opposition practically. but the a f d who was elected by the
5:10 pm
german people and they deserve equal opportunity like any other party in the bundestag no special treatment i believe that we should not give them the opportunity to describe themselves as victims of the political establishment that is what they really prefer to be appear. and we want. to give them we don't want to give them that kind of opportunity the world is watching germany waiting for germany to get a government organized what would you tell people would you tell other governments apart from it's all going to be ok. well the world may be waiting for a german government the fact is in germany there is no crisis because we don't have a regular government just a preliminary government. but it is true that we do need
5:11 pm
a government that can actively. shape the european future together with michael who is still waiting for months now to get a response to his reform suggestions and i believe that this is a great opportunity even though we have right wing parties all over in europe it is a great opportunity to really make the european union more attractive and more stable and that is what we need a government and i hope hope i hope that we will have it before easter ok so if you're a betting man as well you put your money well i would not bet on it but i'm optimistic thank you very much thank you terry. cautiously optimistic there what does it all mean for the mighty german economy ben you heard him saying there that it's. a fantastic german economy right now and he wants to keep it that way and german

business leaders do not want to see you will leg sions they say that to be a horror scenario the best for them is continuity that's what the markets generally like and europe's economic engine is performing better than it has in a long time final twenty seven growth figures are in and they're impressive a two point two percent surge is the best result in six years. full order books soaring exports and a shortage of skilled workers to unload germany's economy is thriving and exports are forecast to grow a further five percent this year as well flying start for the next government which could look forward to a tax revenue bonanza so there's money there which germany's industry federation the b.t.r. once used to modernize the country it warms the new government not to waste any time. we have to invest more which means public investment but also means private investment so preparing the conditions for. intent more

intense private investments in the sector of digitization in the sector of public transportation. but also in different sectors starting from schools and universities he set or other problems are also waiting for an incoming government the global economy is laden with risks the b.t.r. is especially worried by the threat of trade barriers and increasing state interventionism german companies cite china's behavior in particular. china is a very important market for our companies especially for the industrial part of our economy. on the other hand we see that china has a very strict strategic agenda. and we see an increasing influence the political party. into the individual business but even the u.s. and britain are becoming increasingly unpredictable trade partners the v.d.i. says it's high time for a new government to take office here to start taking the necessary decisions. let's
5:14 pm
get the take from frankfurt by daniel corporate financial correspondent is standing by daniel forming a new government walk us through the different scenarios and tell us what investors there are telling you. but i guess ban every investor will be watching very closely what is going to happen tonight if we're really going to see a coalition talks happening or if it's not going to work like we have seen when i'm going to america wanted to form a government with a green and the liberal party that scenario by the way was never very much appreciated as a result we also did not see any kind of a landslide here happening at the stock market a grand coalition i guess is also pretty much bittersweet appreciators of course we have to say that the last eight months of the government. from the investor perspective was you know rather doing very well we have those very good numbers but
5:15 pm
investors on the other hand are also kind of wanting something new kind of new innovation that we have not really seen in the past at least what they are telling me the worst scenario and you just mentioned it of course as well would be a new election this would be also ruining the image of germany in europe but also around the world ben no matter what way it goes there are risks ahead in twenty eighteen measuring those coming back to those great figures record exports record growth no surprise the workers want more money this morning to know where is the money. yeah exactly we have those records figures coming in on the other hand unions are saying well why are we not seeing record wages there are many sectors here in germany that's tough for example about the health sector but also some parts when you talk about engineering and also the steel industry
5:16 pm
they have a very low wages that's why we are seeing already at the moment taking strikes taking place in different parts of the country and we are now hearing that those could be come even more in the next days and weeks than then you go thank you very much for the analysis. i'll have more business news for you next hour thanks i want to tell you now about that harrowing story out of pakistan where the rape and murder of an eight year old girl has shocked the nation the incident sparked violent demonstrations two protestors have been killed in clashes with police saying they've been sorry is the twelfth girl to be sexually assaulted and murdered in her hometown over the past year with the killer still at large demonstrators accuse police being slow to act. anger boils over at the death of another little girl and investigators failure to find out who killed her

and the diplomatic channels that come with it remain intact now depends on the u.s. president's donald trump is expected to decide on friday whether to reimpose sanctions against tehran. officials here in germany have launched an investigation into a senior iranian cleric who has been receiving treatment at a hospital in this country my mood. today is the former head of iran's justice ministry after discovering he was in germany the local kurdish community and human rights groups file charges against surety accusing him of crimes against humanity well german authorities say they're continuing to investigate the claims despite reports that the cleric flew back to iran earlier today all right i'm joined now by max zander he is at hamburg airport where shruti is believed to have flown from max
5:23 pm
good to see you what do you hearing on the ground can you confirm these reports that mr surety has left the country. well yes there have been reports that it's not maturity it's convoy from hannover where he was under medical treatment arrived here at the airport at around one o'clock this afternoon and i was during that time i was here on the flight terrorists there's visitors terrorists here at time of airport and i was able to see preparations that were underway on the iran air aircraft bound to tehran one thing that was highly unusual was that there was a second gangway put on place on a very small aircraft and most likely to give me a little bit more privacy making sure that he could draw less attention while he boarded the aircraft and it's two o'clock with about how half an hour delay the aircraft took off so it's quite it seems quite likely or it's it seems quite
5:24 pm
obvious that he managed to leave germany by hamburg airport but there were plenty of people here at the airports protesting and making sure that he would not be able to leave on notice here in terminal one it was a group of iranians about two dozen people holding up flags chanting death to come in a supreme leader of iran death to the president rouhani and calling shruti a terrorist ok well let's talk about that what are some of the charges being leveled against him what are they to kucing him of having done. we showed he's a very important figure in iran he's a possible successor of supreme leader hominidae he's a cleric and member of a important political body but most importantly between ninety nine and two thousand and nine he was the head of the judiciary and during that time thousands of death sentences were carried out in iran and most of them some serious human rights violations of them minors as young as thirteen years old were tortured and
5:25 pm
executed in public hung from cranes and i talked to the organizer of the protest here at the airport she openness to really and she's in touch with many people in iran and in contact with victims' families and she told me of about some horrific stories that took place tell me about women and women who had been stoned to death for committing adultery which in reality means they had been raped so we're looking at some serious human rights violations some serious some serious allegations here and most important the question how could somebody who was most likely responsible for all of that to come to germany and leave without even being questioned mag sound or reporting thank you. all right well now to the winter olympics which are just four weeks away and some athletes still don't know if they'll be going to the games in shanghai i know those looking to compete isn't a cold he competed in five alpine skiing events at the last olympics in sochi but
