this is the w. news live from berlin that talks lasted more than twenty four hours and would describe just turbulence but after a marathon all night some german political leaders have made a breakthrough in discussions about forming a coalition government but there is still a long way to go also on the program. president trump accused of using folder language to describe african countries in haiti he denies the reports but a democrat says he heard the president use those words.

i'm phil gale welcome to the program nearly four months after germany's general election political leaders have now and agreed to enter into formal coalition negotiations chancellor merkel and social democratic leader martin schulz announced a breakthrough after all night discussions here in berlin bringing the country a step closer to a new government but the deal isn't done yet medical insurance must now convince that party members to say yes to the agreement and allow formal coalition talks to go ahead. it was a long time coming including a twenty four hour marathon session last night now there's an agreement on paper but with some rough edges the three parties are working from very different platforms and promises to constituents tired but proud the three party had to announce to a successful outcome and some compromises they say they can imagine working together in

a grand coalition. i think this document is the result of some give and take and that's the way it should be in a society filled with such a wide variety of people and will have our work set out for us when a new government is formed and we set out to put it into practice. but the onus is on this man as p.d. party chairman martin schultz is under pressure after the election he said he did not want to enter another grand coalition but now he has to convince his party to do just that but i clock we have three goals. solidarity that we want to organize. innovations that will take us forward and trust in each other. that's essential in a government. guys that. we want to see if the spirit of cooperation was there and i think the answer is positive on the americal is under pressure as well because for over three months germany has been functioning without

a new government she wants to see germany active on the european stage once again europe is a focus of the party's new blueprint for talks and the conservative party's advisory board stands behind this negotiation result but things look different with the social democrats six of forty members on the party executive board voted against moving forward with coalition talks there are fears about how the party base will react. i think we are on the right path but we have to be careful to remember this one just work out automatically the twenty eight page document is up against heavy criticism from the opposition just as expected this is. an ambitious to lead this country into the future and there is no answer to digital change no flexibility in the pension system on the contrary it seems to do injustice to future generations very expensive measures in a grand. chancellor merkel wished success to the leader of her would be coalition

partner the s.p.d. now it's up to martine schultz to convince everyone at the party conference and get the party members to vote with the yes if all goes well germany could have a new government by early spring. let's get more from w.'s political correspondent thomas sparrow welcome thomas so the three parties detail that agreement in this twenty eight page document whose hard to give way on was. i think the conservatives the better deal when it comes for example to all the issues on migration that number that we've heard about the migrants that are with the will be or could be allowed into into germany the idea of family reunification as well those are issues where i believe conservatives had a better deal as far as the social democrats they probably had a better deal when it comes to draw the social issues regarding children and families and also as well the investment in education in infrastructure those are

issues that they were obviously try to sell to the party members into the party delegates i think both parties will also try to sell that idea of of europe of integration into the european level oversea now this is only the first step towards a grand coalition now obviously the different parties have to try and convince their own delegates and their own members so who's going to have the biggest problem selling this to their membership. undoubtedly the social democrats fail next week on sunday the twenty first martin shows will head to bourne and inborn he will have to try and convince the party delegates there who will then have to decide where the party enters the formal negotiations that's not forget that this is only exploratory rounds what we've been seeing in the last few days and even after that even if the delegates say yes and even if the social democrats and the conservatives agree on
8:06 pm
a new coalition agreement then all the party members and we're talking here of a lot of passion members will then have a final say on whether the social democrats enter a new grand coalition so there's a long long way ahead of us and a long way which i would say is also a very difficult way for the social democrats in particular. if the next round via actual tall pharao or indeed if the membership on either side decides no we don't want this well then this was really the last chance for angela merkel to try and form a coalition government after the previous chances that she had with the so-called jamaica coalition collapsed if these new rounds also are not a success then germany will be confronted with a series of options one of them would be a minority government led by the conservatives or another option would be fresh elections and fresh elections is something that most parties that most politicians here in germany do not want to avoid oh sorry wanted to avoid so that's probably

one of the reasons why all these different politicians here are trying to make an agreement even when they know that this will be an agreement that not necessarily everyone in the party rank and file would follow. now let's take a look at some of the other stories making news around the world scuffles are broken out between police and protesters during a rally in the tunisian capital today eight hundred people have been arrested in the country this week while demonstrating against tax increases and new austerity measures demonstrators demanding an end to the measures which the government says are necessary to revive the country struggling economy. in the u.s. state of california rescuers are still searching for several people missing after massive mudslides that have killed at least seventy three rails earlier this week caused walls of mud and debris to slide down hills in areas north of los angeles.

there's a white house says president trump will agree approve the nuclear deal with iran which grants sanctions relief to tehran and exchange for curbs on its nuclear program but mr trump's administration has warned it's the final time and approve the deal unless it is changed significantly he's reportedly denounced the agreement with iran is bad for the united states. will stay with the united states and president trump has disputed reports about his alleged use of vulgar language insulting haiti el salvador and several african nations it said claimed that mr trump asked lawmakers and advisors why are we having all these people from these countries hare he reportedly suggested accepting immigrants from places like norway instead but at least one senior democrat lawmaker has come forward to say he heard the president use the term mr trump tweeted that this was not the language used but admitted to using tough words is alleged colorants provoking strong reactions at

home and around africa let's get more from d.w. washington correspondent carson phenomena and catherine i'm wondering in the kenya's capital nairobi for. welcome both we'll start with you. we'll start with you catherine. we've heard what some people on the on the street are saying what's the been the political fallout belike. well the african union has made it clear that they are condemning this statement saying that they're actually surprised by it and they were very keen to remind president donald trump that the u.s. economy was actually aided by you know immigrants from africa who had taken here for as slaves to work in the fields and in america so that was this strong statement that came from the african union but we also have the president of

botswana who said you know that he's equally appalled by the statement but also some of the u.s. ambassador in that country to explain that particular statement even though donald trump has come out deny it it is no hiding the fact that he did use those words and that it has created a lot of reaction so he wanted the u.s. ambassador to explain what that means for botswana and what that means going forward but when is the south an african country which is one of the strongest african economies that we have on the continent let's bring in the conversation cost of a moment in washington well cost and the president facing accusations of racism today on a day when he was actually set to all of the civil rights leader martin luther king jr how is the white house reacting to these criticisms. much. trouble by reporters a bold those alleged remarks during that ceremony he didn't react to it we've seen

the tweet in which you denied that he used those exact words but one of the leading members of the democratic party senator dick durbin a was in. in the room during the conversation went on a trump was said to have made those comments he said he did it he just said this he used those words and not just once other people have also confirmed this if you have also denied it but whatever you believe the crisis management of the u.s. government is really not that strong i just saw the best of haiti a few moments ago talk about this that nobody had reached out to him and he hoped that the president would apologize also number of democrats have called on the president to apologize even a few republicans but knowing donald trump that is not very likely. mr trump is suggesting that immigrants from africa are a burden on the u.s.

system does the kenyan example support this view. no it doesn't support this view in the sense that a large number of african immigrants go to the united states to study go for you know as professionals or go through the law to system which is one of the issues that were discussed within you know in america that brought about the statement by president trump but then when you look at the specifics you have african immigrants who are among the hot most highly educated immigrants america has compared to you know its citizens in one case you can look at african immigrants having at least forty percent of african immigrants having bachelor's degrees and over compared to thirty percent of american citizens but then when you look at the specifics when it comes to kenya kenya the remittances from from kenyans living in the diaspora has over pasta as has the past foreign exchange like tea coffee and tourism.

in the united states alone those kenyans who live in the united states remit about one hundred eighty five million dollars to the economy that was in two thousand and seventeen so they're not really a to the american economy as such but these are clearly productive people come through and wonder because you've been in washington thank you. i know it's different countries decide to take part in the winter olympics in film charging in february including plenty of them may not immediately spring to mind in taiwan when twenty three year old lucia sportsman is hoping the games will give a boost to winter sports in his country. faces are new usual challenges for. mainly wrote shafiq. the winter libyan trains on wheels rather than blades and on the roads rather than the run. the time

when he's climate isn't exactly conducive to excellence in winter sports but is unpaid by his disciplines local obscurity that was shown as anything else dictated by hope that the sport can be carried on and that taiwan can have people participating in each winter olympics hopefully more and more people. there's a lot more to lose than just lying down early and he's keen to improve the disciplines profile in taiwan where winter events in general receive fairly little attention he believes that winter sports can establish themselves even in this unusual climate. he might be one of the few taiwanese athletes to have qualified for pyong chang. but if he gets his way there will be plenty of his countryman following in his tracks in the future. german chancellor angela betts conservatives on the social democrats have agreed on
