5:00 pm
this is d.w. news live from valley incumbent miller she is a man wins the first round of the czech presidential election but he failed to get a majority needed to avoid a runoff and that means the checks will have to there's the polls again in two weeks time. posts are coming up donald trump or news iran nuclear deal for what he says is the long time that the us president says he'll pull out of the agreement soon unless what he is disastrous floor was a six. and

a step forward for women's rights in saudi arabia for the first time at the women have been allowed to enter the stadium to watch online poker game. time have a home free thanks for joining me in the czech republic incumbent diminishes a man has won the first round of the country's presidential election now with nearly all of those ballots counted the pro russian zaman gone at thirty nine percent of the vote that's far short of the majority needed to avoid a runoff he'll face the pro european candidates yes he did harsh in two weeks' time . milosz zyban was preparing to cast his vote when he was confronted by an activist from fame and not good to put in slot she shouts and once again zimmerman is the focus of media attention just as he likes. the ice famine
5:02 pm
recently attacked the poll i am on or that they also attacked me. zeman is used to making headlines he's aimed at journalists with a fake rifle railed against refugees called for an end to sanctions on russia and there's no one to indulge in worldly pleasures. i'm voting for the man because he's against migrants and he's a good man. i just hope the next president would be like zaman. symon did not even bother to take part in the election debate instead his main rival. came out on top of that mainly because he is a respected a somewhat dry academic a contrast the same on the czech president's popularity in the provincial districts has landed him first at the polls. zaman connects with people in rural areas he polarizes paints the world in black and white and promises easy solutions it is
5:03 pm
classically populism. still zeman hasn't secured more than fifty percent of the vote in the first round he will face dry horse in a runoff later this month. and journalist in winnipeg is with us now from prague explain to us why manish is a man appears to have been able to reach out and gain support from rural voters. there are some on extra present himself and some out of the people each race he slopes uses vulgar language he also likes to attack what he calls the liberal elites and that seems to play well with voters outside the capital also in the czech republic there is very low unemployment but there's also a lot of low paid employment and it's these people especially outside of pride in the countryside with low paying jobs that he seems to be a human too he also plays on fears of migrants specially. muslim countries
5:04 pm
and i think essentially as you heard in your report what he does is classic populism and i should point out that he was one of the few e.u. leaders who publicly backed donald trump when he was running for election in the u.s. who likes to kind of align himself with from the right so we're talking about classic populism as you say that he paints himself as a man of the people the czech president's role however that is largely ceremonial with some palla what has you know she's a man managed to achieve in his first ten. the role is largely ceremonial and has some powers for example a kind or a pointer or other judges or governors of the of the czech national bank us mr simon is the first ever directly elected czech president and he has really stretched the role to be diminished of what he can do as president he really tries to take maximum political advantage from what he can do under the constitution he
5:05 pm
says that he has a creative interpretation of the constitution as for what is a compass points are well he has reinforced ties with russia you can call it an accomplishment he's also strengthened ties with china but i think more than anything what he's done in his five years as president has been to divide check society allow these two lines of pro pro e.u. road west or looking more to the east all right well in light of that division is that and looking ahead to the second round how much of a favorite if say to be reelected. well he's less of a favor going to was before today's first round of the well because he got under forty percent he got thirty nine percent which is a lot less than opinion polls gave him his nearest rival and usually about him he got twenty six or twenty seven percent and prior to his liberal councillor proly you prior to today's vote a number of liberal candidates came out and said that they would support any
5:06 pm
liberal who got through to the second round if all of their supporters go to the polls in chile extern vote against me watch them and they would have a combined total of something like thirty four percent of the of the of supporter of balls in the second round so if that actually happens what we're looking at i think could be the end of our cell and he's been one of the german politicians here in the czech republic and it's ninety nine period but it looks like his days could be numbered unless you can stage a fight back in the next few weeks in willoughby in prague thanks a lot president donald trump has decided to stick with the international nuclear deal with iran at least for now but he says he wanted to prevent again unless it is changed that trump says that the twenty fifteen agreement contains what he calls terrible flaws suspends international sanctions on iran in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program every three months the president is required to
5:07 pm
sign a series of waivers to keep those sanctions suspended i think he you and russia have warned that ending the deal would have negative consequences. iran expert to the top of his frequently in teheran for us joins us now in the studio now iran's foreign ministry has already put out a statement in response to donald trump's remarks i just want to take a look at it now because it says that the islamic republic of iran stresses clearly that it will take no measures beyond its commitments on the nuclear deal and would accept no changes to this agreement now or in the future so just does that mean that teheran is expecting it is preparing itself for a confrontation with the united states over this it looks that way to iran's been preparing for the worst case scenario for more than a year a member of president rouhani his office just recently said and who can blame them for that because president trump us basically started threatening to rip the deal apart the moment he went on the companion trail so it's an option they've got to
5:08 pm
consider but you have to see that it wouldn't be a confrontation just between the u.s. and iran but more for confrontation between the u.s. and all the other countries that signed the deal because europe and russia and china think that the nuclear deal is working and that should be preserved i mean of course europe has its own concerns about iran's ballistic missile program about its influence in the region and human rights issues but they think that should be treated separately because that was not part of the deal let's just take this deal down from its diplomatic a little bit and think about how important it is for the economy of iran and for the people living there that this deal is preserved it's very important that's why it's had that much support in iran in the first place because the sanctions were taking their toll on iran's economy that's why president rouhani agreed to limit the country's nuclear program in return for sanctions relief but you have to see that iran has met its commitments the international atomic energy agency certified
5:09 pm
that on a number of occasions since the deal was signed but the u.s. has not lived up to the spirit of the agreement because they basically started threatening to. but the pod the moment they signed it so in that house cost many european companies especially to kind of shy away from doing too much business with iran because they're afraid they might be punished for it now or in the future so many average iranians haven't really benefited from the deal as much as they could have and we've seen incredible scenes in iran as of late as well with the biggest anti-government demonstrations i mean is that then any chance that this could see those kind of demonstrations break out again while any economic decline could because the economic situation was the reason these protests started in the first place high unemployment rising prices and inflation and all of which hardliners blame on rouhani by the way because the a nuclear deal has improved the situation the way you promise so. if the deal was
5:10 pm
terminated now or in the future by the u.s. there would be likely to get even worse and then go honey would be weakened a lot and hardliners would benefit but that of course. would end in a way where europe and the u.s. would have no chance at all to talk to iran about other issues there are unhappy with anymore because hardliners are not going to negotiate with their arch enemy in washington about their ballistic missile program for example right. thank you very much. sports news now in the winter break has come and gone and the bundesliga is on the way again now things started last night with another victory for writing champions by playing away against laver couzin it was a case of business as usual the variance how the module has got by and off to a fly in the thirty second minute off the home could be made it to nail they've occlusions kevin for lunch then who won back
