were complaining about economic inequality many people dislike the cultural shifts associated with migration some people fear terrorism and what the authoritarian populists did is take the grievances and scapegoat. is to say it's the migrants who are at fault to see asylum seekers it's the refugees and that effort to sort of. minority for people surely. is to arise a populist. and to talk more about this issue i'm joined now by andrew stroller. he's the european media director for human rights watch he joins me from paris where the world report two thousand and eighteen was not welcome and are not as cut populist hostile to human rights are shaping politics how has this impacted the e.u. and governments. well twenty seventeen has been a really interesting year for how the so called refugee crisis has developed and
1:04 pm
how it has impacted on politics really throughout the e.u. and throughout the western world more widely i think we've seen some really worrying trends and how certain xenophobic populist politicians have been able to. take people's fears and really convert that into a deeper fear and in some cases outright hatred towards outsiders or people perceived as outsiders they goes beyond refugees immigrants and asylum seekers it goes on it goes into deeper into this our idea of people who have been there for years and sometimes decades a lot of the central issues mentioned in your report is shifting responsibility for asylum seekers and refugees outside the borders of europe one of the problems with this with this approach. yes the e.u. and many of its member states have this idea of sort of outsourcing what they see as the problem. there's two main areas where they're doing this one is in the

mediterranean and with libya. hoping that the libyan coast guard will do what they can to do and won't do and european forces can't do and won't do by law and shouldn't do by law anyway that means that the libyan coast guard will then pick up people off boats and bring them back to libya where they faced her run this abuses and i think you know everyone will be aware of what's happening in libya in terms of. outright slavery in some of markets sexual abuse is just what people are being sent back to there is appalling. and it shouldn't it shouldn't happen so that you wouldn't be allowed to do that do that under law and the house hoping that you know the libyan coast guard will do their dirty work for the thank you going to put suggest this turkey has seen and know the setback in terms of human rights what are some of your conclusions on this. yeah will be others and the other the other the other side of it was turkey where i got in with

an evil turkey deal that was made between brussels and i car. in march twenty the scene sending the idea that the asylum seekers would be sent back or that migrants if you sent back to turkey which is really it has just undergone a human rights crisis i would call it thrust twenty seventeen you know in the in the in the aftermath of the failed coup we saw the president ramping up a tremendous crackdown on everybody on journalists on academics on dissidents on opposition politicians i mean you know it it's just it's one of those situations where you just wonder how far are they going to go how many thousands of people are arrested and have lost their jobs or been pushed out of their jobs by this by this political crackdown it's really quite extraordinary and restraint on the european

media director of human rights watch in paris thank you very much for talking to d.w. i do very much. as he had to he faces intense criticism for violating human rights including a crackdown on journalists the german tech is john this dennis you chill was put in jail last year his case triggered a serious rift between germany and tekkie the two countries are now trying to repair their relations off their first bilateral talks in months the some reports suggest that germany could end on zimbabwe's slapped on korea after addressed but the genesis he does not want to gain his freedom as a spot of any potential what he called dirty deals. from his prison cell in turkey denise you chel said he rejected any trade off that would see him released in exchange for new arms sales to turkey. he told the german d.p.a. news agency for my part i don't want my freedom tainted either by the sale of tanks

what israel says was a stone throwing assault on its troops. the girl is sixteen year old i head to mimi and she's become an icon of the palestinian resistance. this soldier is a symbol for the occupation that has taken our land our country and killed our people since the december incident our head has been in custody and being charged with twelve counts including assault and incitement now she could face a lengthy jail sentence. head is from a well known activist family in the west bank and is no stranger to confrontation in two thousand and twelve she was filmed hitting a soldier in ramallah and three years later she was pictured biting another soldier as he tried to arrest her brother her detention has sparked protests at home and around the world with rights groups saying that as a child it is not justified. for many israelis though the teenager is

service recorded winds gusting up to one hundred forty kilometers an hour on the coast and this was the scene at answer sheeple airport earlier today all flights were suspended at the peak of the storm the national rail service also halted trains across the netherlands earlier today the storm crossed britain leaving much of scotland covered in snow and thousands of homes without electricity. you're watching the news coming up ahead author of decades of exploration researches can finally confirm this is the was along with known underwater caves we show you what has been discovered in its depths. but first it's not there to welcome our nickel and there's some good news finally for us exactly and it comes somewhat as a surprise rita emirates airlines has announced it would buy twenty eight three eighty super jumbos with an option of sixteen more and that deal is with sixteen
1:14 pm
billion dollars it comes as a big relief for the european aircraft maker because eliot this week apple c.e.o. john levy had admitted the a three eighty program would have to be discontinued if a deal with dubai based didn't happen soon on the a three eighty the largest passenger plane in the world has proven to be too big for many carriers turning apis proud this project into something of a nightmare for the company. but looks like that nightmare is over at least for the time being let's find out what's in store for the future of the a three eighty coast of course my colleague and our very own aviation guru is here with me in the studio is the f.a.a. to protect saved well that's the way john lee put it at least for the next ten years and some years more up until the twenty's thirty's the project will be continued as he said without the emirates deal you mentioned that production may
1:15 pm
have been discontinued as early as twenty twenty four if not earlier due to possible cancellation of orders so indeed this is a much more positive outlook we have to bear in mind that airbus has already scaled down production. to fifteen planes last year twelve this year nine next year so the curve is declining here all in hopes of stretching the timeframe of production in order to get your orders. really a slow seller and the interesting thing is i mean i remember reporting on it just a few days ago that any of its was due to signed that deal a couple of months ago and didn't and now it does with this change of heart coming from well america didn't give a specific reason here but we have to keep in mind this deal is worth a reported sixteen billion dollars but have you rebates are much a common thing in this sort of business so we can assume that. a much less hefty or price tag may be attached to the deal now also emirates had made it
1:16 pm
a condition that the engines of the a three eighty and may may be updated to be less if you consuming we have not gotten any information weather has obliged here but it is a fact that emirates is the most important customer to airbus when it comes to the east really. more more than one hundred of the delivered a three eighty s around the world have gone to the emirates out of the two hundred twenty four that were all delivered but this shows that being reliant on one major customer is only another lie a lot of pressure is not a comfortable position to be it never is but one has to say that investor certainly welcoming that a deal as soon as news came out as sort some three percent as far as i know that's a record high for those shares so that's good news. nevertheless i'm confident that was a three eighty is
1:17 pm
a slow seller why do so few customers like it well the idea behind the a three eighty was to run it on roads routes between big transporting a lot of people between shanghai and new york for example or london and new york and these these kind of places but it turns out this this was a misconception of the future of using market because many people want direct flights even from smaller. airports to other destinations so what. have resorted to now is running long distance planes that arsenal were smaller yes but that can go direct race and they also have only two engines would certainly easier to maintain and cheaper to operate so that's those are the reasons why these three eighty has not really caught on and so it seems that some fine tuning is still necessary there for the a three eighty s. of course thank you so much for this fight for

politically correct is a dream come true. trump's opponents see this as another disturbing attack on press freedom rider elise's we laugh about the fake news awards but it is in fact white terrifying and chilling this is what happens in dictatorships and fascist regimes facts language truth and ultimately the press become hijacked to serve power not to question it or hold it accountable. and the awards generated enough attention to bring down parts of the republican party website just to trump treated them this coming saturday mastan transfers full year in office as us president of the spend the speaker looking back at the last twelve eventful months in the white house or higher was one of the battleground states that handed trump his election victory in two thousand and sixteen but has
