women's march in washington. promising a year ago to bring america together it seems the country is divided as ever what are you hearing from the demonstrators around you. that's exactly what i'm hearing from protesters here as you can see behind me the demonstration that has already started but people are still arriving and when we look at the picture behind me you can see the dads the numbers are lower that the picture is different that what we sold last year after president strums integration when people were mad shocked the spirit that presidents trump was elected as the president of the united states i talked to a couple of people here women and they told me that some of them are more optimistic hoping that democrats are going to win a lot of seats in the house during the midterm elections but some of them also

told me that they are more pessimistic because they have to to deal with presidents try with this unconventional presidents on their day to day. alexander trump himself is dealing with a government shutdown. at the moment on the anniversary of his inauguration are there any signs anything you're hearing that suggests that the government may find a way out of this gridlock. well what we're hearing is that there is a lot going on on capitol hill that democrats and republicans are working on a possibility to have and this shutdown by monday and to give themselves a couple of days maybe on till the seventh of february to negotiate on issues like immigration what we saw in the report and border security and when you listen to white house officials they are quite confident that

a deal can be reached although that we can't but of course we have to wait and see whether it's possible. xander just briefly trumps first year overshadowed of course by a number of scandals how has that affected his popularity. well his approval rating is that record low his core supporters support him. he is according to different polls he's a pro the rating is about twenty five twenty c. percent ok alexander many thanks for that there's alexander phenomenon reporting from washington. we're going to catch up now and some of the other stories making news around the world veteran irish politician gerry adams has handed to the leadership of the nationalization fein party to may remove mcdonalds lead the party for thirty four years and was known around the world as the political face of the

5:10 pm
remind you how we got to where we are election day you may remember it was september the twenty fourth last year the social democrats suffering their worst result since one thousand nine hundred nine and this man him party leader martin shultz categorically saying the s.p.d. will now go into opposition what happened then was that chancellor merkel opened exploratory talks with the free democrats and the greens those talks however failed in late november so the focus shifted to president frank. as you can see here he urged martin short that's the back of his head there to revise his decision to go into opposition and talk instead to the conservatives about renewing a grand coalition after weeks of negotiations in january d.s.p. these leaders agreed on a preliminary agreement with the conservatives and they recommended starting full coalition talks with them now we get to tomorrow sunday that is when the s.p.d.
5:11 pm
is holding its special party conference the rank and file voting on that recommendation from their leadership to enter full coalition talks with the conservatives the party that is deeply divided on all of this as speed the leaders have been meeting this afternoon to discuss tomorrow's vote so we're going to get the latest now from our chief political correspondent melinda crane who's been following all this for us melinda what's been happening today and what above all is the mood among the social democrats ahead of tomorrow's party conference well as you say the s.p.d. leaders have been meeting officially and in officially you can be sure there is a lot of arm twisting going on and a whole lot of nervousness not only amongst those leaders of the s.p. day but in fact germans in general. the numbers are very close almost certainly also among the chancellors conservatives because indeed the numbers are very close at the moment we're hearing one third would say yes to this position paper yes to
5:12 pm
moving forward with cowen a coalition ago she asians one third would say under no circumstances should we pursue coalition to go she asians and we're told one third of the delegates six hundred in all are still undecided now for leaders like martin short's whom you just showed to our viewers this could be the last twenty four hours at the head of the party because heads could well roll if in fact there's a no vote now the man who's been a leading the charge against the party leadership who says absolutely no to this position paper that's been put out there is a twenty eight year old head of the party's youth wing and he says he doesn't want to see heads will but the fact is that could well be the consequence so as i said nervousness and a lot of uncertainty something's been happening in the background as well some social democrats calling on their leaders to impose conditions on the conservatives for agreeing to launch full coalition talks is that a wise move or a bit of a risky one it's
5:13 pm
a problematic move that move comes as we are told it's not been officially put out there by the relevant state party groups but we're told that two of the most obstreperous state groups have said they want additional conditions especially saying yes we'll move forward on negotiations but not on the basis of the paper that the two parties agreed to in fact adding as it were more s.p.d. wishes to the list and their wishes that the conservatives could find it very very hard to comply with so what could that mean it could mean that if that goes through and if the party says yes to negotiations on that basis then it then gets into negotiations and the conservatives say sorry we can't go along with these wishes that would then turn out to be a problem because even if. we get agreement on a grand coalition even if we get a coalition paper that again has to be voted on by the full s.p.d. membership and they might well then say no you didn't insist on those conditions
5:14 pm
and we don't think we see enough of our s.p.d. are really crucial key priorities in this final document that's probably going to be the next very very big hurdle just quickly about tomorrow what are you expecting yes or no i was afraid you would ask me that you know i've been expecting a yes but i would say my odds on that are shrinking i think it could be very close and i'm still going to say yes but with a real measure of of uncertainty about what comes out and frankly if in fact we do see you know where your germany goes from here is a very very difficult topic and in fact would take so long to explain to our viewers that i'll stop there ok melinda crane our chief political correspondent helping us understand everything today and you will be with us tomorrow of course to help us understand what is going to be an exciting day in politics that is your
