down it says its tanks my cross the syrian border lighted today. germany's political future has been shaped today by one party the center left social democrats their due to hold a key vote on whether to enter coalition talks with merkel's conservatives social democrat leader martin schulte is in favor of forming a new so-called grand coalition but he faces resistance from within his party form a coalition talks can only begin if schultz gets a yes vote from the gathering of social democrat delegates in bonn a no vote conveyed to minority government or fresh elections. sunday is the big day for the s.p.d. party leader martin schulz he'll face one of his most difficult votes so. that we will have lively and controversial debates we just had a long meeting with party leadership and the debate was similarly animated.

brandenburg state premier is confident his party will vote for a new coalition government. the people in this country expect us to act they expect the social democrats to look after the people and thinking about poverty among the elderly or pensions nursing care insurance people need us to action now. six hundred delegates and you to vote on whether to enter coalition talks with merkel's conservatives some s.p.d. regional groups have already made their recommendations but delegates here are free to vote according to their conscience five regional groups have come out in favor of launching coalition talks lower saxony. brandenburg but three other states. have recommended voting no the wild card is north rhine-westphalia which is sending the highest number of delegates to the conference social democrats they're split on how to vote.

it's going to be a tight result and i think we're going to back coalition tox much of our base may be skeptical and we are too but at the end of the day we want to shape policy and no one wants new elections. the head of the social democrats youth wing sees that differently young s.p.d. members have been leading the charge against the grand coalition. i'm joined now by our correspondent thomas sparrow s.p.d. congress yvonne thomas there's talk of a yes but with conditions the powerful regional s.p.d. branches in north rhine-westphalia and has are calling for concessions to the blueprint coalition agreement are they likely to get what they want there's a lot of resistance here among party delegates and party members even among those who would probably vote yes later today those who would probably vote yes but
9:07 am
rather skeptical would like changes to the blueprint if you will to the guidelines that the social democrats and the conservative bloc agreed a few days over that twenty eight page document that was the result of the so-called exploratory talks so it is probable that martin shows will face a lot of pressure today when it comes to that vote in trying to get concessions if they do enter coalition talks for example on social justice issues social justice issues that are particularly important for the s.p.d. at the same time however the conservatives and in particular are going to michael will be will not be very happy to give them those concessions they have indicated that what was agreed in that blueprint shouldn't change all that much so it is still unclear whether these delegates here who are asking for more proposals from martin shows if they do enter coalition talks they will actually get what they want so who's dead set against the agreement and what do they say. in
9:08 am
particular the youth wing of the social democrats the so-called users have been very vocal about their idea they believe that under no circumstance the s.p.d. should enter another grand coalition their arguments based around two key issues on the one hand they say that the only way the s.p.d. could renew itself after a two year bust part of a grand coalition which they see that the image of the s.p.d. was tarnished is by doing so outside of a grand coalition in other words from the opposition the second argument that explains why they are against it is that they believe if they entered another grand coalition then the main party in opposition would be the be the alternative for germany the party described as populist or right wing and that's something that the youth wing the users want to avoid so those are the two key arguments that explain their opposition to another version of the grand coalition history do you get the sense that the s.p.d. leadership is nervous or do they seem quietly confident they are certainly
9:09 am
nervous in particular after seeing how many delegates and how many members are certainly not convinced about the idea of another grand coalition what we're going to see today is not only about the s.p.d. internally it is something that could certainly have an a wider impact and that's something that martin shows the leader of the s.p.d. has clearly said this he said this is not only about the s.p.d. this is also about germany and even about the future of europe so i could clearly say that the party leadership is not confident and is certainly nervous about what's going to happen here later today thomas sparrow at the s.p.v. congress in bonn thank you very much. in the us democrats and republicans have been trading blame for the shutdown and the federal government funding senate majority leader mitch mcconnell has now set a new vote for early on monday just hours before the start of the new working week mcconnell had harsh words for his democratic opponent chuck schumer. he wants to
