them around. martin shows specifically mentioned two areas in his speech which finished a few minutes ago here in bonn one he stressed what the party had achieved in the exploratory talks with the conservatives on social justice issues and also on his european policy which is something particularly important for him the second argument that he stressed is that those exploratory talks and in particular the twenty eight page document that came as a result of those exploratory talks is not necessarily written in stone in other words that if the delegates here accept to enter formal negotiations there is still some room for the party to present and past some of its proposals those are the two key areas that martin shows strength in his speech now we are listening here to rather different opinions of the person speaking behind me is against another version of a grand coalition and she has stressed some of the arguments that other members of

also stressed that idea of renewal and that renewal would have to happen outside of a grand coalition so as you can see a very lively debate here and a very lively debate which included martin short his speech although i must also say the reaction was not as enthusiastic as it was in other occasions for what he had to say about the future of the party thomas thanks for that but first let's have a quick look at what martin short did have to say and how he's trying to win members around to saying yes today when they vote. you know single ladies and gentlemen those who say categorically that no matter what we could achieve we should under no circumstances into a coalition government they should be aware that that is not what i stand for that is not my approach and that's not why i entered politics also that is not how the leader of germany social democrats should behave cartesian. thomas he was speaking

pretty fiery there but as you said there are people now speaking that want to vote no can you tell us why they are against this new grand coalition. there are mainly also two arguments why people are against another grand coalition one is that they believe the party suffered under the previous grand coalition and that that was clearly evident in the election on september twenty four where the party had a very bad result so they believe that the party should not continue with that path which led to that bad result they believe that the party could do better by entering the opposition on the one hand they would be able to plan that renewal of the party that they've been speaking about here from the opposition on the second they would also be able to prevent the alternative for germany from becoming the main party in opposition so those are the key arguments why some members here in particular from the youth branch of the s.p.d. the so-called users are against a renewal of the grand coalition but the s.p.d. has some of their lowest polling numbers yet aren't they aren't those that want to

vote no risking a new election. certainly they are risking a new election and there's no guarantee that the s.p.d. could do better if there were a fresh election and that's one of the arguments that have also been discussed here that fresh elections could also be more risky risky for the party then if they decided to enter another grand coalition so you certainly have different options on what the future of the party should be on the future of the party by the way is also linked to the future of the country because that will determine what the future government in germany would be if the delegates here vote against it germany would be most probably leading into fresh elections although the minority government option is obviously still possible thank you very much thomas sparrow in bonn. not some of the other stories making news around the world u.s. vice president mike pence has arrived in jordan on the second leg of his first middle east tour pence's defending president donald trump's controversial move to declare
