2:02 pm
democrat leader martin shields is in favor of forming a coalition but he faces strong resistance from within his own party and a no vote could lead to a minority government which merkel has already said she won't lead or it could lead to fresh elections. should they seek to join another coalition government with angle americans conservatives or should their priority be to renew their own party so they can win back support they've lost in recent years that is the tough choice facing this congress of social democrats the s.p.d. leadership are united in arguing in favor of the deal leader martin schultz told delegates that many people are looking to the s.p.d. to represent them against conservative policies the only move in the no name on. the five workers pension is single parents school students in trainees people who are renting their homes these are our people these are the people who are relying on us for not it's also also said the rise of nationalism across europe means
2:03 pm
social democratic ideas are more needed than ever. is a nation of billick can you know. this right wing wave across europe can be broken by a german government which supports democracy human rights freedom in europe just because the s.p.d. is part of it of that reason alone it's worth joining this government you can even go saying you know it's not everyone at this conference is convinced by these arguments the influential leader of the s.p.d. youth wing is bitterly opposed to another coalition with angle americal it's a lot it's been made up absolute this is a grand coalition the common ground has been used to this it demands on all of them often to begin with and cannot see what all the six hundred delegates here agree on is that sunday afternoons decision has the potential to be a turning point for germany's political life.
2:04 pm
right we can't turn now to our correspondent thomas sparrow who is joining us from the congress on tell us you've covered a few party congress is in your day this is a very different what is that stake here for germany for europe. well at stake is whether germany will be able to form a stable government soon after more than one hundred days since that election on september twenty fourth angela merkel's conservatives previously tried to form another coalition with two smaller parties the liberal and the greens but those talks failed and was left with the task of trying to form a coalition with the social democrats in the social democrats are in general very skeptical about the idea of joining a new grand coalition the divided understanding that is clearly evident here in bonn whereas the party leadership says that they could at least try and shape policies if they do negotiate with a conservative and if they do enter another grand coalition there are many in the party not only in the youth branch of the users who think that that's the wrong
2:05 pm
path to go who believe that the best part for the s.p.d. would be outside of a grand coalition and outside of a grand coalition would mean leading the opposition in parliament if i want to talk about this division this is a very fundamental question whether to do another grand coalition or not is there a confrontational atmosphere in bonn today. to a certain extent there isn't but in fact i could say that both those who are in favor of a grand coalition and those who are against talking about similar issues where they differ is in how they want to achieve those issues both for example martin short and some members of the users speak of the renewal of the social democrats that need to try and regain lost trust and lost confidence from the voters but whereas martin shows and the leadership believe they can do that from a government from a grand coalition that you branch believe that they should be able to do that better if they are not in another grand coalition if they do it outside without the
2:06 pm
pressure of trying to push those policies forward so to a certain extent you can certainly say that there is a very big divide a divide that is clearly present here in bonds if it would be a great irony if uncle americal who has led germany for so many years would lose power due to an intra party vote that isn't even her party what is really at stake for uncle americal today. but that is certainly rather quick approach there doesn't mean that if they vote here against the know the grand coalition angela merkel would lose power she would still have other options she was still have options she actually doesn't favor of the minority government and there would also be a possibility of fresh elections there is obviously a big question what will happen in those fresh elections but the vote here does not necessarily mean the end for angela merkel a long path ahead even the focus here even if the delegates here story decide

against that new coalition for anglo-american we can say that for sure it is a very big and a very difficult day indeed. thomas let's look briefly at the other side of the ledger what if they do vote for entering into grand coalition talks what happens next. well they would start those coalition talks they would start those formal coalition talks and a big question there is to what extent the s.p.d. would would be able to change some of the aspects that are in that document that the conservatives on the social democrats agree generally exploratory talks on that martin shows himself stressed here that they would like to change some of the aspects there but obviously the conservatives are not very happy about that and they would like to see some of the points or least most of the points in that exploratory talks also part of a formal grand coalition and thomas ferro thanks so much for joining us from the s.p.d. congress. right and some other news turkish back to troops have entered the northwestern syrian region of offering turkey's military announced that

a couple of hundreds of thousands of civilians including displaced families from other war ravaged areas in syria so for them the next days are probably not going to be safe at all. you know retired did say he is going to flush out what he describes as terrorists. why does he believe that kurdish groups pose such a threat to turkey. well the text government says the syrian kurdish groups have links to the banned kurdistan workers party the p k k that has been waging its own fight inside turkey for decades now and the ankara government is especially worried there could be some kind of a kurdish corydoras developing along its border and this could then further inspire a separatist notions in turkey's kurdish community. yulia both the
