this is the w. news live from berlin a nail biter of a vote with a narrow margin a decisive moment for germany as the social democrats vote to begin coalition talks with conservatives. this is in there were six hundred forty two votes three hundred sixty two people voted yes and two hundred seventy nine voted no there was one abstention as such the s.p.d. will embark on formal coalition negotiations and that paves the way for formal discussions on forming a government brain germany one step closer to ending months of political

uncertainty also coming up in the show turkey fires mortars into northern syria making way for its troops to cross into occurs on quiet i'll get the latest on the controversial military operation from our correspondent in turkey. and in the bundesliga hamburg says farewell to coach moscow's move comes after a bitter loss to fellow relegation candidates cologne. i met her in thanks for joining us now it has been some four months since germany's parliamentary elections and tonight the country is finally one step closer to forming a stable government for social democratic party has voted to enter formal coalition talks with chancellor angela merkel's conservatives and initial show of hands was too close to call so. every vote of more than six hundred delegates at the party

conference had to be counted individually that outcome a clear majority of favor of moving forward with the goshen ish's. the vote was too close for comfort but in the end relief of the s.p.d. leadership martin schultz has the green light to continue negotiations that could lead to another coalition government with angela merkel's conservatives yes p d is still in the game and there's still a chance that it will at least put its stamp on the policies of the next german government find points in one percent of something is more than one hundred percent of nothing so if we can do something good for people than a country if we can do something for europe and people around europe i believe and i know many have a different view but my view is we should do it. can be part time feeling and zoltan. the major policy lines have already been agreed between the social

democrats and conservatives the coming final round of talks will be about details but s.p.d. leaders say their approach will still be tough. we are not giving up on the s.p.d. by deciding to join the other party in government. in sunday's decision also means a personal reprieve for martin schulz who's standing within the s.p.d. has suffered after it had its worst result ever in a general election and schultz did a very public u. turn on the question of joining a coalition he now has to secure a final deal with miracle but win support from the s.p.d. party membership. and speaking of merkel she is addressing germany right now. this after intensive this is a discussion that was a positive result pave the way for a coalition negotiations what's important to us in these negotiations is that

germany gets a stable government which is able to tackle the questions and issues of the future and find solutions for them this includes economic strength but also the necessary changes that we need in the age of the child is ation this needs to be the basis for social justice and safety and these are the central to ask us to get our heads around the as were very talks paper will be the basis for negotiations a lot of questions need to be solved in questions that need to be negotiated in the ten minutes required going to require intensive discussions we are preparing in the president and in the executive committee of the conservative party to these negotiations and with the union the c.d.u. n.c. as you is going to sketch out our negotiation strategy tomorrow and then we will

start very quickly with the we go see asians with the social democratic party a lot of work is ahead of us but this work needs to be targeted and will be carried out intensively and a reasonable climate in spite of all controversies and this is what this day has and with the decision of the party thank you very much. write a pithy statement from. about the work that lies ahead i'm joined in the studio by belinda crane our chief political correspondent and also for an analysis of merkel's remarks and how she is likely to approach things light of this s.p.d. decision we got. outside of the chancellor here in start with you this is a relief for despite what she said about all the work that lies ahead. right definitely a sigh of relief we've just heard from her herself she is now looking forward to

leadership is meeting here in berlin to discuss. basically the further plans on how to go about this you know we have further plans from the s.p.d. as well this is not over yet the vote has to go to the full membership of this party well linda do you think that the decision that was made by the party leadership today is going to carry through into the members that is a very big question and to some degree they have set the bar a little bit higher by what they did in the course of of last night and essentially it was this they went into this very very uncertain about whether the party members who were meeting today would agree to proceed with negotiations on a grand coalition as you know there was tremendous opposition from the parties youth wing so essentially what they did was give away a bit on one point which they had gotten. a lot of pressure from two of the toughest state factions and that was to reopen three different issues
6:08 pm
and to try to push for more concessions from the conservatives on health care issues on some labor market issues and on issues regarding refugees now the big question will be. if they don't get additional concessions from the conservatives will the party base then say hey but you told us you were going to essentially renegotiate that position paper that was the rig it's the result of the exploratory talks and then you didn't wind up changing anything at all so i think there is a challenge there on the other hand they have now lobbed the ball into the court of the chancellor and she now also will be under some degree of pressure at least to create a little bit of room for maneuver the big question is her bavarian conservatives will they give her that space and so after watching all the fissures in the social democratic party we may now be watching the fissures in the conservatives yes
6:09 pm
indeed just picking up on what you had said about some of these maybe over promising and not getting caught would you or would you have some remarks from andrea knowledges who is the general secretary of the s.p.d. where she's trying to convince the voters that there might be a bit more wiggle room and what they can get out of the c.d.u. c.s.u. let's run those remarks. these are the old and equally we're going to take the coalition negotiation seriously. negotiating means going back to the table on labor and health care and sunday we're going to negotiate until the other side squeals i can't promise you any more than that i don't know if we'll get one hundred percent of what we want probably not but we're going to negotiate and get small good results that's why voting yes today is worth it thank you johnston seeing john thank you. but there's charlotte i know you said the city you're in the c s you're
6:10 pm
going to be meeting in the chancellor read this evening have the wheels begun to emerge from the building. and sorry i didn't get that question sorry i was trying to make a bit of a joke about hundred dollars his remarks saying the s.p. do what will negotiate until the other side squeals here but i am not sure that that's going to be happening any time soon well. yeah we mean we are going to see this so the conservatives are meeting tonight the very insistent party is equally meeting tonight in munich to discuss how to further go about this and what these what this positive result no means for the coalition talks i think what is important to remember he has said listen a bit of a dilemma she has to concede in a way to the social democrats so they can present the results of the coalition talks and to their member base to the four hundred and forty thousand members who are in the end going to decide if germany gets the new grand coalition government
6:11 pm
in the end and on the other hand so she has to concede to the social democrats but on the other hand of course she has to also make her conservatives happy and not spock any opposition within her own party and it's going to be very difficult for her because the alternative if these talks fail would be either a minority government or new elections and those both two options that that not on the dragging but also basically politicians across the aisle dragging even though we have to say a minority government is the more popular of these two options right charlotte. and linda gray right here in the studio with us thanks very much for joining us. well turkish backed fighters have reportedly entered the northwestern syrian town of offer in the attacks are part of an offensive on kurdish militias turkey's military says has so far struck more than one hundred fifty kurdish militia targets
