davos the international n.g.o.s oxfam releases its annual inequality report and the bottom line is the gap between rich and poor is widening the number of billionaires worldwide reach two thousand and forty three last year their combined wealth increased by thirteen percent and that means eighty two percent of the global wealth generated in twenty seventeen went to the top one percent of the world's population the so-called super rich and here is the food for thought in only four days the c.e.o. of one of the world's top fashion brands as much as a seamstress in bangladesh makes throughout her entire life and to add insult to injury the richest people in the world are experts in tax avoidance. they are paying two hundred billion dollars less in taxes than they should according to the respective laws of their countries compare that to the development aid paid out by the leading industrial nations which stands at just one hundred and forty five billion dollars now earlier shallot becker from oxfam germany joined me here in the

studio and i asked her what's going wrong when tackling the issue of inequality. two things that are going wrong mainly it is the tax avoidance widens large scale text avoidance by the super rich and by corporations and it is also corporations that are paying wages that are often hardly enough to survive you mentioned the example of the seamstress in bangladesh something goes wrong here because we have excessive personal gains and profits at the top but at the bottom there's just nothing that critics of course which turn around and they do turn around some of those and say ok but just because a rich person doesn't help a poor person in another part of the world so how is that correlation working out for you well there is a correlation in so far that if corporations are not paying wages that a decent or that enough to make a living all over the world there is a correlation with the super rich who own corporations and the poor of half of the

humanity no tax avoidance is a big seem not just when a release is a report. if this tax was paid let's just be idealistic and say everybody pays the tax that they should pay how would the poor benefit from it they would benefit from it because governments would finally have the financial resources that they're urgently need to invest in vital public services such as health care or education because these are the fundaments for poverty reduction and for functioning societies but that is where this money should go to ok we just heard last week this was discussion in the e.u. to take some of those tax havens off a blacklist that was only introduced in december that doesn't seem to be the right way forward no definitely not so this blacklist it started quite ok but that and there is almost half of the tax savings is gone what we need is more transparency
12:20 pm
governments need to put an end to the dramatic race to the bottom of corporate taxation and we need an end of the era of tax havens that ended just very briefly why does your report coincide with the world economic forum every year this is the time of year whether a wealthy and also the influential meet and davos and we use that moment to show the other side of this other because they're from germany on the inequality report thank you so much thank you. and you can find more on the oxfam inequality report on d w dot com slash business. malaysia's economy roared ahead in recent months showing the largest expansion in three years the overwhelming majority of this output is fueled by coal fired electricity plans owned by john providers such as petra s. providing electricity to small villages is hardly a priority in developing economy moving as fast as malaysia's so social entrepreneurs are moving in to help turn on the lights in the countryside. the

people of pasco dong aren't hooked up to the electrical grid even though they live just four hours from the capital kuala lumpur ten years ago the malaysian government installed solar panels here but few of them are still working. out what that's why gurpreet singh has come to the village. around four years ago he founded the social enterprise farm. gives workshops to village residents that trained them and how to repair the technology then the lights and small appliances here will work again if you're going to see if you learned well we've got a little shop. most of the village residents can't afford the spare parts that the b.g. b.g. team has brought with them from the capital they're financed by donations and crowd

funding drives. electricity for all the company has taken on responsibilities usually assumed by the state. we can take initiative to me in teens i mean it seems that we want to see is sometimes when there's a problem in this takes a little bit of action and that action is definitely lacking not only in this we need to see all around the country and if in recent malaysia no consumes around five times the energy it did back in one nine hundred ninety it's a developing country with a burgeoning population that's hungry for products like air conditioners that's where as reno your service company comes and it converts conventional air conditioning units to consume fifty percent less electricity the exact method is still a trade secret the technology hasn't yet been given all the necessary patents but use of has already landed big customers like this eco resort. the way that we

can. we should be doing the green card i don't. think that you need. them because when you begin. and other potential customers from the u.s. have also come knocking the energy saving air conditioners made in malaysia might soon become a mainstream product. now the german business world heaved a sigh of relief on the euro gained a few points too after germany center left social democratic party voted to begin formal coalitions talks with i'm going to map those conservatives the news comes as a confidence boost to german business leaders but they're also concerned to the to germany is lagging in the digital transformation of industry and they want to see a new government make that a top priority still the german economy expanded by over two percent and twenty seventeen boosted by high employment and large investments now so how upbeat

is the business world here in germany about this result let's get cast in gestes chief economist at i n g d by bank and joins us now in frankfurt good day to you i know that the german industry leaders were very disappointed when the business friendly free democrats opted out of coalition talks at the end of last year what's the business world's making of a possible revival of the grand coalition. well i think the view of business were very similar to the the people on the street and they're not looking really for having a government which would already be a good thing in the eyes of the business world which which means the in the grand coalition if we take the the paper from the exploratory talks at least they do more investment in the infrastructure in digitalization which is a good thing for for the entire economy and also for the business world when you mention digitalization the head of the german industry association has criticized
12:25 pm
that particular paper all those preliminary talks that not enough action is included in there in terms of digitalisation what more needs to be done do you think put some numbers on it because i think that is the criticism that hold for the whole for the entire paper it looks good has all the right elements in it but very often lacks details lacks clarity and there's also holes for digitalisation i think that there's structure the strategy for for future it for this is not clear and it's believed missing some numbers now europe took center stage in that paper as well do you think that the social democrats in the conservatives see eye to eye there is the friction on the horizon. nothing with the possible grand coalition we would clearly have another pro european german government but also here the bill is in the detail because when you look specially at the the level of the munter union the euro zone the paper also lacks clarity aleck's. clear strategy because the only
12:26 pm
thing that the paper has here for further strengthening the monetary union is to make the e.s.m. the european stability mechanism the european monetary fund but we don't read anything about banking union we don't read anything about how to tackle the plans of micro can germany as europe's biggest economy survive another grand coalition is it perhaps even good for the country. really from an economic policy where what this grand coalition would probably bring is more of the same so it would extend the current positive cycle because there will be a bit more fiscal stimulus there are no big economic mistakes in this program so we would clearly extend the current golden syrup cycle by another couple of years but the big structural reform which would prepare the country for five years or ten years ahead is not included in this in the paper of a possible new grand coalition all right let's find out what will be discussed in
