and more than three months after the murder of an anticorruption journalist in malta d.w. meets local residents carrying on her fight against government corruption. i'm brian thomas a very warm welcome to the show just over half of germans think the chance for all a macro should stay on at the country's helm more than four months after germany's national elections she still has not managed to form a new government and germans are losing patience and new numbers out are even worse for her potential coalition partners the social democrats germany's largest center left party is looking at its lowest approval ratings ever. germany's social democrats need to regroup they're still the second largest party in parliament but their standing has been flagging since the party's poor election results last

september the latest polls suggest if people voted now chancellor angela merkel's conservatives would score thirty three percent of the vote far ahead of the s.p.d. which would get only eighteen percent and that's just four points ahead of the far right alternative for germany party which would score fourteen percent the business friendly f.t.p. would score ten percent the greens and the left party eleven percent each the center left s.p.d. recently agreed to formal talks with chancellor merkel's conservatives with the aim of forming another grand coalition public opinion on the prospect is mixed. to this means a standstill nothing will get done it's a lame compromise thanks for that it's crucial for germany that the two parties unite at where i was hoping for a different result less than half of those polled forty six percent approve of
10:03 am
a grand coalition government fifty two percent disagree but just over half still think chancellor merkel should keep her job fifty one percent of german surveyed felt good or very good about the chancellor remaining at the helm while forty six percent had a less favorable opinion of her leadership. i think that i would have liked to see a change but you can. support the chancellor that we have no other choice. both parties will meet this weekend for further talks but even if they're successful in forming a coalition there's not much enthusiasm for it on the street. some young from our parliamentary studios here to talk more about this simon good morning to you germany split over all america all right now lation are under attack right now they're facing criticism from within their own parties because mikel is chancellor her personal support has dropped ten percent since the general election
10:04 am
back in september but more important than the personal approval ratings is just this sense that things are really moving forward increasingly you're seeing people within the conservative ranks saying that you know may be chancellor merkel and america won't be the person to lead that party into the next election whenever it comes sooner or later maybe they're saying you know i'm going to medical isn't the future you know whenever it comes that's the big question isn't it the talks resume today they're supposed to wrap up on on sunday both sides are sounding optimistic are we going to see as some suggest a government by march well i think that is likely if they can do this deal and that's a big can of yet they've worked out a g. compromise for instance on the question of migrants coming to germany but there are still some other areas like health care for instance like labor policy and some
10:05 am
others where you know the social democrats particularly want to see more compromise from angle of those conservatives and the math has been offering more money last night you know to see if that helps to do the deal spose to come together over the weekend maybe sometime next week but of course any deal that. on will be put back to the social democrat membership four hundred fifty thousand people they'll have their chance to say whether a deal has been done is enough for them and that is the big question mark what are the social democrats going to do they're going to vote on this in the party itself it's in steady decline looking at its lowest polling rates ever eighteen percent what's going on well i mean the social democrat party has been in decline for a period it's been very close to to close most most of the membership would say to angle americans conservatives for too long but in too many coalition governments of this kind and you know it's difficult for them to put forward their

ideas and win support on that basis and this is really what people within the social democrat side are concerned about just losing that profile that they once had ok we'll know where all this is going on sunday simon young thanks very much. now for some of the other stories making the news this hour police have sent in reinforcements after clashes between migrants in the northern french city of tell a left more than twenty people injured authorities say some of the wounded were hit by gunfire police are reporting the violence initially broke out between afghans and eritrean migrants fighting with sticks after meal distribution. was in the mouth of a celebrated a court order releasing opposition politicians including a former president from prison the court ordered a retrial saying the guilty verdict had been influenced by the government this ruling could change the balance of power in this indian ocean state.
