twenty sixteen election campaign. trump has long had a truck relationship with the f.b.i. . and special counsel robert muller's investigation into the trump campaign's possible collusion with russia has also been a constant thorn in the president's side. trump has accused the f.b.i. and the justice department of skewing the rush in favor of democrats interests and against those of republicans on twitter he said they were politicizing the investigation. and now a controversial memo is the latest salvo in this conflict drawn up by republicans and released over the objections of the f.b.i. and justice department it alleges bias at the nation's top law enforcement agencies . a committee led by republican lawmaker devin newness voted to release the memo which says the f.b.i. used improper means to spy on trump campaign aide carter page. not surprisingly
3:03 pm
democrats take another view. the top democrat on the committee that voted to release the memo says it's meant to undermine miller's investigation. the point was to selectively declassify information so that it would support a narrative favorable to the president a characterization that trump projects he's defended his decision to allow the memos release that were sent to congress it was declassified congress will do whatever they're going to do but i think it's a disgrace what's happening in our country. and with us in the studio claire richardson who's been following this story for us ken as we just heard in that report at the heart of this memo is the allegation essentially that the f.b.i. used improper evidence to gain a warrant to spy on one of trump's aides and what exactly does this then mean for relations between the f.b.i.
3:04 pm
and the white house well this is a very rare public split to see between the president of the united states and the country's top federal law enforcement agency and to understand it you need to see the memo in the context of mahler's probe into russian meddling in the twenty six you know actions so let's take a step back and think about what the memo says it alleges that the f.b.i. abused its power supply to spy on a close aide of donald trump during the twenty sixteen election campaign and for trump this shows him that his long held suspicion that the f.b.i. is out to get him that they have an inherent bias against him has some foundations the democrats of course see it quite differently they say that actually this memo was had cherry picked information that did not paint a complete picture of what. of the actual scenario and that the information had been chosen in a way that was going to be purposefully misleading they said were going to be a threat to national security and both sides have been going back and forth all week on whether to release it they voted down partisan lines republicans said let's
3:05 pm
let out in the public so the question is then did the f.b.i. actually acted properly in this case well after all this back and forth the interesting thing is that the owner of the memo doesn't seem to really have a smoking gun and in fact we're not so much clearer now what it actually means as we were before both sides have kind of stake their claim in the same way that they had before and not all the details contained in the memo really necessarily undermine the miller probe for example the advisor carter page who we saw in that last report. the spy warrant for him was approved four times by a judge and even signed off on a by trump's hand-picked deputy attorney general and that was something we saw in this memo so it doesn't quite make the case that the republicans were hoping for and what can we expect the fallout of this to be and of course the consequences potentially on the rusher investigation right well it's not clear yet how much
3:06 pm
damage this has done to public trust in intelligence gathering agencies in the united states f.b.i. have protested on these grounds that this was a slippery slope to open the door to political causes being able to see their work and use it for political reasons the democrats are hoping they're going to be able to release their own memo as a rebuttal sometime next week and take back control of this narrative goes ahead with his investigation. richardson covering every aspect of the twists and turns of this developing story thank you very much indeed and italy at least six people have been injured in an apparent racially motivated drive by shooting the attack occurred in broad daylight in the city of much at ata police say all the victims were foreigners that arrested wanted tahnee national in connection with the attack they said the man had an italian flag wrapped around his neck when they detained him local media reported he shouted long at live it before surrendering to
