4:02 pm
against him well we'll get more on the case in just a moment but first let's take a closer look at up to him and his dramatic arrest. the end of an international manhunt on the eighteenth of march twenty sixth seen belgian special police capture one of the most wanted terrorist suspects in europe the man believed to be the only surviving suspect of the paris terror attacks that just four months before this police raid had left one hundred and thirty people dead. a french citizen born in brussels in september one thousand nine hundred eighty nine his current trial is focused on the shootout that led to his capture but the real focus of investigators is whether he played a major role in planning and executing the attacks or was he merely a low level follower. to learn more we spoke with a former member of the french secret service klugman he had spent decades

researching terror networks between europe and the middle east and he says the evidence is clear. some time so that islam is a central figure and the only survivor not counting supporters in syria or iraq without up to slam they would have been no pirates attacks on the thirteenth of november or the brussels attacks of march twenty second. it was our dislike who brought the terrorists into the country in small groups who rented their hideouts and the vehicles that they used to want to kill even. the investigators worked intensely to locate up to salaam and he started making mistakes in the end he had almost nowhere left to hide. take by day the house searches interrogation research large scale surveillance operations all of that steadily reduce the circle of people that could trust him with. after his arrest of the slum

was taken to a maximum security prison near paris and since then he has said nothing his lawyer spend money. described as a small time criminal who's too stupid to plan a conspiracy in one interview by re says up does law has quote the intelligence of an empty ass tray. and obvious lumps family has also tried to reinforce this line of defense one of his brothers has up the salon lost his nerve and intentionally failed to set off the suicide vest he was wearing the terror experts say it's all part of a deliberate defense strategy. deaconess advice about that suicide vest which they say he didn't use today we know two important things that had too technical faults and that's why it didn't go off. when i have to slams computer there's an e-mail in which he complained about the equipment and demanded better stuff for the next time but the things you need
4:05 pm
a push in for him of all material he was involved from start to finish not someone who is fragmented or. isn't it because. observers expect. lawyers to do everything possible to cultivate the idea that he was just a small fish. the start of his trial marks the accused first public appearance and it could set the tone for how the trial against him for the paris attacks will unfold. and you have user teri schultz is covering a solid islams trial at the justice palace in brussels and can join her right now terry to talk to us a little bit about how the day unfolded in the court today. well for most of the morning obviously stuck to his refusal to speak he wouldn't even stand up when the judge asked him to confirm his identity that went on for several hours with his accomplice so he and i are answering all the questions then suddenly
4:06 pm
obviously on decided he needed to say something and he stood up and said you know just because i'm being silent doesn't mean i'm guilty he said muslims never get the presumption of innocence so do not judge me now and he told the judge i'm not afraid of you i put my trust in allah so suddenly he has broken his almost two years of silence but that's not yet cooperation ok that's not yet cooperation terry so with him continuing not to really say much will this trial shed light on his motivations what led him to do what he's being accused of. that's very much the hope certainly victims organizations along with investigators were hoping that sala obviously would show some remorse that he at least would provide some understanding of how this terror cell here in brussels planned the attacks and why and of course here in belgium they're very much looking for clues on what happened later the brussels attacks of march that followed the paris attacks but we've had no such information out of of the slum who was in the courtroom or where their

family members of victims. there were representatives of victims' organizations along with defense attorneys a lot of journalists and some of the representative of victims organizations were quite upset by this outburst that i told you about because they said he's not helping at all with the investigation is not good shedding any light on this terror cell or what happened to our loved ones and yet he was allowed to use the courtroom as a platform for his views the other person who was upset by this was obvious lums defense attorney because of course if you have an articulate and opinionated of the slum that doesn't match the defense's portrayal of him as an idiot who couldn't possibly courtenay to tax time right now you mentioned already in your reporting that of the some criticized the court saying it is biased against muslims how is this trial being perceived by the local muslim community in belgium or in brussels specifically do they think it will be a fair trial where he was even more expensive than just blaming the court he
4:08 pm
was speaking in general that muslims are not given the presumption of innocence and i think that the muslim community in belgium has suffered a lot of stigmatisation because of up to slum of course at the same time it also harbored him he was found with relatives back in his home district of mulden back so i think that you have people who are very much worried about what this trial what this entire you know terror investigation paris and brussels says about their community at the same time they may also be feeling some sort of empathy we're not sure this is the first day of the trial back in brussels and everybody's emotions are high all right teri schultz reporting on the first day of slopped islam trial at the justice palace in brussels thank you for your continued coverage. now to syria where the british based syrian observatory for human rights says twenty three civilians have been killed in airstrikes on rebel held areas in damascus the bombing comes after activists accused government forces of

points and including labor law and health care that need to be resolved and to talk more about this we're now joined by degrees political correspondent linda crane she's following the talks for us melinda is the finish line in sight. well sort of . there had to been thought that the talks would finish this evening but we're hearing a number of voices saying that is quite probably not going to be the case the party leaders who are negotiating now in this stretch are due to give a statement around seven pm in about three hours from now so we'll know more at that time but we've heard from some sources that in fact the talks could go as far as into tomorrow early morning or possibly even longer some members of the party leadership have said they've postponed their flights out of berlin into the later
4:11 pm
stretches of tomorrow so so indeed still quite some time ahead all right willing to talk us through some of the most contentious issues that are impeding these talks from a successfully ending today. well as you mentioned basically two central areas one is health care and the other one is labor law so on health care the s.p.d. the social democrats have been pushing very hard for gestures that would represent perhaps the beginning of the end of what they call a two class medical system that means they would like to see a clear effort to put those who are insured by public insurers on a par with the germans who have private health insurance what that would mean for example is that the fees that doctors could charge to both kinds of patients would perhaps be equalized that would represent a very large cost burden for
4:12 pm
a number of the public insurers which is one reason that the conservatives have been opposing that sort of step we don't know for sure where things stand it's a very contentious issue but the s.p.d. has made it clear they need at least some symbolic movement on this move away from two party and two time limited temporary work contracts unless there's a very clear reason for them to be limited in time again something the chancellor had said she's not willing to accept so tough negotiations there as well and very briefly if i may melinda what happens after these negotiations and well the agreements that they've come up with will then be presented to the public possibly tomorrow morning possibly later on tomorrow whenever the talks to finish following that though it then goes to a vote among the entire membership of the s.p.d. the social democratic party that is a real sticking point it is possible that they will turn down the hard work that the negotiations have been accomplished then we're back at square one all right

let's hope that doesn't do go used to political correspondent in the korean thank you very much for your continued coverage. all right now to philadelphia because the philadelphia eagles have finally set their underdog status to win their first ever super bowl a forty one thirty three victory against long time favorites the new england patriots and a trophy drought stretching back almost six decades while that win triggered scenes of high emotion in philadelphia as thousands of fans packed the city center to celebrate. the white is. i philadelphia finally has a super bowl after years in the shadows eagles fans are rightly making the most of the historic victory over the new england patriots. they may have been the underdogs but the eagles went on the offensive right from the start they have bowled an adventurous game plan led by quarterback nick foles paid off tom brady
