this is the. nation we choose for signs of a new government here in germany conservatives are pushing for a coalition deal that could keep them in power alongside germany's social democrats led by martin schultz after eleven days of negotiations could be the one also coming up an earthquake in taiwan kills at least two people and injures many more

we'll get the latest on the rescue operation that's currently underway and there was a david versus goliath clash of the german cup with byron munich facing off against third division potter born could the underdogs sneak an upset result. it's good to have you with the will they won't they relationship at the heart of germany's political deadlock appears to be edging towards consummation. conservatives are thrashing out the last details of a coalition deal with the social democrats led by martin shoals it's a marriage four months in the making since voters left the chancellor at the altar waiting on a new partner and who are fourth term. at

c.d.u. party headquarters in berlin reporters wait for information on the progress of talks to form a grand coalition one hundred thirty four days after germany's general election the country is still without a government. updates from the parties have been few and far between. believe me when we can so we live in turbulent times what people want from the mainstream policies the conservatives on social democrats is that we form a reliable government if it gets off the population it will be for this people. even under mounting pressure the leader of the center left s.p.d. is full of confidence. so i have good reason to think we're in the final stretch i'm hoping for a positive spirit to the talks and a good result for our country in this rules are law. and the leader of chancellor merkel's more conservative sister party the c.s.u.
10:03 pm
from the state of bavaria sounded more upbeat than earlier in the day elizabeth before. everyone has to get out of the trenches digging in our heels won't work anymore the moment of truth is upon us. but the wait goes on in the meantime the coalition partners in waiting are hashing out their differences over health care reform and labor laws hopes are high that this will be the last night of suspense and that a new grand coalition government is within sight and one of those reporters waiting outside the c.d.u. headquarters here in berlin is our chief political correspondent more with a grain good evening to you melinda so what are you hearing we are quickly approaching the well the midnight hour. i think that midnight hour maybe stretched into the early morning or even slightly later morning hours
10:04 pm
we're seeing a lot of coming and going here for the past hour or so at c.d.u. headquarters and those who were going told us that they will be coming back they are essentially now on call and we've heard from some of those who are arriving that in fact headway is being made there definitely is forward movement we were told that the s.p.d. is highly motivated and is definitely all in on completing these talks but we also were told by at least one person who was crossing the threshold now just before ten pm that it could be a very long night indeed so we're told there they're going to get there but it's still going to take some time yeah i mean we've heard that many times before that is for sure and of course once there is an agreement on the table the battle is not over yet is it. no indeed it is not the s.p.d. the social democrats who are very very reluctant to enter into these coalition
10:05 pm
negotiations at all they have agreed to put any agreement that is reached here this evening to a vote by their entire party membership now that party membership has swelled in recent weeks swelled very considerably and many of those new members in fact have joined partly to vote no on the ground coalition the youth wing of the social democratic party has been leading a campaign vote no to the grow co grow co stance in german for the grand coalition and many i think of those new members may indeed be very much motivated to do just that so the fact is that indeed there may be an agreement here this evening but it still will hinge on that very crucial vote that could take up to three weeks so there could be going to prolonged period of suspense still yeah and in the base of the social democrats it could change the outcome here and does that
10:06 pm
does that reflect the mood of german voters are they basically are they fed up with the coalition parties dragging this out so well. i don't think it's that the coalition parties strike this out the fact is they've only been negotiating formally now for eleven days and they've actually achieved a pretty astonishing amount in that window of time that the coalition document that was leaked here to the press today is one hundred sixty seven pages long it has fourteen chapters and it has a very wide span but that the almost five months that we have essentially seen political limbo here in berlin has more to do with the fact that three of germany's smaller parties tried to negotiate with the chancellor's debt conservatives to form what was called age a make a coalition is so titled because of the party's colors and didn't succeed and the fact is i think there's
10:07 pm
a general frustration which we can see in polls at the moment that many people feel that the politicians perhaps it's the same old faces it's business as usual and that they are not taking seriously the very real challenges that confront this country so there is a certain level of frustration and a majority of germans is not enthused about the prospect of yet another grand coalition our chief political correspondent and a current of the story for us tonight belinda we will be checking in with you a little bit later and of course if news comes that an agreement has been reached we will go to you for that as well melinda thank you at least two people have been killed to hand over a hundred more injured in an earthquake in taiwan the tremor brought down her tell trapping many people inside the magnitude six point four earthquake struck just before midnight local time it's epicenter was just north of a city on the country's eastern coastline teams are briskly workers are entering

the damaged buildings hoping to free those who are still trapped on the cultural. ari for more now we want to go to correspondent ross fine gold in taipei ross good evening to you this earthquake struck in the middle of the night tell us about the damage that it's done well there's two main forms of damage following this earthquake wind is several buildings have partially collapsed near the epicenter around quali and city which is on the eastern coast of taiwan as you mentioned and secondly there are a lot of roadways which have had rockslides and this began with an earlier arthur quake on sunday night followed by a series of aftershocks although media reports here in taiwan from the government quoting the government official saying that tonight's earthquake was not an aftershock it was in fact a new earth way and that worse in the landslides in the rock slides and that's
10:09 pm
making some of the roads difficult to pass for first responders and emergency vehicles once how well prepared are taiwan's authorities for a quake like this. well taiwan does sit in the earthquake zone here in the pacific so earthquakes are very common including large earthquakes two years ago to the day on february sixth twenty sixteen there was a very serious earthquake on the western side of taiwan island which killed nearly a hundred people so the authorities here are very prepared but they do face the challenge of getting to the disaster zone in this case which is again impossible in some places because of the rockslides and actually areas near the epicenter are fairly mountainous or rural so it's now getting close to daybreak here in taipei taiwan and i think we'll get a better picture of the actual damage especially in the rural areas as the sun

comes comes up in authorities can access more areas right now the rescue efforts and the focuses predominantly have been in the downtown quali an area and what about the possibility of aftershocks well again the first large quake in. absolutely we lost our signal there ross yeah we apologize for that was russ feingold there reporting from taipei on that quake that hit try one just a couple of hours ago. all right here's some of the other stories now that are making headlines around the world a british court has rejected an attempt by wiki leaks founder julian assange to invalidate in arrest warrant against him the warrant stemmed from a sexual assault case in sweden that has since been dropped now boarding the
