this says you don't need to use live from berlin a united front from germany's would be a new government uncle america's conservatives and now it's their deal to form a new coalition with the social democrats it's a breakthrough after months of uncertainty in germany but at what cost. thanks very much for your company everyone well after marathon talks germany's
6:01 pm
biggest political parties have announced an agreement to form a coalition government tells the anglo-american hailed the deal her conservative struck with the social democrats as the foundation for good government while social democrat leader martin schultz said the pact would bring fundamental change for both germany and europe all right let's hear what chancellor merkel said the breakthrough means for germany. those who only fund google programs i know millions of citizens have been scrutinizing the negotiations. they have to justifiable requirements of us. just doesn't and second to remember the needs and the desires of the people. and you bill clinton but the officer. dimension i am convinced remains both parties reached can do just ask the the foundation of the good and stable government that whole country me and

the world expects of us all this of our destruction we had a strong influence on the agreement that we're thankful that some compromises that were hard to get by the union parties could eventually find agreement we're doing politics for the workers of this country we want permanent employment contracts to be the norm again the practice of giving out temporary contracts for no good reason will be strictly limited we've made sure there will be more equality in the health care system. that the solidarity tax will be abolished for employees with low and medium incomes. these things will make life easier for many people right away. oh our chief. political correspondent linda crane is standing by inside the bundestag she has been following these talks over the past week melinda you were in the room when they were addressing their press that they mean what they said or
6:03 pm
were they putting on a brave face. i think that they did certainly not everything that was agreed upon is something that the chancellor for example greets with joy and that was evident for example when she talked about the loss of the finance ministry which will now be held by the social democrats but on the whole i think she meant it when she said that she feels that this coalition agreement strikes the right balance between security and fairness for german citizens on the whether hand one hand and economic dynamism on the other and of course the former. two goals security and fairness those would typically be social democratic goals and indeed this coalition agreement does bear the imprint of social democratic concerns but you know what those concerns are not alien to this chancellor she is often criticised of having taken her conservative
6:04 pm
party in an increasingly social if not social democratic direction over the years that she has governed she is looking now at her last term in office that is for certain and i think it isn't surprising if she would actually view some of these social democratic measures as very much in line with her own inclinations so that's until america as for martin schulz you know what he wound up getting a lot more than one might have thought when the social democrats entered these negotiations if you remember they started out with a weak hand they did very poorly in september's elections then he said they wouldn't even be willing to talk about joining a grand coalition so it's quite surprising in the end to see how many issues they did wind up putting their imprint on and what ministries they wound up with and finally america's rather difficult bavarian partner the christian social union they
6:05 pm
too said they were very satisfied and i think we can take them at face value because they are getting a ministry they badly wanted to have all right so what have the reactions been from the christian democrats to this deal. well here the politicians left the christian democratic headquarters and came over here where they have now been presenting the results of the coalition agreement to their party groups and the christian democratic party group leader came out a short while ago and told us that he is very satisfied with the agreement as it stands and he had quite an interesting remark in that connection he said you know what germany is still one of the world's most powerful economies but the fact is we lag far behind if we look toward asia said that finally germany is ready to answer french president emmanuel mccall ready to take the helm with him and really steer the european union into do waters so two points on which he seems to be very
6:06 pm
satisfied with what was agreed upon political correspondent melinda crane reporting thank you. all right and let's take a look at how the negotiators may divvy out top ministerial parts i'm going to start which has she were roe remain at the helm of the government and martin shultz resigned from the as well as the leader of the social democrats that's been confirmed just right before we came on air and that he's slated to become germany's foreign minister and his party colleague schultz could take over the finance minister well this is just a tentative look at some of the potential candidates for ministerial posts here let's find out more about what this lineup means for germany and europe in general would you w. news is that political correspondent simon young gets out here with me some to shed some light on the americal will stay at the helm of the government she had to give
6:07 pm
up some prime real estate to secure this deal is she out of the out out of the woods yet well in terms of her leadership you know as melinda was saying there pretty much everyone is expecting to this is america's last term as johnson you know she is very weakened i would say this evening in the sense that you know she's had to give up make compromises on these key cabinet positions you know every time she sits down and brings that little bell at the weekly cabinet meetings to bring daughters she's going to be surrounded by social democrats in these key job finance foreign ministry and the labor ministry and so on so she's very aware of that also in policy of cool she's had to open up the the federal purposes it was for things like education and for the digital agenda and for europe have to say those of compromises it was easier for angle americal to make because frankly she's been pushing that part of her gender anyway i think in terms of the future she'll
6:08 pm
no be looking to her legacy and possibly some are saying you know she could be liberated too you know. do a little bit more in terms of policy than she's done over the last few years as melinda was also saying europe is going to be a key focus of this next government with germany being a much more kind of proactive and supportive player as far as many of the european partners are concerned so angle americal. weakened in the sense that she's taken a long time to put this government together it was very difficult her initial choice of coalition didn't work out now she's finally got over the line as it were and in a sense you could say this is where she wants to be as the moderating chancellor at the helm of a grand coalition not too much sort of political argument in the bundestag more of a sort of you know let's get round the table and just talk through it well let's talk about the other man of the hour as fiji leader all he's no longer the leader
6:09 pm
but used to be martin short of a hard bargain and now he's slated to become potentially the foreign minister a good choice well i think that might be the right choice for him good choice from his perspective so does he of course is also very much a weakened figure through all this because you know he hasn't really looked good he struggled and don't forget the s.p.d. membership still holds a sword of damocles over the face of this new government released over the deal they're going to get their chance to vote all four hundred sixty thousand of them and a couple weeks time but assuming it goes through assuming not insurance becomes foreign minister that looks like the right job for him in the sense that it takes him away from this question of can he really need to the social democrat party it's pretty obvious that many within that party don't believe he can it plays to his core strengths is the former president of the european parliament he knows
6:10 pm
a lot of international figures he'll be a welcome german foreign minister of course if he brings money bearing gifts as it seems likely on the. program as it's been set out so far so i think it's it's good for martin shields but certainly he's moving out of the limelight in the broad in the broad sense aren't just very briefly all of schultz. kind of a dark horse in terms for international viewers we don't really know him who is a very brief he's an interesting figure seven uses the mayor of hamburg criticized a lot there for his handling of the policing around the g. twenty summit you'll remember. but he's been somebody who's been on the fringes of government before for instance serving as a labor minister in a previous angela merkel government in fact and some are saying he could be tipped to be a future social democrat jones to the so most of the do a little bit like angela merkel herself actually an ideal choice for finance minister aren't political correspondent andrea thank you. i want to talk now about
