visagie w. news live from berlin south korea officially kicks off the two thousand and eighteen winter olympics you're seeing pictures here of the olympic stadium and kyung chang with the opening ceremony like the night but not everyone is in the mood to celebrate a final ruling bars dozens of russian athletes from the competition. this olympics brings the first ever visit to south korea by a member of the north's ruling dynasty kim jong un sister what is behind her diplomatic dance across the border. a race against time after beers are falling
1:01 pm
hard for the slopes of the all time mountains in northwest china are off the beaten track and tourists are now flocking to the land worst skiing may have begun. i'm swimming so what's going to good to have you with us the opening ceremony of the twenty third winter olympics has started in south korea fireworks went off over kyung chang as the gala event began nearly three thousand athletes from ninety two countries will be entering the sold out stadium over the coming hours of the games have had to overcome multiple hurdles ahead of winter sports most prestigious event the i.o.c. and the athletes will be looking to put all their troubles behind them and kick off the olympics with a bang. and we have a jonathan crane a from good abuse for it's with us for more on this story hi jonathan. opening ceremonies are usually pretty pretty spectacular how have these
1:02 pm
gone so far it's been is visually impressive as we were hoping for i think as you say that or spectacular started off with a fireworks display which is somewhat unusual it's kind of been an opening ceremony in reverse because then we had a bit of a show. show also with some symbolism five children joining a giant white tiger on stage in a real tiger obviously a puppet on the quest for peace and peace is playing a big role in these games and then the countries came out in korea in alphabetical order so that nigeria was one of the first countries on the nigeria is very interesting because they're being represented for the first time by the slates even if it's the first ever boats they team from africa to compete in the winter olympics honestly africa's really have the climate suits winter sports speaking of climate we've made a lot of the weather as well not as cold as people were paps fearing people worried that it would get down to minus twenty inside the stadium of course the stadium
1:03 pm
doesn't have a roof so they were handing out blankets and and seat warmers and things like that it's a nice and warm minus five inside the stadium i don't envy the people right now of the games the sports themselves haven't started yet but one of the big story with a big story in the lead up to these games as well has been the question of whether russia would participate now one hundred sixty nine a russian athletes are going to compete under the olympic flag but there were other athletes who were banned by the i.o.c. who then repealing their cases and we have a verdict today from the court of arbitration for sport especially the pills of forty seven russian athletes and coaches against their exclusion from the games now this is a victory really for the i.o.c. because i see has been under a lot of pressure over its decision to let some russian athletes in clean russian athletes these ones some of them have had their cases actually overturned by the court of arbitration for sport just last week benz. eradicated this actually once
1:04 pm
even bad for pigs in the case from the russian side was that why on the i.o.c. inviting these athletes if they haven't served the i.o.c. has maintained all along we reserve the right to invite who we want to see these games and that cas is now scientists with the and it's nice on the committee my so that was the big story a leading up to the games there have been a few events that have actually already started yes that's right they basically kind of fit every single event in see whether games between the opening ceremony in the closing ceremonies there we've seen a few qualifying events we've seen some ice skating and now patrick chan is one of the big names in ice skating we can see him in action that he represents kind of he won two silver medals in sochi four years ago he's a three time world champion as you can see that sometimes it happens to the best of them it was sleeping on his court super tired and that's a bit of bluster really for someone like patrick chan it was a very patchy stance for him this is in the team event but thankfully he was
1:05 pm
supported by some of his teammates who have pulled up kind of the score so they are still one of the favorites in this competition probably just warming up there all right well jonathan crane from the sports i thank you very much for bringing us the very latest from the olympics on day one thank you well these games also have an historic political aspect a high level government delegation from north korea is attending the opening ceremonies officials from pyongyang include kim jong the sister of north korean leader kim jong il and she is the first member of the north's ruling dynasty a dynasty to visit the south officially the two countries are still at war but these olympics appear to have started to thaw in relations at the opening ceremony athletes from the two countries walked side by side under a unity flag. and correspondent jason strother isn't going knowing outside of pyong chang for us hi jason how is that kim jong as agenda going so far. oh
1:06 pm
i mean the images being splashed around south korean media is president moon jay and shaking hands with her absolutely unprecedented this is the first time that a member of the ruling north korean kim family has called below the thirty eighth parallel certainly a momentous occasion here a momentous occasion chasten but what do you think this diplomatic show means why is that so important. we have to remember that north and south korea are still technically at a state of war and last year the tensions were very high here on the peninsula though mostly the rhetoric was between washington and pyongyang in seoul was more or less stuck in between but soon as soon as north korean ruler kim jong un announced his intentions to send athletes to the games here there has been a reprieve in the tension in the tensions and president moon j.n. has done all he could to accommodate the north koreans and make sure that they
1:07 pm
participate as best as they can here in. with so much media attention being given to the north korean delegation jason are the hosts of these games concerned that the athletic competition will be overshadowed. there's always the concern in the olympics that politics take the first take the gold medal let's say over the sports and already there are some headlines here president vice president mike pence did not stay very long at a. dinner hosted by president moon earlier today so he did not meet with any of the north korean delegation there had been some speculation that he would have a talk with the north korean. figures that have arrived here but that has not happened there will be more talks over this weekend back in seoul but for now. certainly with north korea involved in these games it's going to be hard not to
1:08 pm
discuss politics going alongside of these games correspondent jason strother reporting for us ed just outside of chang thank you very much jason thank you moving on to some other news now in search operations have carried on for a third day following an earthquake in taiwan the death toll has risen to twelve and more than two hundred fifty people have been injured right now crews are working to locate any remaining survivors. fighting against gravity and racing against time. rescue workers and while en city desperately search for anyone holding on to life in the collapsed buildings and the aftershocks just keep coming more than two hundred since the powerful quake hit just before midnight on tuesday rescuers have pushed through each night to find and free people. excitement among firefighters as residents of this building reach out the windows
1:09 pm
for help but signs of life are becoming less clear as each day dawns. we can say a rescue dog seemed to recognize possible signs of someone moving but the dog didn't bark so we can't absolutely be sure whether or not there are people in there but that was promising. the ongoing tremors threaten the safety of rescuers inside the damaged buildings and authorities fear at any moment they could fall completely. we must demolish these dangerous buildings right now what we don't want if there were to be another earthquake they would cause irreversible damage all around. machinery tears apart buildings believed to be empty and the death toll rises as firefighters elsewhere dig deeper into the rubble the island is prone to earthquakes and the only chance the taiwanese may have of avoiding more devastation is investing in better buildings
1:10 pm
the government says their focus now is just that. now to some other stories making news around the world a brief the u.s. government shutdown is set to end after the house of representatives passed a bill to fund the federal government through march twenty third the senate passed a few hours earlier the bill also increases overall spending limits over two years president obama trump is expected to sign the bill into law. activists say airstrikes in syria's eastern hotel near the capital damascus have killed over two hundred people in the past four days the bloodshed has led the united nations to call for an urgent ceasefire to evacuate civilians and deliver humanitarian aid the reuters news agency says an investigation into the massacre of ten row hendra men by man maher soldiers led to the detention of two of its reporters while alone and who are awaiting trial on charges of illegal possession of state secrets while
1:11 pm
reporting on the ongoing war hendra crisis and a seven of the tent tourists arrested for pornographic dancing in cambodia have been released on bail they were arrested in january after photographs emerged of people imitating sex acts at a party those out on bail cannot leave cambodia their passports have been confiscated. you're watching d.w. news still to come the presidential election in russia is fast approaching is it a done deal for putin we take a look at the other candidates. but first there's been now more trouble on wall street shares have dropped dramatically again their hearts that's true some of the dow plunged more than four percent last night combined with monday's losses it is down more than ten percent from its all time high last month of simply putting the market into correction asian markets followed shanghai closed four percent in the red the sharpest drop in the region by the european markets only modestly lower let's cross over to mark
1:12 pm
a correspondent in frankfurt done down there from third in the other europe european markets while it seemed to be shrugging it all off why's that. well gephardt i mean i really have to tell you that even though we are not hit as hard as for example yesterday on wall street investors really need some strong nerves here is what i can guess you can see it very well in the back on volatility is a big topic we are growing up and down it's really a roller coaster here at the moment but it really seems to be the case that investors here are on my and are thinking a little bit more realistic again then no we are not going to face a recession even though we might see interest rate hikes coming up in the united states still we are on a very solid and also strong economy level. danny what can we expect next week is the volatility going to continue. well certainly
1:13 pm
a more volatility year investors are very sure about that but there's also lots on the agenda and next we will be getting a retail numbers from the united states those numbers are always a very good indication of how the economy is doing in the united states also reports from the industry production and here on wednesday all the eyes will be again on the g.d.p. numbers will be getting g.d.p. figures for germany but also for europe as well it's going to be very interesting to see if we'll see another record concerning the g.d.p. figures as we have seen them last time. everyone is talking about the market correction where does a market correction stand on the richter scale of financial troubles. we actually when we talk about a market correction this means a correction off at least ten per cent correction by many is actually considered as healthy it even gets more dangerous at
1:14 pm
a higher level after twenty or thirty percent when what we're really talking about a crash. in frankfurt thank you very much. but coming to our next story that is the other than in europe markets in asia went into emergency mode and picked up wall street sentiment all major indices suffered heavy losses many blamed on tonight's computer trading but that's not the full story volatility seems to be the buzzword we'll be hearing a lot in the next months after the global market rout earlier this week investors were warned of increased and more frequent volatility in the next weeks and that's what they're getting as seen by the dow's plunge on thursday some analysts say that algorithm based trading in preprogram sell orders are to blame others point to market based indicators first u.s.
1:15 pm
investors fretted over a potential rise in borrowing costs as inflation picks up on increasing wages and they were anxious over the government shutdown some investors are taking a longer more sanguine view bracing themselves for short term discomfort or in one of these environments right now what do people have to realize the stock market and the economy are two different things and the technicals of the stock market are going to fight the fundamentals of an improving economy maybe for the rest of this month asian markets have followed u.s. stocks deep into negative territory chinese stocks are on track for their worst day in almost two years and analysts have a similar outlook as to how long it will last also given the seasonal factor. so it would take some time of course the middle of february new year holiday and everybody will go to their homes to celebrate the new year and. to him come back
1:16 pm
and maybe. so. he march. forget about the stock market in february just go home and relax and improving global economy and little sign of an impending recession mean that a bear market or a sustained sell off isn't expected and corrections can be considered healthy but that health can falter if investors stay spooked by market swings. u.s. magazine folds has published the first list of crypto millionaire that is a ranking of the richest people in digital currency like bitcoin behind me at the top is chris larsen founder of the block chain network report he's worth an estimated eight billion dollars also on the list cameron and tyler wink of course twin brothers who famously food it with facebook founder mark zuckerberg and later founder of the digital currency exchange forbes calculations though were made on january nineteenth that's important to remember given the recent volatility and
1:17 pm
plunge of digital currencies like bitcoin. now the days of slavery in europe are long gone at least that's what hugh and i believe but modern day slavery is a growing problem especially it seems in britain where cases of force servitude are on the rise police have combed arrested three men on suspicion of enslaving migrants. behind a seemingly ordinary field like very dark practices police a found some two hundred migrant workers suspected of being held in slavery at this flower picking farm in cornwall in southern england. most come from mostly near rumania and bulgaria they're now being interviewed by police are making sure everybody is being treated properly and he will need to saw assistance on site or off the site they're making that happen for them together with the council and all the other agencies on also we've got searches going on for offenses three men are
1:18 pm
in custody on suspicion of slavery offenses under modern day slavery people are forced to work long hours for little or no pay off and under threat of violence at least thirteen thousand people are believed to be victims of various forms of forced labor in britain. russia will hold elections next month so me as i think about that's right there have been russians now registered on the eight candidates who will challenge fundament putin in that presidential vote that might sound like the premise for a hotly contested competition but with put his approval rating at around eighty percent and one of his biggest rivals alexina volley barred from running he is expected to stroll to victory did i only sure when reports. an ice cold start to election year for vladimir putin this russian orthodox ritual symbolizes rebirth a reinvigorated putin is vying for his fourth term as russian president current
1:19 pm
polls show the odds are on his side. so who are the top three candidates taking on the president. is new on the political scene but some surveys show him polling second to putin already is a local politician and a successful businessman who runs the collective lenin state farm near moscow. is the first new candidate russia's communist party has put forward in fourteen years his ideas could have a populist appeal. but i see here is money in russia but some people are buying huge while the government doesn't have money to build school toilets i can tell you that is money it just needs to be put back into the country and invested in the welfare of our citizens who want to grow and grow again in doesn't shy away from criticizing the author already even on state t.v. hot on his heels is. he's a household name in russian politics. in the last presidential elections
1:20 pm
a campaign video showed him whipping a lazy donkey supposed to symbolize russia into moving forward. right. saying yes upchuck is another fresh face in the elections though she's currently only polling at around one percent her platform if you're sick of all the other candidates then vote for me. sub chuck started out as a socialite and a reality t.v. star before becoming a well known opposition journalist she's a fierce government critic and argues that the annexation of crimea was illegal. i want another kind of russia with the best scientists best people who do their work best innovations european russia this is very important for me because i consider russia to be europe checks opponents say she is actually
1:21 pm
a kremlin pawn to legitimize the vote they point to her close family ties with pollution. though these three candidates may be livening up the political debate in russia public support for them is moderate. even with some newcomers on the scene there is hardly a doubt that vladimir putin will win the upcoming presidential elections the latest opinion polls show him taking nearly seventy percent of the vote now the president just needs to make sure that as many people as possible actually turn out to cast their ballot. turning out to the mountains along china's border with kazakhstan and mongolia originals people may have been the first to ever strap on a pair of skis it's not just the wintertime thrill their skiing is a necessary skill to get around tourists are increasingly flocking to the all tight area to get some lessons from the locals. turns and northwest china are off the beaten track this is the kind of place where you might
