leadership and now says intention to take the post off foreign minister but that ambition grew strong criticism from s.p.d. members who must ratify the coalition deal in a vote. shoot himself said he had made the decision to ensure the success of that vote here's what he said i will not be taking up the post in the german government i sincerely hope this will end the debate within the s.p.d. about who does what we are all in politics for the people of this country that means my buzz the ambitions must come second to the interests of the party. so those were comments by martin schulz for the latest twist in this political drama in germany let's go to our correspondent thomas sparrow tell us after all that hard work on the coalition agreement now this how surprising is this development it is indeed a political drama those who believed that germany's political uncertainty after

months and months of negotiations had come to an end with the coalition deal only a few days ago was certainly surprised today by the announcement of martin shows and the big question is why that announcement was made why this news is now so important in the house to do with the turnover political debate within the social democrats it's seeing to that debate about personnel about who would be doing what in the new government overshadowed the debate about content about the actual coalition deal and what the social democrats would gain in that coalition deal and doc is probably the reason why martin schultz had to announce today that he would not be taking up that post as the foreign minister and this is particularly painful for martin shoals of return because just imagine one year ago he had been elected by one hundred percent of s.p.d.
6:04 pm
delegates to become the new party's leader to become that beacon of hope for the s.p.d. and after that the party in the last three regional elections the party had a terrible result of the federal election he then lost the party leadership and now he was also forced to announce that he would not become the next foreign minister so a very bad for martin short and a very difficult moment for the german the social democrats here in germany not much insurance announcement came a day off the current acting foreign minister a signal also from the s.p.d. had this to say he said it is sad to see the lack of respect we now have for each other in the s.p.d. and how little a previously made promise now means that quite clearly got bill is very unhappy with what is actually seeing having promised the post of foreign minister in a new government. those details remain unclear but it's just important to stress
6:05 pm
that these comments by gabriele and also what has happened today to to mr schultz just show the internal divisions of the s.p.d. after the coalition deal was signed in fact many had said that the s.p.d. had managed to get a good deal out of it they got three key ministries out of that coalition deal foreign ministry finance ministry and labor ministry but it was obviously the case that within the s.p.d. there was a very interesting and a very delicate debate as well about personnel and also about what would happen with different positions in the future government and that will also explains why we're seeing these developments now whereas some s.p.d. members have come out for example on social media saying that they would still like sigma gabriele to remain foreign minister because he's after all one of germany's most popular politicians other politicians other s.p.d. members have said well now after mr shows his decision it's time for the s.p.d. to talk about content and they will only start talking about personnel after the

very important vote by the entire s.p.d. membership four hundred sixty three thousand people who will decide if that coalition deal goes in fact ahead they are the ones that have to give the green light to this coalition deal before it can actually come into fruition before it can actually happen and i don't know what impact you think should says announcement will have on that s.p.d. vote on the coalition government next month briefly if you can please. well what he said is that his announcement is precisely was precisely made to avoid a certain impact to ensure that there could be a yes vote but it clearly stresses again the divisions within the s.p.d. and it is still unclear what will actually happen in dire vote all eyes are now on the s.p.d.m. return right thomas spiral out of parliament you see it is thank you very much for that. turning now to south korea where the twenty third winter olympics have
6:07 pm
officially opened with an extravagant many in pyongyang child present in declared the two thousand and eighteen winter games open with fireworks going off all come charm nearly three thousand athletes from ninety two countries marched into the packed stadium for the opening ceremony the games have had to overcome multiple hurdles ahead of winter sports most prestigious event the i.o.c. and athletes will be looking to put all their troubles behind them and focus on the sport in the coming days ahead. meanwhile the court of arbitration for sport has turned down an appeal by forty seven russian athletes and coaches to compete at the games the russians had been banned from taking part by the international olympic committee over state sponsored duping in sochi four years ago they'd argued they'd been wrongly excluded from the games but the court of arbitration for sport said the i.o.c. this decision was not unfair nor discriminatory. now these games also have

a historic political aspect a high level government delegation from north korea attending the opening ceremonies officials included in your job the sister of north korean leader kim jong un she's the first member of the north really didn't study to visit the south officially the two countries are still at war but these olympics appear to have started a foreign relations the opening ceremony athletes from the two countries walked side by side under a unity flag. and let me join our correspondent jason strother he is in a gun in south korea jason to what extent is the presence of kim jong dominating events there. well it certainly made some amazing photo opportunities and we see the shots of president moon jayenge shaking her hands says she was there in the v.i.p.

box as president as president moon prime minister shinzo ave. as well as vice president mike pence all watched the opening ceremonies it's certainly a big deal and the lead of this lead the delegation from the u.s. which was headed by vice president mike pence well think diplomatic hope what now if well the media here is more or less saying vice president pence snow the north korean delegation even before the opening ceremony there was a dinner reception hosted by president moon and reports say that vice president penn's pretty much showed up and said hi to some people and avoided the north korean delegation before leaving so certainly in a leading up to the olympics north korea had said it had no interest in talking with the americans vice president and also was not entirely clear if that was on his agenda so maybe we can't be too surprised that there was i see the first

meeting between the two sides and jason one of the people away you are how south koreans reacting to north korea's participation in the games. you know there had been some apathy leading up to the olympics had there even be been some anger about the united korean women's ice hockey team that's being fielded during these games but you know it's hard to argue with the images that we saw coming from the opening ceremony the athletes. the athletes from north and south korea coming into the stadium together all dressed in their white long padded coats under the the united slag they looked so happy to be together it was a really festive occasion and perhaps that's going to rub off on the public. jason strother reporting there from south korea let me now bring you up to date with some

opponents in the u.k. have launched a campaign aimed to persuade britons that a second referendum on membership is needed campaigners argued they should be a final vote on the deal but brussels this time voters would know what a future outside the e.u. would actually look like but few people believe big city can be stopped at this stage his biggest mosse with the latest episode on a series road to bragg's it. stephen brady is determined. determined to stop. every day he said sub shop right opposite parliament he's taking time off work until he achieves his goal that the it's the lords every window is one of the lord's offices they. are not going to let them forget we're here with a new study suggests that some who voted for breakfast now regret their decision

that's extra motivation for stephen breyer and others like him should there be another vote for the people they're going to have an end goal they're going to see a charge of what they are actually voting for there has been a slight shift in public opinion and marginally more people would now vote to stay within the e.u. however the shift has not been dramatic enough to persuade many m.p.'s here in the house of parliament to actively campaign for a second referendum. it would be up to members of parliament to pass legislation for another referendum there are hobhouse is a liberal democrat m.p. her party is one of the smaller ones and they are campaigning to overturn bracks it the leadership of both big political parties are committed to what appears to be more and more hard and the people need to understand whether that is really what they want do they want to have the travel restrictions to work restrictions are there actually happy that our economy might go down the too many pro european

campaigns lobby online rather than in front of parliament they're often run by young people posting with hashtags like e.u. flag maffia and there are petitions to parliament too. but outside one of london's big universities feelings amongst the mostly empty breck's of students are mixed as to whether they would like to have another say. we've already made a decision and i think we might as well stick with something like that instead of changing our minds off what for i think a second chance is what we currently need so i think it would be really beneficial i was on the main side but i believe this we've already had one day by a second debate is just going to lead to more people asking for a. referendum and then that's never going to end even here in central london where the overwhelming majority voted to stay within the e.u. people are not too enthusiastic about another referendum and in mall bricks of
