one hundred kias over. starting february eighteenth. this is deja vu news live from her lead on the macro tells her credits are not going anywhere the german chancellor vows to stay on for a full term as head of government and party that is she faces a groundswell of disaffection from her own rank and file will have complete analysis also coming out of a showdown with jacob zuma his party needs to decide the fate of the embattled

south african president is he on his way out we'll ask our correspondent. and russian investigators searching the snow for clues as to why an airliner went down soon after taking off from a moscow airport killing all seventy one on board. and in sports a bit of braman rediscover their fighting form against a wolfsburg we'll have that and all the highlights of sunday's honestly. i'm brian thomas welcome to the show on the machall has promised to remain both chancellor and conservative party leader for another full term she used her first interview since clinching a deal for a new government to quassia rumors that she'd be stepping down early to make way for a new generation of leaders many in her party are not satisfied worth or will talk
8:02 am
about that after this report. the german chancellor stepping up to defend the coalition deal specifically the key foreign and finance ministries going to the social democrats it was the only way to stop the talks collapsing she says. i'm trying to control now as i also find it painful. i would like to have kept the finance ministry but it's what we decide as politically and in the coalition agreement and the finance minister cannot just do whatever he likes a message to merkel also addressed the question of staffing within her own party there have been growing calls to begin promoting a younger generation of c.d.u. talent to cabinet level posts. from i know that i naturally have to make sure that we keep in mind not just the over sixty's but also the younger people. my own message to the party conferences that we need to be clear about how we go forward into government get involved and to see to use ministerial line up should be clear
8:03 am
in two weeks' time merkel avoided talking about a successor saying she plans to remain as chancellor and party leader until twenty twenty one. law you think you have lost your authority. and i mean i'm finished so no i don't feel that because of course i do understand that the party will be thinking that i've been the chancellor for twelve years and clearly i can't be chancellor for another twelve years. on the other hand i had extensive discussions with the party before the election on whether it was right and desirable for me to come pain for another four years and i agreed that it was merkel's message to the party is clear i'm still in charge but i'm listening to my critics. but just how much is on the market listening to her critics to talk about that we're joined by our correspondent brady good morning kate. what does it look like will america stay on for the full term or might she leave earlier well considering the amount of
8:04 am
political upheaval that we've seen in germany right now there really is nothing to say that merkel will indeed a full term in office but we saw from the interview that she gave just last night that she really wants to show her all sorts in the party right now in the c.d.u. and show that she still has the ability to lead a stable party but also a stable government which still needs to be formed and of course we've seen muckle survive much more pressure than the space particularly since the september election a party walked away from those elections with the worst result in post-war history and yet she still here but of course the big issue for the c.d.u. right now in the coming years is. who is going to be a muckle successor so right now even if she works at bay the question is who would follow in her footsteps i mean that is the big question for her right now and that's part of the pressure that she's under the brewing rebellion in her party to
8:05 am
bring in new faces she's promised to do so would that satisfy her critics at this point well that would certainly satisfy the youth wing of the concept it's very keen to get a face is insecure have been up positions but one of the bigger which michael describes himself as pay a painful so concession was handed over to the finance ministry to the social democrats and that was quite a blow particularly to the more conservative wing of the c.d.u. so we can have a listen now to see what else some of the critics had to say. there's frustration in the rank and file i've been hearing that every day for the past three days nonstop to the sofa time long about the cabinet posts but many of my party are sent even depressed and disappointed and some are fairly angry into giving up the finance ministry was a political mistake and will go by and not go on like this we need
8:06 am
a renewal. ok anger depression a lot of intense emotions in the base right now could this lead to only machall being unseated. question who would she be unseated by if you compared the cd so the social democrats right now they too have a huge personnel debate going on in the party are expecting this week under the knowledge to actually replace martin schulz as policy leader of the option just isn't that right now in the say to you but of course these questions of personnel are really a side issue the main issue at hand right now is forming a government in germany and that could still be some hurdles to overcome that. there's two big hurdles both parties have to approve this coalition deal it's not done and dusted at all it's still an open process isn't exactly so you the delegates from the conservative policies i guess invite but the big upset could come from the social democrats as full hundred sixty thousand party members
8:07 am
eligible to vote on whether they want the social democrats to go into another grand coalition so we could still see the grand coalition full flatness face and then mccall really would be in tricky situation as then she'd be faced with either having to vote form a minority government which she's rejected on several occasions or we'd also have the possibility of snap elections in germany ok march fourth is the date when we'll know about this s.p.d. vote exact to approve the coalition deal we could still be looking at new elections where a minority government keep brady thanks very much. now for some of the other stories making the news at this hour a new ad states the city of new york has launched a lawsuit against hollywood mogul harvey weinstein and his company alleges he and his brother robert broke the law by failing to protect employees from pervasive sexual harassment intimidation and discrimination r.v.y.

office but so far zuma who's ignited public anger over numerous corruption allegations has refused to budge the crisis comes as the a.n.c. marks the one hundred thousand a verse free of the birth of nelson mandela. i'm up on. a man power and sunil and khosa was the anti apartheid rallying cry of the struggle led by nelson mandela born one hundred years ago. his resistance eventually delivered power into the hands of the a.n.c. but it is the transition of that power that is threatening to test south africa's ruling party apart the birthday celebrations were launched by the a.n.c. is a new leader cyril ramaphosa he's the rival in the a.n.c. of embattled president jacob zuma. after attending a church service a day ahead of the meeting rama poso spoke of transition but avoided questions about seumas fate.

party is proving a difficult goal to achieve in south africa. who needs universal unity is better me ok more we're joined now by did ever use southern africa correspondent christine monday morning for a stand on for the a.n.c. is national executive has called a meeting for today a lot to talk about and a decision about president zuma future is expected today right up to this point soraya has been the scene with jacob zuma and we had a stand that a lot of that has been about zuma insisting on making demands that he wants the states to keep paying his legal fees even when he steps down from office some of course has made it to him that if he's willing to into some kind of a piece of august or ten state witness he will can. it is that but not if he's going to take the route of appealing and appealing and appealing which effectively will cost of africans a lot of money and so we don't know if they reached an agreement on bet we are expecting that today they don't see any see will i that confirm some kind of an
8:12 am
agreement or deal that cyril has reached at zuma or take the step of recalling jacob zuma ok and what happens if zuma does not heed the and sees call for a step down what happens and he's well within his rights to do so the a.n.c. cannot remove the sitting president he has been sworn in by the constitution he can insist on staying that would force the a.n.c. to take the measures parliament where they would either have to impeach the president or table a motion of no confidence is there any way to tell what's going to happen is all up in the air and it's all up in the anybody's guess really is as good as mine essentially but a lot of people do think that they have reached a deadlock that zuma and so have not been able to to to come to an agreement that effectively the party is going to be forced to start off by initiating the recall see if he gets to that he still has the option to resign or be forced to take the medicine parliament ok cyril ramaphosa is the man who would become the new president for south africa should this process move forward in his favor what would
8:13 am
a presidency with rahm oppose of the head look like well one anti corruption and that's what some africans are excited about that sort of also has a very good brand and he's very closely associated with mandela's image so to say he was expected to take over mandela action things change the last minute he's since gone on into business he's becomes one of south africa's wealthiest men while respects that even when it was confirmed that he won the a.n.c. presidency in december the markets reacted in a positive way he's got a good brand a good image and so it's expected that he's going to want tamp down the corruption the people in the cabinet right now that it was zuma appointees that everybody is wondering why are they even having the positions that they have is expected to clean up cabinet he'll go to the state enterprises and make them viable again right now or else it into presence of africa. essentially beating money is expected that he'll go on there and temple of that and this various other national issues that people think so i'm opposed to is the person city carol is there's a sense that he can turn the economy around to gain the public support he needs is
8:14 am
the airing so if they're going to go for it definitely and that was the senate qadri and saw that it was a general election next year and that's what they've been assaulted the public that we have a new sheriff in town and that he knows the business community he speaks the language of investors i mean he's one of the efficacies richest men he knows how to negotiate this is the person who's going to bring investment back into the country create this much needed jobs he's a businessman he understands what entrepreneur is need and so people are really looking for which and that and we'll see much more of that we'll start hearing more of that when they see officially kicks off its campaign in the build up to the election has a lot of stake in today's meeting for south africa christine manuel thanks very much christine and. russian investigators are searching for clues as to exactly what brought down an airliner sunday outside moscow killing all seventy one people on board to saratov airlines regional jet disappeared from radar screens shortly after takeoff from an airport in the moscow area one flight recorder has been recovered but so far the cause of this crash remains unclear but should always mark
8:15 am
the aircraft came down on snow covered ground just outside moscow the saratov lines jet was carrying sixty five passengers and six crew emergency services rushed to the scene but the russian authorities late to confirm there were no survivors three children were among the dead one. the plane crash just a few minutes after takeoff from moscow's dhamma airport the flight was heading for the city of or sq some fifteen hundred kilometers to the southeast in the ural mountains near russia's border with kazakstan. most of the passengers are thought to have been from the region with or to say the pilots did not report any problems before the crash people living near the scene spoke of a massive impact witnesses saw the plane on its way down. near wishless market i was in the car with my husband we stopped when we saw this bright explosion in the

sky we couldn't tell what it was three of the crew but sure we saw something like a firework and then it fell and there was a big explosion from the. c.c.t.v. footage taken from a distance shows an apparent explosion an investigation into the cause of the crash is under way or thirty's of opened a criminal case looking into possible negligence the russian made aircraft is thought to have been around seven years old one of its black box recorders has been found. and i do so doesn't also fragment the step we found the plane is spread over a radius of at least a kilometer investigators say using the latest equipment to cover the territory they're using drones to get an aerial view of what they're cooped up. as emergency crews worked late into the night russian president vladimir putin travel plans to monitor the investigation. this is didn't you know still to come on the show braman

battle to avoid relegation one of the highlights of that game from sunday's. markets here right now in the markets are bracing themselves for what could be another turbulent week investigators or investors battling as well in order to regain some confidence obviously all eyes this morning are an asian markets to try . get a sense of whether this week is going to be as turbulent as last week was and it seems that confidence is returning the hang seng index has risen northpoint eight percent in afternoon trading that after having to dive to more than nine percent over the previous five trading days japanese markets are closed today due to a public holiday and the case losses marked its worst week in two years and the german dax to shed about ten percent over the last two weeks analysts however expect a swift recovery. so what's in store for us this week let's ask catherine young
8:18 am
investment director for equities at fidelity international in hong kong very good to have you with us catherine first of all i'd like to get your insides into what do you make of last week's market. lost me last week's market correction really was well you could say very much anticipated given that for the past couple of years we really have seen the markets just grinding higher and higher nothing goes in a linear fashion and what happened was resource and wage data coming out two fridays ago this sparked some volatility and then really last week the correction we saw was very much underpinned by what we call known fundamental investors so these are kind of high frequency ikhwan traders we saw the very popular risk parity product really seeing some selling and we could expect more selling from these kind
8:19 am
of investors especially given that so many people own so many equities at this point in time. you prefer to use the word correction rather than a mini crash while some people even talked about a bloodbath last week what we've seen last week does this point to any underlying problems with the u.s. economy perhaps. well that's the whole thing monica when we look at the world in terms of the economic health things are going pretty well whether it's in china or across asia europe you can argue and especially the united states and so what really triggered this kind of sell off was the fact that so many commentators and economists have inflation levels really quite benign or benign range and when wage growth came out stronger than expected there was concerns it would have to sort of reset expectations that the federal reserve would indeed increase interest rates a lot quicker or faster than expected i did want to highlight though that whilst we are seeing wage growth we could which could lead to further consumption don't
8:20 am
forget there's still a lot of debt burden in the u.s. and of course china holds a lot of that money i mean from the asian perspective to what extent do you think china sees the u.s. as a political or economic rival i want to call it arrived at this point in time but the chinese themselves very high up when president xi jinping is agenda is what we call the one belt one road strategy it's not just called belt road and this really is to recreate the silk road route both maritime as well as rail so the chinese themselves are funding a lot of projects whether it's across latin america whether it's in europe whether it's across asia and this really is china's ultimate way of increasing their soft power status right catherine young their investment director for equities delatour international in hong kong thank you so much for this. now a moment of truth hans up who is grabbing
