a deeply divided social democrats. plus in the next sixty minutes a korean american lights up the winter olympics in chung with a south korean grandmother watching kim blows away the competition on the still boarding house by a los wrong receives a deal will fix school. and the obama making history again this time with her shoe poor creates grease in the walls of washington's national portrait gallery. i know i'm done with achievement a very warm welcome to you we begin in south africa where the ruling a.n.c. party has confirmed it is still president jacob zuma to step down but party leaders have not yet agreed on a timeframe and zuma says he respond tomorrow he says. president have been mobbed
3:02 pm
by allegations of white scale corruption i talked to our correspondent in just a moment but first here's what the a.n.c. secretary general had to say in a statement a couple of hours ago. you were given time and space. to respond. we haven't given him an immediate line. to respond when we call or what do you expect over deployed to do what they're going to expect him to do so i don't know what will happen but let's leave it to president. for more i'm joined now in our studio by need obvious correspondent christine mano welcome christine so what i understand from the state of the secretary general of the a.n.c. is that zuma has certainly stepped down but it's not clear when how do you see this playing out it's not clear when and we are expecting bets tomorrow president jacob
3:03 pm
zuma will release a statement confirming that he is indeed to receive the message from the party that they that he's the record and we expect from that statement that there'll be some kind of an indication as to when he sees a fish leave office right now of the three to six months sort of timeframe has been targeted it's not come out of his own mouth we will know tomorrow via a statement other than to come out personally and say anything we wanted to our will get a good sense as to where he's going but i can imagine what's taking place right now is any you see members are essentially it is those that have here are pressing him to to go sooner rather than later only in c. president. talked about it talking about three to six months is what he wants before he steps down but the secretary also talked about the uncertainty of exactly is he a winning on the country due to this political developments how do you see this developing for syria grampa's a who's the man who's expected to take over from i mean and so was expected to come
3:04 pm
in as early as january this is when south africans thought that they would be seeing a new president nobody could have told you that it was going to drag out as long as it has but the more this this carries on the more jacob zuma insists on staying in office and not resigning immediately so to say it's looking bad on sorum of poso who right now is losing credibility because you have people wondering why is this person who spoke so brazenly about all that he's going to do and accomplish why is he seemingly so powerless and why i can't hear or see jacob zuma out of office and so in many ways jacob zuma refusing to go is also a disrespect towards sort of course undermining the mandate. he's been given by the a.n.c. to to now go over and take over from jacob zuma so while cyril has hinted at the fact one of the polls has him to the fact that he wants to have for jacob zuma the dignity that he thinks he deserves the more he does that the more the opposition for example is now running up the country to say look at this ineffective force of
3:05 pm
that you've got at the tool house surely the a.n.c. is an ineffective party that is run by single individual whose interests are not the interests of the country and what about the people of south africa are they getting impatient are they getting frustrated given of the country is facing many economic problems at this point and this is a country where we know that poorest of africans are getting even poorer the numbers are just are not in favor of that country the economics in terms of the unemployment and various other economic indicators and also has gone on to the message that he is going to come in and create jobs etc that people are frustrated at the level of corruption that has come out of the zuma administration they want to see the back of zuma some going as far as saying that from the state house to the prison cell is where a lot of the their friends want to see president jacob zuma and so the longer this takes and remember we are going up to an election in south africa in two thousand and nineteen the more credibility they see is losing the more voters are looking at this party as virtually ineffective and not willing to crush the things like open
3:06 pm
corruption that south africans feel has cost the city called me many jobs etc and of course and many a signal has to go but the system has to be dismantled christine linda thank you very much for that analysis. there's another look at some other stories making news around the want investigators say the crash of a russian passenger plane that killed all seventy one people on board may have been caused by pilot error after starting the recovered flight data recorder officials say the pilot's free to turn on the heating unit for the plane's pressure measurement equipment that led to instruments showing the wrong airspeed. the suspect in last year's truck attack in stockholm has pleaded guilty to terrorism matthew opening up his trial mother archelaus of earth says he wanted to punish sweden for fighting against the so-called islamic state the prosecution is calling for a life sentence the attack killed five people and injured fifteen others. in the pacific

island nation of tongueless dealing with the aftermath of tropical cyclone guitar which struck overnight it flattened the parliament building damaged homes and caused widespread flooding they are no immediate reports of serious injury or death due to the psych lone. ukrainian opposition leader mikhail saakashvili has warned corruption could tear the country apart if the e.u. and especially germany don't step in he was deported to poland last night after a heavily armed ukrainian border police stormed a kiev restaurant to detain him saakashvili a former president of georgia has described the move as a kidnapping ukraine says she'd been in the country illegally and was sent back to the country he arrived from he's now in the polish capital warsaw. dozens of mikheil saakashvili supporters braved the cold kiev night to protest against his deportation they were backing his call for president poroshenko to resign accusing
3:08 pm
him of corruption ukrainian government says saakashvili is trying to stage a russian sponsored coup but saakashvili his lawyer has called kearsarge an outrageous with a time when it's a kidnapping and now. the detention because a detention would be based on either a court decision or other documents and dispose of the case. this surveillance footage reportedly shows the moment border police arrested saakashvili for deportation saying he was an illegal resident in ukraine saakashvili had been a friend of president poroshenko arriving in ukraine as his advisor in twenty fourteen he renounced his georgian citizenship to become a ukrainian national and governor of the adesa region but the friendship turned sour saakashvili started criticizing polish and goes government launched a nationwide anti-corruption movement he was stripped of his ukrainian citizenship while abroad but in a public attempts to reclaim it he forced his way back across the ukrainian border
3:09 pm
in september flanked by his supporters. just last week a ukrainian court rejected his appeal to be given special protection against a possible extradition. and in his native georgia he is wanted for alleged abuse of office in january a court there sentence him in absentia to three years in prison now in poland he's vowing to fight on. with the kidnapping i love poland but might fight this in ukraine and georgia but i'll fight with him and saakashvili says he remains confident and he'll soon give a statement about his deportation. our correspondent nick connelly is in kiev up put it to him that saakashvili did not leave the country voluntarily judging by the pictures of his detention. get off number two well that's certainly the case i think ukrainian officials had to learn their lesson from a couple of months ago just focus on this they tried to detain him in
3:10 pm
a similar raid at his house just a couple of tens of meters behind me where i am here in the center of kiev back then there were those famous images that went around the world of sexually running across the roofs here delaying that arrest and allowing time for his supporters to come down here to downtown kiev and they eventually were able to then pull him from an unmarked police car so that time the ukrainian forces weren't able to spirit of the country in a hurry as they've been planning to this time it was all false and his supporters weren't able to get in the way he was on a private plane very quickly and i think there's no quits not a coincidence that given he was organizing big protests for this coming week and they wanted to make it happen in a hurry so why do the parties decide to move now and hostle saakashvili out of the country was it to do with the protests that he was planning as you just mentioned. this definitely that aspect coming that he's got this these protests that he's organizing he's been organizing protests or has to be said regularly of the past
3:11 pm
few months but he was aiming to get more people out on the streets this time around there it's important member here the formal reason for sending him out the country is his status his immigration status here in ukraine that he was stripped of his ukraine citizenship by present fortune last year while he was out of the country and had to force his way back from poland and ukraine so that's the formal one case running against him at the same time you also had a case running against him for as we mentioned of peace supposedly organizing why it's all intents and purposes a coup against the current government the fact that he's actually was sent out of the country while that case surrounding this supposed to plot was still running rather deep discredits that case in the seriousness of it i think also it's important that there are elections this country next year in about a year's time ukraine's will go to the polls and petro poroshenko has to deal with a lot of discontent over stagnating living standards the conflict of conflict and don't pass so there is a motivation here to get someone who has shown his ability to bring people out on
3:12 pm
the streets out of the country if that's possible. that is the course of an economy talking to me a short while ago from kiev here watching the news still to come it's a historic day for germany's social democrats the center left party looks set to elect a female leader for the first time and its hundred and fifty year existence. but first to business news with ben and trying to mean saying things or says cut some trade is interested oh very interested in there are lots of reasons amrita u.s. president donald trump has announced the taxes will be levied on companies from countries which impose customs duties on u.s. products trump was unclear which countries would be affected by the levy but he stated that he'll say more about the mutual tax this week trump also announced his four point four trillion dollars budget plan for the coming fiscal year and one half trillion dollar plan to modernize the ailing u.s.

infrastructure. that's the story of the buses falling forests in frankfurt we're talking about a huge cash injection here what traders saying about this all they. well it's of course the question whether it indeed will go through congress can quote troels the purse strings on the federal level but even if it does come through trump is talking about two hundred billion in federal money and the rest has to come from others one point three trillion from states local authorities perhaps private investors so in a way over ten years spread that's twenty billion dollars i think investors were looking for a bit more than that so it sounds like one of trump's classic real estate deals where his name's on the building but he hasn't coughed up any cash. it seems eerily so and of course the disadvantages and both cases if the project fails and if this fails then his name is on that too the question is whether the others will come on

board because the states for example an economist told me most have balanced budget obligations that is there's a limit to how much they can take on an additional spending i think many were looking for more money from washington and even if it does all get spent is one point five trillion. assumptions are based on an economy that is booming in the united states and will speed up even more and people say that's not the case we're seeing right now the strong doubts on not leaving perhaps a mountain of debt at the end serviceable but higher interest rates and today again no one likes those two words mountain and dance in the same sentence only person frank. looking to the future and very different retail infrastructures popping up across china forget the shopping experience or any human interaction these new stores of fully digitized. this in conspicuous structure

is actually a mini market located in a commercial district outside beijing it's fully automatic there's no staff. it's a market of the future. here customers use an app to access the store locate products and pay for them. there are five security cameras watching the store. if a customer a shoplifter tries to leave without paying a customer service center reminds them to pay. the store contains typical many market items snacks drinks and hygiene products customers come from nearby offices during their lunch break. each item is priced electronically purchases are completed with the payment app. i like shopping this way you know
3:16 pm
when watching you find what you need then paying no. being go box in beijing is just one of several start ups developing on step markets it operates some two hundred stores like this one they're all running smoothly so not all are theft rates are even lower than traditional supermarkets the last major is less than two point one percent. jaideep one of china's largest online retailers also runs supermarkets without employees they have a store in the company's offices that uses biometrics once you've registered on the app it's all automatic. customers do their shopping and as they leave the facial recognition technology identifies them and deduct the payment from their account. we're still in the test phase so we can't provide exact figures yes but we're fairly certain that a market like this is cheaper to operate the normal supermarket where you are not

holder field. no where are people as enthusiastic about digital shopping us here in china. payment apps and online delivery services are an integral part of their lives. people here accept and tolerate that the stores keep all their purchased data. through the real id. i'm sure this is the way to care for convenience we have to share our personal data i think it's acceptable she just. digitalisation does have its limitations however people are still needed to keep products on the shelves orderly . the chairman of south korea's lot a group has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison according soul jail don't been for bribery in a wide ranging corruption scandal that brought down the country's president the verdict comes at a time when lot of south korea's fifth largest conglomerate and

analysis the historic changing of the guard. and of a leak this is especially not about what would be best in this situation and i also had to consider whether i can and want to fulfill this task after these processes of deliberation we both decided that this is the best course of action you know this is the best to be as leader of the search will democrat parliamentary group knowledges was valued for her ability to bring people together and motivate them. she also has a reputation for being outspoken. some say it was her speech at the social democrats party conference that secured the votes needed for starting coalition talks with angle america's conservative block. we will not give up our s.p.d. party beliefs if we decide to govern in
3:20 pm
a coalition. and renata started out more than twenty years ago with the in the s.p.d. youth organization the young socialists she became the leader in one thousand nine hundred five back then she was a student of political science and told torch of l.a. in one of her first interviews that she didn't plan a political career. for you i don't want to stay in politics for the rest of my life so after being chairwoman i want to look for a real job and for that i need a good degree of knowledge finished her studies four years later and to stayed within the ranks of the s.p.d. ever since as m.p. party official and later as labor minister one of her chief minces germany's minimum wage law she also fought successfully for better pensions despite this she is not very popular with the german public martin schultz a short term you're at the head of the s.p.d. is over now it's up to andrea not just to lead the party back to its former
3:21 pm
strength. there's no doubt growing up political correspondent thomas sparrow welcome to honestly you were at the meeting where the former s.p.d. leader martin shows is said to hand over the leadership and not just doesn't look like it's going to go as he planned. well certainly not everyone in the party is happy about the prospect of on their not as becoming the next leader of the social democrats in fact there are several regional branches of the s.p.d. that are essentially saying that the party membership should also have a say in who leads the party that it shouldn't be a decision about someone being appointed it should be someone being elected and that is why among other things there is also skepticism on one s.p.d. may in the northern german town of flynn's book has already said that she would also like to be the leader of the party so this is essentially a very controversial decision unretire another decision that just stresses the fact
3:22 pm
that the s.p.d. is bitterly divided and it's specifically divided about personnel something that the s.p.d. does wanted to avoid and the man you mention is seymour the langa how much of a challenge to see this she paused to not listen why did she throw the hat in the ring in the first place. well andrea not less is certainly a more important and influential politician than mrs lander that for sure but i think what the mayor of flensburg wanted to do is send a message send a message in the sense that the party leadership should also have a say sends a message that there is skepticism from the rank and file about the decisions made by the party leadership not only by martin shows but also by andrea not as in some of the other members of the party leadership and that is a message that she was trying to say and now it is unlikely that she will become the next leader of the social democrats but it does reflect the fact that there are different opinions within the party and that the party is under no circumstance
3:23 pm
hundred percent supporting that decision to give helm of the social democrats two hundred dollars and all this comes to last as the s.p.d. has hit another historical in the latest been in both if not as the best person to tell him things that on for the s.p.d. given all the divisions you're talking about well she's certainly a politician that can communicate very clearly both with the leadership and with the rank and file both with the leadership and with the members of the social democrats around germany and does something that plays in her favor but we're talking here about something that goes well beyond only who leads the party it's about the renewal of the party as many leaders have said in the last few months in particular after the very bad result in the election on september twenty fourth so on journalists could certainly play a role but again it is something that goes beyond who leads the party. thomas there

thank you very much for that political analysis on that story. another seventeen year old has won gold at the winter olympics in south korea nick mckenna climbed from a sports desk is here with me for all the olympic action welcome nicholas tell me about chloe kim was one ago and it's cloaking an american seventeen year old as i should say i don't know what's in the water in the states as a seventeen year old who was on sunday as well and clearly came today in the hof i absolutely incredibly he was seeing. she actually notes this putting the one of the possible safety going into the final and then pulled off to tell me it is an office that's two triple times no one's actually done that no female libya's done that before in the fight and look at this because the hype they get is incredible and to give just to consider the fact she's seventeen year olds this is old and this you can do that i just love the answer story really because when she was much younger
3:25 pm
she before she used to go to school she'd jump out of the trampoline in the mornings and practice have flips and jumps and this is what's become out of four years ago she qualified for sochi bush was too young to actually go and now the first time of asking she's got a gold medal now clearly kim has a south korean background which makes this whole thing quite interesting especially she's one now south korea she dedicated the gold medal to have grandmother but she's also very happy to have a family there and that's going to listen to what she has to say about you know having my family. be there through the whole process was so helpful and i've surrounded myself with such amazing people that they definitely made it much easier for me but yeah i mean i feel like i got to represent both the u.s. and korea today and i'm very honored to have been able to do that. it's an emotional moment for the whole family concerned and this is another good for canada tell us about that there was indeed this was my calkins prince kingsbury consistency was the key in the moguls which you can see behind us that involves

them of course dipping dipping their knees a lot and going over the hills is quite an energetic sports in the second run of the final of a saw him he went and this is the favorite anyone with a score of eighty six point three six three but the reason why one is because the whole competition ended up not finishing in the ones who did finish which is not his equal they couldn't get a proper score so it's a challenge him and it's a good thing with to be honest because four years ago in sochi he only got silver now he finally has he can as that's a limpid gold medal to his resume and well done to him of course he wasn't the only one to land his first olympic gold was he he wasn't indeed of course you're here who's a household name for anybody who watches alpine skiing an austrian he is considered the best in his sport and it was of his generation we're seeing him here going down the hill the speed that he has the get this. and he was so good that he managed to finish point two three seconds ahead of alex response of all france. for that so easy of the right hands this finally at the time of asking marcel here sure

has his gold medal of course in sochi he only won silver incredibly disappointed then in vancouver eight years ago he even went empty handed more sinking of the line there and as i said he's the greatest of all time he's called the goat's greatest of all time and he said after he finished that run that he absolutely killed it he really really really did and it was nothing like the first olympic gold medal and take it now on a more negative know if we've had the first doping. the game to have it was bound to happen at some point mean people this does happen taking substances of certain sort of like for example medication and that can pop up in test in this particular case is a japanese speed skater he tested positive for something called acetone is out to mean which is a diuretic or masking agent it helps athletes do. weight's mason license person speaking with you he says he doesn't actually know. when he should have taken it he denies everything but because of way of the way this works cast have banned him from the games at least until this whole case has been resumed residents of wright

3:31 pm
respond to the n c's recall tomorrow. the speculation drive in south africa by jacob zuma sponsible exit attention has turned in recent days to one of his four wives and controversial comments she's made on social media with me is not fun from a social media disco welcome con lots of people desperate for answers what are you seeing on online yeah i mean there's just so much speculation in the south africans they want to know what's going to happen with president zuma will he resign when will he really try to stick this out and there's been so much speculation that people are literally turning to instagram to just try to get some information they're speculating on social media and this is that particular instagram post that we're talking about this is actually coming from last week it was posted by the first lady to bigger madiba zuma it's of her and president zuma apparently on a plane in cape town but south africans say there's plenty of clues here as to
3:32 pm
whether or not zuma will in fact step down in the first clues are here in the comments she writes it's going to get rough don't fight with someone who is not fighting you so does that what does that mean it's going to get rough some say that's maybe foreshadowing zuma leaving others saying hail stick it out he's going to fight to stay in office and on another clue here in another comment the first lady wrote this she says zuma will finish what he started so maybe that means zuma won't be stepping down he'll be fighting to stay. in office one more clue here the first lady after this controversy she changed her instagram name it was first lady zuma now it's just called madiba is her name so she took out that first lady's room from her instagram profile name maybe that's also a clue south africans turning into detectives here on instagram they're just so desperate for information they want to know what's going to happen if you said you see the writing on the wall and now we know that the a.n.c. is. about to step down but what are people saying on line about his political fate
3:33 pm
i mean all eyes are on the situation as zuma the a.n.c. you see that online as well five of the top ten trending twitter hashtags all have to do with this political crisis and many south africans there are saying this is really just paralyzing the nation and this is what i mean a woman in johannesburg writes my life has come to a standstill for the last two weeks i don't even go to the germany more as i spend all my time waiting for that i guess that's zuma exit i'm done at this rate zuma will only leave but i'm fat others are casting blame not just on zuma but on the a.n.c. for letting him hang around for so long here the one person right zuma didn't keep him self in power the a.n.c. did so wouldn't protect himself from eight motions of no confidence the a.n.c. did zuma alone didn't obscure the truth of lies and obvious cations the a.n.c. did zuma is not the problem alone cartoonist of course our mates are having a field day with this is well this is one local artist rico. carli and he tweets
3:34 pm
this cartoon it shows president zuma there holding on literally by his fingernails as he's being dragged out of office by a.n.c. president cyril ramaphosa also the deputy president there so lots of reactions on social media and we'll have to wait until tomorrow zuma expected to respond maybe those instagram predictions will come true listener of creative reactions is that got enough money thank you very much of being a lame duck to us. a valid purchase or violent provocation the highly divisive trial of a palestinian teenager is now underway behind closed doors at a military court in israel for palestinians are had damini has become a symbol of their struggle against israel's occupation of the west bank she faces twelve charges including assault and incitement footage of the seventeen year old slapping and pushing two israeli soldiers in her driveway last year bush just tory into the limelight the international human rights groups and the european union have criticized israel's handling of the miners case the case is also ignited

spawn awash in funds to finance arms exports. and do you have a problem see a sponsor will finance arms companies. and if they work badly and run out of money . the bank will go to the government and asking for funds that ship what they are getting a couple to show for each additional. experts in moscow predict that the u.s. will soon extend sanctions to the bank but the government seems unfazed at the prospect when it comes to guns it seems where there is a will there's a way. and that's for you now reporter one of our reporters in most currently showing could see them just how big and key is the weapons industry to the economy give give our viewers a an idea of that. well it's very important to the russian economy russia is the second biggest arms export or worldwide and one of the major arms producers
3:42 pm
worldwide as well and in fact so so big is the economic importance for russia that there's always been a lot of secrecy around the arms industry during the soviet union and even now there are several cities around the country that are actually closed cities because there is an arms manufacturing plant there and i just went on a press tour to one of those cities which is now open in jest and it has the kalashnikov factory in it one of the you know the world famous machine gun and on that even on that press tour we weren't actually given access to the factory and even the press representatives essentially couldn't answer any of the journalists questions kept saying no comment and sanctions seem to be a political particularly. sensitive topic and of course there's also a political significance to the arms trade as well because russia has political leverage through it for example turkey is buying surface to air missiles from
3:43 pm
russia and that has really spooked nato who are worried worried about their their ally kind of cozying up to russia a bit too much so it's really important economically and politically to russia let's bring up that sensitive topic of sanctions that's something that's spruiking the banks right now in russia how how is most of getting around the sanctions. well in russia people say that essentially any law can be bent into the shape that you want it done what people say here on the streets and that certainly applies to sanctions as well you just heard about the bank and that's that's just one of the things happening here since sanctions were brought in one of the main strategies that russia has used is to kind of bring production into the country from the west so they are it's very important to them to have this label made in russia and russia has also hit the west with counter sanctions for example when it comes to agricultural products such as cheese which
3:44 pm
a lot of the ex-pats here in russia definitely complain about me included and they want more cheese to be produced in russia now that leads to a kind of absurd situations as well because they are foreign russia's foreign partners still want to cooperate with russia so for example a french company recently brought cows into the country to produce cheap milk which was then used by those russian cheese producers so they have certainly found ways around the sanctions. cheese of people but very inventive ones as well thank you have really for your analysis iceland is expected to consume more energy in mining virtual currencies that it uses to powell all homes in the country north atlantic island has become a major hub of the big mining thanks in part to its cheaper new ability they'll make is talking about taxing the profits of bitcoin mines that's likely to go down well among icelanders who has come skeptical of financial speculation since the

disastrous banking crash a decade ago. i would look with them later at what all u.s. presidents have in common yes i would have to see on that ben because there's one thing which all of us presidents have in common they find their way into the national portrait gallery in washington at some point here for example we have george washington the first president he's seen as by the painter rembrandt piece in seventeen ninety five and then you have to have lincoln in mortal eyes on canvas george peter alexander healey in eight hundred eighty seven and a more recent fun judy f. kennedy's portrayed by elaine de kooning a painting that aligns attention among the most sober images off of their leaders that is it j. f. kennedy and now when you look at all these portraits of all these presidents there is one glaring fact that stands out they're all white men well not any more

barack obama as the first african-american to have his poor traits in the galleries hall of presidents this image of the former first lady michelle obama will be on display by a couple of the first occupants of the white house to have their official portraits painted by black artists barack obama's portrait is the one lee is renowned for painting people of color in the style of the old masters he didn't follow all of obama's suggestions try to negotiate was greater. artistic integrity would not allow him to do what i asked. smaller ears. struck out on matters well. the artist says he was deeply moved by the experience of painting the former president this is our ability to say i matter i was here.
3:47 pm
the ability to be the first african-american. to paint the first african-american president of the united states is absolutely wrong the. former first lady michelle obama was painted by the black artist amy cheryl michelle declared herself both owner and humbled. i'm also thinking about all the young people particularly girls and girls of color who in years ahead will come to this place and they will look up and they will see an image of someone who looks like them hanging on the wall of this great american institution. the presidential portrait is a rite of passage for former u.s. leaders the images of the obama's have already attracted more attention than most.
3:48 pm
as you can imagine the portraits have been a hot topic of discussion on social media prominent black writers and cultural figures have been weighing in los angeles journalist johnny smith said the protests would help in exposing audiences likely to be predominantly white to conspicuous blackness but i'm most looking forward to seeing reprints framed in home states of dorm walls and affixed to his but for the shoppers were out in force is bad from this series they're showing obama disappearing into the greenery here is a live look at what donald trump is doing to obama's legacy. and had a go at the man and the painting barack obama a whole list simpson we let you decide don't forget business on our website that dot com. well it's that time of the year again which is days to go on to the opening of this

year's bill an international film festival known as the. before tickets started going on field people even camped out overnight to be first in line the festival kicks off on stage. and got a desk has joined me to tell me more can we saw all these people lining up to get tickets what are the hot films to see that's right well this is the people's festival as we know and the hot films are definitely too many to list them all here but i would say that the major highlights are coming from directors who have made a big splash at the festival in past years and so especially someone like american wes anderson who opened the festival back in two thousand and fourteen with the grand budapest hotel you might remember that also went on to win the silver bear grand jury prize at the time now he is kicking things off for us this year with a first for the belly and that is an animated opening film. pile of dogs is set in a dystopian future japan due to

also going to but we do see some stars who's coming to town for the body of knowledge that's right well fans of breaking bad will be thrilled to know that bryan cranston as it has said that he will make an appearance french actress pair is obviously an icon she's expected to be here robert pattinson of twilight fame so there will be lots of action on the red carpet in russia and the honorary golden bear this year for lifetime achievement is going to the american actor willem dafoe who you'll probably remember from his roles in films like platoon or mississippi burning which we can see here in this short clip he's had an unforgettable. slew of roles and a brilliant career over many decades and the festival will be having a retrospective showing how many of his major films in his on are willem dafoe is also currently in the running for the oscar for best supporting actor for his role in in the florida project so this is a busy couple of weeks for him right and since we are in germany so was looking for a job in films this is good very very good in fact because we've got twenty four
3:53 pm
films in the competition section four of which are actually by german directors for instance transit we can have a look here is the latest offering from the celebrated in our times director chris pet so as this film is adopted from the world war two novel of the same name so transit that's what loves to play with identity mysteries this tells the story of a young man who assumes the identity of a dead writer to escape from nazi occupied france and that's german actor fun we see there playing the lead role now thirty two year old hans also stars in another film that's in competition and it's called in the isles with twenty one fame and he's also going to be one of this year's shooting stars so we will be seeing a lot more of him at this year's festival but you know tons for him the billing for the festival is very political it's valued for its political cinema but there's been some politics of a different kind which has been kind of brewing and rick. offering a bit of a shadow on the festival which was unquestionable i suppose because obviously the

need to movement has got to be addressed as it's literally on the present in the film industry at the moment and director did a cause like was saying at the opening press conference that he feels really relatively vindicated. the feeling in vindicated by events because values like diversity and gender parity tolerance have always been key values of this festival so they've gotten a little bit of flak with the recent announcement that they accepted a film by the south korean director. although they knew that he was actually accused of sexual assault by an actress of his on his on his last film that he was acquitted by a court which sort of justify the decision in their eyes but the decision to accept his film and maybe not accept certain others who were involved in similar cases was possibly not the wisest as this is come out but rest assured the festival will be having multiple discussions and of course platforms addressing the issues of sexual harassment and gender discrimination in the film industry so it's on the table this

is an issue that is definitely not going away and exactly i'm getting back on the fence i went and got my first really not of tickets yet is very so i just didn't live my suit not enough so that the last we went in the evenings or the line was shorter than in the morning. no i didn't but as got any film that you can recommend i would definitely remember recommend probably that i don't think it's about because i am a great fan of hers and i think she just her roles she just keeps getting better and she just never stops. an exciting one ok but i have more tips for you probably as the days go by the website absolutely obviously and we will be reporting around the clock from the belly nala also online so there will be lots to keep up with should be exciting stuff looking forward to talking to you again and again not if i think you're going to be much. here's a recap of the top stories that we're following for you on the job due south african president jacob zuma has been formally asked by the ruling party to step
