deputy president of the i c s you and i were both deputy presidents of our organization i'm sorry that you elect to be behind a little bit of the before. but i'd like to welcome your very kind words. where you say you will support the work that i will be doing and that you will give us much support as to what we will all be doing collectively so i think you for that my dear is d p. thank you very much. to the leader of the p.c.'s this is not here to whom we've never thought that this was true what we've already said is that we are going to seek to improve the lives of our
2:16 pm
people on an ongoing basis and since one thousand nine hundred four we've done precisely that the lives of our people have been improving on an ongoing basis and the commitment that you will find on this side which commitment i would like you also to be powered off is that all of us should continue to improve the lives of our people and take their lives to a higher level i'd like to end by thinking my comrade jackson and temple for your most wonderful words i thank you and i'm here as a result of the support that i've received from my organization the african national congress. thank. african national congress which continues to lead the national democratic.
2:17 pm
revolution in our country to bring about change its watch has food many of us here in this house and our intent is to continue in deeds to improve the lives of people and ladies and gentlemen members of this house made him speak and chief justice that is what i would like to say at this moment and thank you all for this great opportunity that i've been given and i will try to work very hard not to disappoint the people of south africa thank you very much thank you live coverage coming to you from dettori at the parliament where the new would be appointed president has just been speaking. to members.
2:18 pm
that he's listening to this that he needs the house is that going. ok as you heard the house is the general and on a historic day for south africa the country has a new president off to months of turmoil it political uncertainty and infighting within the governing and see party the country has made a political transition and got a new president. if you've just joined us you're watching news coming to you live from berlin we've just been listening to citizen robert shortly after he was elected the new president of south africa listening to him with me in the studio as our correspondent christine welcome christine that i can start a moment i'm so happy to share it with you now one of the main things that struck me as soon as i'm up was it was talking the atmosphere in the parliament there was a sense of relief and there's a sense of joy and levity what was your impression definitely in fact the
2:19 pm
opposition is calling it their victory that jacob zuma is no longer president of a country we have heard from two major parties to have selected its biggest opposition parties today they gave a press briefing shortly before the parliament set to elixir on a porch that they say that we fight is not finished but we are happy that we have brought the country to the stage the opposition telling the public that it is essentially the pressure that we have been putting on the a.n.c. that has forced him to to have president zuma find he'd leave office but as he stood the u.n. listening to to negotiate i'll remind you that soros was that was very much interest or mental in the negotiations that took place when south africa translated into a democracy that the negotiations that took place between the former government of the national party and of course the new leadership of the a.n.c. he knows how to deal with people across the political divide so to say how to speak to use opponents the opposition and you said it's work together and let's build
2:20 pm
this country together we all have a commitment to the people so sort of like a reconsider tree toad almost and i think this is probably the last time things will look so graceful the opposition has said that office today they will give president obama was a hard time in parliament and talking mud reaching out across the political divide he was reaching out a lot during his address down to parliament mentioning various individuals by need and talking about their shared history tell us more about all this is the thing i mean sir of course that is no stranger to. political scene although a lot of people might be wondering who is this guy and way and waited he suddenly come out of in fact one of the the m.p.'s went on to say you'll shop rise you know almost as if he came out of nowhere but the reality is was is very very much instrumental in south africa due south africa's history essentially he was meant to take over from nelson mandela things changed at the last minute ramaphosa was very disappointed to the extent that he did not even attend nelson mandela in the movie
2:21 pm
ration but nelson mandela knew the person he had cerebral palsy he's a trained lawyer and so he then went to him and approached him and austin to lead the if it's a building over the drafting a new constitution for south africa before that he had a history as a student activist this is a trade unionist who came from you know the sort of the the flaw in my essentially so in that time you build a lot of relationships with a lot of political pays a lot of things that we're seeing in that part of it house today you sense went on to go into business that you went into the mining sector has come back one of south africa's wealthiest men but certainly kept the political ties and his time out of politics while you was to business really kept him away from the scene of scandal essentially and so he by and large has as opinion record although there is an issue with that with so repulsive that the opposition is very quick to remind people about is that you will remember the money kind of shootings in two thousand and thirteen that is when police shot and killed thirty four striking miners also
2:22 pm
happened to be on the board off that my he was found to have had written a mail to the police commissioner of the country and osce that police be deployed to handle the situation the opposition has always painted that as so i'm opposed actually in the interests of white capital is that debate in south africa about who really owns the country's wealth so maybe people will brett who are critics of from a horse have branded him as one who labels on the side of white capital that he. has been in the cross of the bush was he so to say that is he really can you really identify with the struggle of black people so that is what he's critics would be shocked to say about him but in terms of scandal and and melyssa anything of the sort by and large has a pin record so we have to see actually whether this issue come resurfaces not that he's become president but he's also become president seen at a time when the a.n.c. is quite divided and we sold out over the issue of zuma as to how the parties seem
2:23 pm
to have a couple of factions that i second opposing sides how difficult will it be for saddam up was it to unite the party behind him now that he's become president it's going to be very difficult and what this implies is why i'm saying this is because this is going to play out in the public space you have won it he's won it in one of his replies to one of the m.p.'s he said yes if you know my appointments are going to be important to who the team that i'm going to build the cabinet that he's going to build he is now going to have to build a new cabinet and it's going to be interesting to see whether he's going to pick some of the zuma loyalists and include them in the cabin as a lot of them in boilers have issues right now in the sense that in the eyes of the public they are seen as corrupt they are seen as having the stage there is right now an ongoing probe into state capture essentially they extent to which play is in the political scene assisted people outside of government to to get access to state resources and so we sit with a party where they are still some strong zuma allies who who would think that they
2:24 pm
deserve a place in sort of a post as kevin has and him simply shunning them would of course not heal divisions in the party but of course him bracing them would put him in a lot of trouble in the eyes of the public who say aren't you the guy who we're hoping is going to clean up corruption that is the one thing he's been telling south africans i'm going to come in and clean up the corruption i'm going to britney brand this party so this is a very divided party we saw it when they emerged from the elective conference in december so i'm opposed to just printing the a.n.c. presidency. to show you just the extent to which things are not to get so of course it's a dawn of a new era in south african politics but also fraught with a lot of challenges for the new president let's not have a look at a portrait of the new president of south africa. he's made it a whole month of his campaign rallies. that's. why he. can still.
2:25 pm
earn to justice. or not they're not. suffer because new presidency were around poser also think that this would set him apart from his former boss jacob zuma but after nine years under zuma scandal ridden reign as south africa's new leader he faces many challenges ahead with a political career spanning more than four decades around oppose it was a close ally of nelson mandela and played a major role in the country's post apartheid democratic transition more than two decades have now passed since the end of the racist regime but inequalities remain firmly entrenched south africa is rich in resources but many lives without electricity or running water unemployment levels are sky high and more than two thirds of young people. economic growth has been pretty much stagnant and zuma
2:26 pm
ram opposed it will be hoping to cash in on foreign investments since his resignation sent the rand soaring high that could also help generate jobs to fill the void of skilled workers. elected as soon as vice president in twenty fourteen around post it was never a lapdog he's criticizing the in the past but i have to rebuild a lot of trust for a population fed up with seemingly endless stories of the a.n.c. is corruption for many young people this is more present than the party's post apartheid legacy but that will only go to plan if he manages his first most important task uniting his ruling party for the twenty nineteen elections his election is a.n.c. leader in december was labeled as a turning point for south africa now he's also the country's leader which so much at stake south africa will wait to see if he fills the presidential void.
2:27 pm
and that we put that question to christine when bo is following this story closely for us do you think he'd be able to fill that void and what do you think would be his main priority his main priority will be the economy of south africans are in desperate need off the economy to be pushed into it to decent growth rates that people are without work and economic indicators continue to paint a very bleak picture there is also the expectation that he is going to deal with corruption i think people now understand how corruption is really causing a lot of problems in south africa that for instance money that has been educated to assist young black or troponin is for example has been found to find itself in the wrong pockets so to say so people understand that these are some of the things that he has to take care of because despite the country's if it's even if it's doing well in other regards the corruption issue has been consistently mentioned by even the investors who say we're worried about south africa because of the navels off
2:28 pm
corruption so it's that because to me and corruption and for now for this moment of great sense of great elation in south africa as you said he was singing in parliament. your time has come yes christine well thank you very much for your insights and your analysis on that the dawn of a new era in south african politics you're watching the news and have more news for you in half an out of forward to seeing you than that by. cop and don't. groan just a boat and down again. we take you to europe's most famous no boundary engine. this one talks of all europe's highest peak molo the. the winter is that it's best right here going to the mountains all seemingly is this week's pure romance.
