a court decision not to infringe on the independence of the courts but they did agree to help speed up the process in turkey made good on that promise and i'm particularly grateful to turkey's foreign minister for that. but. then as usual was never charged during his year long detention but now on the day of his release he has been charged with spreading terrorist propaganda turkish prosecutors are thinking a jail term of up to eighteen years father is free and his family are celebrating. this photograph of danny see chelsea released from jail was posted by his lawyer friday afternoon you jel in the arms of his wife after a year behind bars german chancellor angela merkel welcome to the decision to release the german turkish journalist why me feel if you know as many other people i'm very glad that he was able to leave prison today i am of course happy for him and his wife and his family who had to endure

a very difficult year of separation. and also. one year ago dennis you tell was detained in istanbul turkish authorities accuse the correspondent for the german daily developed of terrorist propaganda among other things but until today he had not been charged with any crime the german government has campaigned vigorously for the release of you tell as well as other journalists imprisoned in turkey many civilian organizations also demonstrated for his release it is very likely that turkish president are the one is behind the decision you tell may have been released from jail but in their indictment turkish prosecutors have demanded up to eighteen years imprisonment to w. corresponded to julia harlow joins us from istanbul welcome. germany's foreign minister saying that was heading for the airport what's the latest on his whereabouts. well phil let me first say what
6:04 pm
a crazy day this was this has been so far with a lot of uncertainty all kinds of emotions but most of all of cause relieved and happiness many journalists here including me and other german colleagues are very relieved. was released today you have to imagine the man was staying in jail without charges for a year and now he was released within a few hours basically what we know now that is is that he is in fact on his way to one of the two east. and we also hear that there is a private plane waiting for him taking him to germany but we don't know yet to where exactly he is headed in germany and i don't want to even imagine what his wife must be feeling like she was waiting for this day desperately she was trying to support him she was waiting here in istanbul for him so for her and everyone who
6:05 pm
supports and loved him as your child this must be an incredible day despite. well indeed the state prosecution suddenly came up with an indictment i've read the indictment it's only three pages long and again it says he's accused of spreading terrorist propaganda and inciting hatred and they're citing especially his journalistic work here and the fact that he did interviews with leaders of the outlawed kurdistan workers' party the p.k. k. which is from a journalistic point something journalists do they do listen to different sides of a conflict in order to understand what's going on and yes the state prosecution is asking for a jail time of up to eighteen years but since he was not demanded to stay here in turkey there were no no bans and he can actually leave for germany i wonder whether
6:06 pm
he will be back and actually be appearing in court any time soon again. many journalists who were. tell us about the situation other reporters well yes right there are dozens of other journalists still in turkish prison still behind bars and why this has been a very happy day for dan his huge l. it has been a terrible day for several other turkish journalists well known turkish journalists who were charged today. with a terrorist propaganda in the name of the so-called green movement and actually they were sentenced to life times in jail this is a very very harsh sentence for journalists so of course this day has mixed emotions and many people here are shocked about this really really hard verdict when it comes to other turkish journalists.

and here in germany the first day of the annual munich security conference has begun the event sees heads of state foreign and defense ministers and diplomats gather to discuss international security policy germany's defense minister used her speech to criticize u.s. moves to cut spending on the united nations a sort of underlying also argued that diplomacy and development aid were as necessary as military strength and she spoke about europe's role in nato. and we want to remain transatlantic we also want to become more european or we want to enable europe to carry more weight in terms of military power so that europe can be more independent and self-reliant and ultimately that includes nato. chief political correspondent melinda crane is there in munich welcome melinda last
6:08 pm
year following president from selection it was knots of concern expressed that the u.s. might retreat from its global responsibilities are we hearing the same concerns they share. i wouldn't say that there's a concern of retreat but certainly a concern that the u.s. takes its responsibility in a more narrow sense that the u.s. is taking perhaps a more military and a more transactional approach to its engagement with the world and its partnership with europe you mentioned words of criticism from the german defense minister actually she didn't explicitly name the united states but she made it pretty clear that that is the country that she referred to when she said we're concerned about countries that are cutting back support for diplomacy for development assistance for the united nations and she said she said that there absolutely must be
6:09 pm
a holistic view of security that it's not enough to see it in purely military terms and that's a sense that you get off stage here at the conference as well as on stage that the u.s. perhaps now defines peace through strength but really really very focused on military hardware and on the big rivals to u.s. power meaning russia and china nonetheless the secretary general of nato for example was very keen to make the point that the u.s. is still in europe it has a brigade stationed in poland partly in response to concerns about people in some parts of eastern europe that after the events in ukraine there could be a threat to them as well so there he clear statement yes the u.s. is still here but it's in gauge what is different. a conference chairman volk on the issue said that the world had become
6:10 pm
a bold dangerous place one of the biggest risks that people that are talking about . indeed this year's conference is titled intitled to the brink. and some of the things that people worry could push us over the brink north korea we've heard both the u.n. secretary general the head of nato and others saying this is a serious threat of real nuclear confrontation and it's very very complex we have the entire security council on one page on this and yet it's very hard to see how we're going to get a breakthrough and then that conflict interlinked with the discussion about the nuclear agreement with iran and that egremont having been thrown into question among other things by the trump administration so increasing complexity in the sense that conflicts and issues are interrelated another one another area mentioned by all speakers the middle east with all of its different conflicts again
6:11 pm
interrelated and very complex. i believe the crane and unit thank you. now let's take a look at some of the other stories making news around the world prominent trump critic and forward republican presidential candidate mitt romney has announced his bid for the u.s. senate to represent the state of utah romney had been a potential candidate for secretary of state under president trump but before that he had been one of trump's harshest critics during the twenty sixteen presidential campaign. a vigil in parkland florida has paid tribute to the seventeen victims of wednesday's high school shooting many of the people attending called for stricter gun control sources say the nineteen year old suspect used a semiautomatic rifle to carry out the second deadliest school shooting in u.s. history. oh another day another film or three for the w.'s that david leavitt's who's down at the berlin international film festival welcome david talk

a certain red carpet action. well behind me some really die hard robert pattinson fans are clutching their glossy pictures of him hoping to get his autograph he said to come through here the red carpet in about an hour for the screening of his new movie it's called damsel and this is going to be a different picture for robert pattinson fans he's not in the role of the vampire this time it's a western and he is trying to save his fiance who's been kidnapped or at least that's what we're led to believe that everything gets flipped on its head this is a western a satire of a western rather that really turns everything around and we find out that the damsel in the picture is no damsel in distress after all like in real life the woman is wearing the pants she knows what's going on it's the men who need rescuing and this is really a movie that fits in with me two times this is the first belly nala says to me to
6:13 pm
movement took on as robert pattinson said a little earlier at the press conference basically his character has issues with consent to this woman has rejected him and and he just doesn't know how to deal with that so we've got a very strong female lead some are calling it a feminist western a good movie to fit in with the guys of the times what else would you say. well funny enough the other big movie today is another western a world premiere it's called black forty seven and it's a very different kind of western this is not a comedy unlike damsels this western is actually set in ireland against the backdrop of the potato famine and eight hundred forty seven it's about a british soldier who's deserted the british army he comes home and he goes on a path of vengeance against the british colonial forces in ireland who are missed treating his family basically very serious film great cast. can't tell you more yet
6:14 pm
because it's the world premiere today and you touched on it briefly at the top that this is the first building on the web made to has been in the how else has it made itself manifest briefly if you wouldn't mind. well there was a petition actually going around to turn the carpet behind me black in solidarity with me to that didn't happen we have seen a lot of black scarves black dresses on the red carpets and also the selection of the films there's much more emphasis on female voices and apparently a lot of films that have been left out because of questionable directors and allegations against them so that's what we've been seeing so far i david leavitt's and downtown bell and thank you. some video of an attempted robbery in china that gives a whole new meaning to the expression thick as thieves the c.c.t.v. footage shows two hooded man casing a store in shanghai before deciding to make their move the criminals cutting plan was to throw bricks through the store when the loot was just
