11:02 pm
here's a piece of that iranian drone. or what's left of it after we shot it down. i brought it here so you can see it for yourself mr zarif. do you recognize this. you should it george you can take back with you a message to the tyrants of terror and. do not test israel's resolve. netanyahu is a vehement critic of the twenty fifteen nuclear agreement negotiated between six world powers and iran and he sees that as a form of appeasement that won't prevent iran from building a nuclear bomb or maneuvering to become the dominant power in the region. i think it's time to stop and you know their aggressive they're developing ballistic missiles they're not inspecting and they're going to have a free highway to massive enrichment this has to be changed

a widespread sense here that the united states as a guarantor of international peace and security is no longer willing to play that role speakers on the very first day including the german defense minister ursula funday lion indicated that they feel that the u.s. approach is now predominantly focused on military means and on u.s. interests that the u.s. essentially views foreign policy as a transactional affair the question then arose are other powers able to step into the role as a guarantor of a systemic approach and certainly european spokespeople people here were eager to say that europe is ready and willing to take on more responsibility we heard german the foreign and the defense ministers saying that there is
11:06 pm
a commitment to greater coordination of european security policy even to europe of the european foreign policies and that european countries are now committed to paying more for their own defense but whether they will really step into a global systemic role remains to be seen. in the united states supporters of tighter controls on guns are pushing lawmakers to take action following last week's massacre at a florida high school students from the school were former classmates shot seventeen people to death rallied in fort lauderdale to demand stricter regulations on firearms speakers criticize legislators for taking money from pro-gun lobbying groups and failing to pass laws making it more difficult to buy some weapons. now to some of the other stories making news around the world arabians are waiting to learn the fate of sixty five people on a crashed airliner the flight had started in toronto and was bound for the southern

european cinema detail the use david leavitt's is on the red carpet for us david what is going on down there. well it's been a really big day for female driven films in particular right now i'm outside the world premiere of a swedish dark comedy called the real estate and this comes on the heels of the square another swedish dark comedy winning at cannes well this one's a little different it's about a very tough middle aged woman who inherits a very rundown apartment building and her determination to be in control of it and edge out her male relatives also some dodgy tenants and she's willing to stop at nothing i have to say that the reception to this movie was very mixed strong woman that's what we want to see and especially the first belly nala
11:10 pm
after me to this one wasn't very likable. oh perhaps there was something else that you saw today that premiered that got a better response a much better response actually the movie that premiered just before this. a daughter of mine it's an italian film about three women strong women three brilliant performances actually and that got a great response if i were a betting man i might say that this is they're in the running for a golden bear we've got a closer look. it's a stunning portrait of motherhood figure me a daughter of mine follows ten year old victorian his lights turned upside down by the discovery of her birth mother forcing her to navigate a treacherous path between opposing maternal figure it's. easy. that.
11:11 pm
intelligent and rich in metaphor the film dismantles the classic madonna and whole truth behind a complex picture of two powerful but flawed women. in. my our. love it is the work of italian directed lured by spurring the first female director of the competition so far the feature debut sworn in also starring about her by her was a bad analogy hicks in twenty fifteen this time she's returning with renowned italian actress the lariat galeano. at all and all i was the new go. i had to elbow my way in. between them they are for a sensitive and moving exploration of the female condition. the idea was to

investigate maternity in a more way to deconstruct the image of a perfect mother which is often idealized and to tell the story of inadequate mothers. in my view there is something real and true in this imperfection there is a beauty in this imperfection. so women stories are front and center at this year's ballon either but here bashfully here mia for its rule and complex picture of womanhood you may also be the prize how often you'll be on the edge of you'll see. this very missed out on a golden bear in twenty fifteen we may still have a weeks ago before this year's winner is announced but there's already chatter about whether this could be a year. so david do you think that this movie has a good chance at clinching the golden bear but with the competition heating up who do you think we might be talking about this time next week. well there are
11:13 pm
a couple of movies next week that i think we really still need to keep our eyes on gus van sant the director of the elephant and good will hunting has a new movie and there's also a movie from mexico starring got a got to see a bad novel also a big figure at the now there was another movie called transit earlier that was generating a lot of buzz and this is a very different look at world war two it takes place in france but as if it were a current day and people are saying that this is creating maybe you more empathy among present day europeans for refugees who are coming to europe by taking a different look at that through the eyes of world war two actually so there was a lot of positive buzz around that film by german director. it's still too early to say for sure but i think that fear. i have elbowed that one out there are
11:14 pm
nineteen of the sorry there are nineteen films in the running for the golden bear four of them are directed by women and i think me too. in the context of me to maybe a woman's ear david leavitt's reporting live from the berlin red carpet thanks very much. stay tuned for the pundits that go with pablo in the guess i must show you which team prevails and plenty more. and a brief reminder of the top story we're following for you speaking at the munich security conference israel's prime minister binyamin netanyahu held up what he called part of an iranian shot down in israeli airspace a week ago he warned israel could strike iran if it felt threatened and reigning foreign minister zarif accused israel of using a question asked policy. you're watching the news in berlin with more at the top of the hour thanks for watching news.
