two hundred fifty people have been killed in the past december since sunday. and germany's social democrats vote on a deal that could see them enter a new government but the party is deeply divided we get the grassroots view from a party member who's against another coalition with uncle michael's conservatives. also on the program promoting your film at the belly knowledge means longs for early morning press calls looks like actor you walk in phoenix didn't get that memo he and director gus van sant teamed up to answer questions about their new film a contender for the festival's tom. blow i'm terry martin good to have you with us. in syria a government backed troops have entered a freenet kurdish enclave in the north of the country turkey is preparing to lay siege to the city as part of an offensive against kurdish militia it uses terrorists and a security threat but the arrival of troops backed by damascus is stoking fears of
9:02 am
a confrontation with turkey that could further complicate syria's bitter civil war . pro syrian government forces chant unity slogans after entering the northern enclave of a freen they've come to help kurdish fighters resist the turkish offensive which began a month ago. we are in the heart of offering with huge numbers and will stay here until we kick out the ottoman turks occupiers let many. turkey says its troops out of the area and force the pro-government fighters to retreat president recha type everyone has warned them to stay away. which is unfortunately as you know these kinds of terror organizations take the wrong steps with the decisions they make. of course it's impossible for us to allow this they will pay a heavy price. russia's foreign minister is calling for dialogue
9:03 am
saying the syrian conflict can only be resolved if all parties respect each other's territorial integrity. still. i'm convinced that turkish legal interests with regards to ensuring security can be fulfilled and satisfied through direct dialogue with the syrian government she was pretty movies you know look sprightly to sleep cityscape q ankara says the offensive is aimed at driving out the kurdish wide p.g. militia which it views as terrorists and a threat to turkish security but the latest fighting raises the prospect of a wider escalation of the conflict. our correspondent dorian jones is following developments for us from istanbul dorrian turkish and syrian government forces together with their allied militias are now facing off in how serious is this
9:04 am
confrontation. well there has to potential to be extremely serious at the moment we are talking about only several hundred militias linked to the massacres entering africa and joining the syrian kurdish militia in the fight against this turkish offensive the numbers are relatively small and given the fact that we're talking about a force of thirty or forty thousand turkish and it's militias that it is supporting involved in this offensive what will be concerned about is is this the beginning of a new development will further militias linked to damascus and iran join this fight along with heavy weapons that they do have including tanks and armored cars at the moment it's unclear to massacres hasn't made any official statements over this there has been speculation that these militias that join the syrian kurds are linked and have previously fought with the syrian kurdish militia in the past it is
9:05 am
part of a wider development is unclear one thing is sure will be on the phone to moscow and tehran probably to say that this has to end of what is a risk of a much wider confrontation looms which will have major implications in particular for moscow's efforts to bring an end to the syrian civil war but turkey is expressing resolve for its offensive inside syria can turkey still expect to succeed with its military offensive in given that assad's troops have now entered the fray. well this is a big question i think that what we will be seeing is that turkey will be accelerating its operations in the african enclave we've already heard from the turkish president choose day they will be planning to lay siege to our friends main city which is also called our friend in the coming days that is a sign that. possibly has only a limited time to secure its goals before major changes on the ground
9:06 am
a key factor here will be. currently control syrian air space it is at the moment allowing turkish as jets to continue supporting the offensive into syria if that is removed that would be a major setback to the took i would put it in doubt will be now almost given the fact is also an important part of the syrian regime daryn thank you so much. saying in syria there is mounting international concern about the latest assault on eastern guta the rebel held area there has been under bargeman by syrian government forces an independent monitors now say more than two hundred fifty people have been killed there since sunday. a group of suburbs on the outskirts of damascus is the main town in the enclave which is completely surrounded by forces the siege which has lasted more than four years is thought to have trapped
9:07 am
up to four hundred thousand residents there the u.n. says it's deeply alarmed by the escalating violence. in the bombed out caucus of eastern these are the lucky ones terrified shaking but still walking. first responders usher them to safety as an air raid siren underlines the arjun singh as he escaped yet. the government's four year long aerial siege of the rebel held and played has intensified in recent days. with hundreds killed and injured and to national observers say it marks a new epoch of violence. we are witnessing some of the worst fighting of the entire conflict and the widespread
9:08 am
destruction of civilian infrastructure including medical facilities. double joy has received reports of attacks on five hospitals in eastern go into and it's working to verify these reports and the casualties the syrian opposition leader begged for an international response saying the atrocities a moment or two a war crime. this the boy these children had been killed just out of their midst all. because of the been of the sea their regime and the iranian militias and the russian air forces they are claiming that this artillery the these are children and that it will fight for years. the bloodshed is so relentless here unicef should have blank statement in response to the un agency for children said words couldn't describe the suffering. which is left to numbers to tell the story of the staff of station but even monitoring groups can
9:09 am
barely keep up with the daily death toll here. let's go now to damascus where my wallet is standing by from the united nations world food program thanks for talking with us a recent report from the u.n. world food program said that some civilians and they were collapsing from hunger described a dire situation how much worse has that situation there in eastern due to become in the last two days. yeah the world who program is increasingly alarmed by the escalation in violence which is leading to higher and higher levels of food insecurity basically people do not have any access to the markets who markets are closed under bombardment and we have news that several of the bakeries that exist inside this enclave have been destroyed we also know that every week there is about
9:10 am
thirty thousand to forty thousand bread bundles that are weekly produced to serve the population those bakers are no longer available so the situation is getting worse and people are forced to stay underground to avoid the shelling unable to go on to the streets or whatever's left of them to collect or buy food so a dire situation there in eastern goot what about aid organizations getting there and getting food for example other supplies medical supplies into eastern ghouta how how difficult is it to get in. it's extremely difficult and very frustrating for the world food program and other united nations agencies we have been requesting repeatedly for access and after seventy eight days of requests we finally got approval to enter is an area on the southern eastern part of eastern huta and we went there last week delivering food to only seven thousand two hundred people and this accounts for two point five percent of the total needs. to the
9:11 am
local councils told us that the food was so little they would have to actually divide each ration into five portions to be able to share it with the most vulnerable families this is why we've continued to call for access but first we need a secession of hostilities because we cannot go in as convoys under shelling what more would do the people in eastern guta need from your organization and other aid organizations what do they need. well when you're living in besiegement for a long time you cease to have access to food medical assistance or just basic commodities to be able to carry on with your life on a daily basis you're also missing education you're missing you're missing shelter you're missing blanket or i mean to have electricity so what needs to happen is for the fighting to stop and then humanitarian organizations including the world food programme can then go in and assess the situation but also provide emergency
9:12 am
humanitarian assistance from our perspective that would be rude that would don't sustain the people on a week to week basis or what thank you very much for talking with us there was more they're talking to us from damascus she's with the u.n. world food program. those mothers stories making news around the world today the u.s. state department says north korea canceled a planned meeting with vice president mike pence at the last minute it was supposed to hold talks with government representatives during the olympic games in south korea reportedly scrapped the idea after pence denounced the north's human rights abuses brazil's senate has approved it to create that authorizes the army to take command of police forces in the state of rio de janeiro the measure comes in a bid to curb violence is driven by drug gangs brazil's president michel tamar said they have virtually taken over urban. and at least fifty at least five thousand

people have been cut off by landslides and hundreds of tourists are stranded after a powerful storm battered new zealand's south island the storm was the tail end of cycle which tore through several pacific nations last week. though a new twist in corruption claims at the lab the in so yeah that's right the government is saying this is part of a smear campaign to discredit the country alluding without saying mentioning the name of a another country which is nearby and has been involved in some election meddling but the defense ministry has spoken out saying those corruption allegations regarding the country's central bank governor of quote a massive information campaign from outside now in a statement the ministry said that the claims that a muslim civic to bribes in return for keeping a bank in business were intended to erode trust and influence the country's

elections which are going to be held in october. a day after he was released on bail the governor of lobbyist central bank. dismissed all corruption allegations as you should i be like target of an obvious and well coordinated campaign of some large in commercial banks aiming to discredit the lobby and state to be false good . claims he became a target because of his effort to clean up corruption in the country's banking sector. despite his assertion of innocence which was suspended from office shortly after his statement. the central bank governor allegedly demanded one hundred thousand euros a month in bribes from the owner of the lothian bank norvig bank gaza. and we can speak to our financial correspondent connoted booze and now he's in frankfurt home of the e.c.b. where of course mr rim savage is also on the governing board a good seat conrad do we know what e.c.b.
9:15 am
colleagues of mr him said it should say about this case the e.c.b. council members including mario draghi the president of the e.c.b. have been totally quiet about this so far at least in public there's a meeting at the european central bank council meeting happening today it's very likely that the events in latvia are a big topic there it's very unlikely though that we are going to learn many of the details talked about at this meeting still the people here in frankfurt's financial city one third european central bank to take action if really in of us room service the government of the latvian central bank was the target of a smear campaign here by operated by commercial banks in latvia the reputation not only of the national supervisor of the central bank in latvia but the reputation of the supervisors of the whole euro system is at stake right and what

saying the country has been taking money and jobs out of their economies but now a new study suggests the opposite it says germany's appetite for imports is responsible for creating five million jobs within the european union alone because germany's exporters by many of their components from other countries before selling the finished products approved the study says almost one million jobs and potent depend on germany as to home a million in the netherlands. venezuela is cryptocurrency to petro is just one day all over the country socialist leaders are already claiming a big success saying dave received more than seven hundred million dollars worth of bids in a private pre-sale president nicolas maduro said the petro would reinforce the country's independence is the first digital currency to be backed by a state and its price will be linked to that of a barrel of venezuelan crude oil when it goes on sale next month when israel has the world's largest proven oil reserves but it is in the midst of

a crippling economic and political crisis. authorities in the e.u. are reading themselves to impose high tariffs on american products like whiskey orange juice and motorcycles that's if u.s. president donald trump follows through on his threats to hit imported europeans deal with punitive measures u.s. secretary of commerce wilbur ross has suggested the likelihood of putting a twenty four percent tariff on all still steel imports or introducing a quota. emotions are running hot in the steel sector it could be the next flashpoint for trade between the e.u. and the us washington is considering imposing tariffs on foreign made metals imported into the country the u.s. made it clear it will take that kind of move lying down. we stand ready to react swiftly and appropriately in case our exporters are affected by any

restrictive straight measures from the united states that could hit iconic brands like harley davidson its motorcycles are reportedly on a retaliatory list that u. has drawn up to punish if steel quotas are introduced as well as american made bourbon whiskey those products were apparently chosen because they're made in the home states of influential legislators no one is talking about a trade war but there's little question that the pressure is mounting the e.u. is also worried by the new u.s. decision to radically sink corporate taxes emission to avoid firms moving their headquarters from europe to the u.s. and we'd like to avoid any slowdown of investment those are things we'll discuss that's important because what it comes down to is keeping jobs in europe. germany's acting finance minister said he hopes for support from people in the u.s. they continue to want a good relationship with brussels. as back of an outsider terry thanks

helena well here in germany the central f. social democrats have started voting on whether to enter a second coalition with i'm going to michael's conservatives party members have a little over a week to cast their ballots and the result will be announced on march fourth the deal has deeply divided yesterday's rank and file and it's a battle that's pitting the party establishment against its future leaders kevin kernot the leader of the party's youth wing is leading the rebellion against a new coalition he's been holding a series of meetings around the country party leaders have also been on the road trying to mobilize s.p.d. members to support a grand coalition. well done all right sick joins me now he's a social democrat who joined the s.p.d. party in november and opposes entering another coalition with chancellor merkel's conservatives thanks for being with us this morning daniel. tell us why have you decided to join the s.p.d. party now well my history with the s.p.

begin bringing nine hundred ninety when i was twelve years old it started to distribute stickers and balloons for the party but never been a member and after. money shaman said that when you have a ballad about the grand coalition i decided to go into the party and stay you went into the party in order to vote against another grand coalition is that right right against the grain coalition so you're campaigning for that you're up in opposition to the coalition do you believe that a majority of your fellow s.p.d. members will like yourself defy the party leadership and actually vote against forming another coalition with the conservatives do you think that vote will against it will happen. well i think we had a good chance until yesterday it was quite sure that we could win it but then. when
9:22 am
the media reported that the party in the polls beyond the way of de slipped the right wing if the party oh i'm hearing that there's a lot of fear. in the members and so they decide for you to vote for the going coalitional and i still think that it's going to be very short resolved so close very close ok what you would like to see is the s.p.d. go into opposition in parliament is that correct that's correct and that would basically trigger fresh elections of chancellor merkel doesn't have a new coalition partner either that or a minority. government which she hasn't really shown any any desire for do you think that given your party's slide in the polls that the chaos in the leadership is also that your party would actually do better in actions than it did last time around i think it's going to be hard if you go into the action with the same
9:23 am
program but if you set up a new program then there might be a chance because we have seen that since the just faction of the socialist state with the agenda twenty ten they have been half of the members leaving the party and we have just a quarter of the electors left to so if you go in with the same policy it's going to be the same result the agenda twenty ten being a set of labor market reforms and social welfare reforms under former chancellor gerhard schroeder from the s.p.d. very controversial in your party now the polls show your party losing ground to the right wing f.t. you just mentioned that how concerned are you that the social democrats in germany will become politically irrelevant like the socialists in press that won't happen. i'm quite sure about that because i think people in here know that we need a strong social democracy even if they don't vote for it right now because we have
9:24 am
to have a wrong program but if we have a program for the people who right now vote or who are going out of policy. not voting anymore if we regained these voters i think we can we gain power ten you all the best to you daniel right sick of the s.p.d. a brand new s.p.d. party member thanks for talking with us. well let's check out what's happening at the berlin film festival is going on right now yesterday saw a screening of gus van sant latest film don't worry you won't get far on foot it's based on the true story of a cartoonist battling disability and alcoholism it was a highly anticipated film at the belly knowledge but the excitement wasn't universal for what came phoenix and press conferences apparently not so good makes his media performance wasn't quite up to his acting performance when it came to promoting his new film doesn't like press conferences at all but it was
