cigars back in business. welcome to the business i'm going to give jones in berlin and we're starting with the most awaited decision here in germany banning diesel cars from inner cities is legal that's the verdict handed down today by germany's top administrative court a move that activists say is long overdue the ruling comes amid attempts to cut down on pollution levels dozens of german cities have emission levels that exceed your limits and germany is under pressure to bring them into compliance with the e.c. nor now diesel bans could prove problematic for german carmakers as market shares of diesel cars have grown rapidly in recent years up until almost fifty percent in twenty six. and joining me now for more on the ramifications of this verdict are my colleagues joins me here in the studio and
2:18 pm
horse and automotive analyst who joins us in london good to have both of you here with us on this topic and i would like to start with jenelle just briefly what exactly did the court decide well the broad strokes. of the verdict confirmed the legality of driving bans to be and to be imposed by melissa palate is in order for them to enforce their plans to fight air pollution now this could be a decision that affects up to seventy cities in germany if applied widely but you know as we know the devil be in the details so i guess we'll see ok so this ruling leaves room for interpretation. how much bite does it half. well i think it will have quite a lot of bite because the environmental agencies and lobby groups will now start suing on the cities to challenge their emission levels so that the industry together will have to come up with a solution these are retrofits costs or extend buyback programs for really

polluting cars needs to be seen it's going to pay for it needs to be seen so it has a very wide consequence and also the question comes up with more european cities very strongly brands as well ok we'll of course we have already some european cities who announced that they would introduce decent bands but much much later twenty twenty twenty twenty five the years that i discussed that would give also the german car industry janelle perhaps enough time to change their game plan right now this must be quite a blow well it is but at this stage they should have expected it i think the public discourse on air quality and human health has reached a particular turning point which they should have noticed and part of what they have to do now can be blamed on relative under reaction the past they could have really done more to avoid being in this position and as are inside they will probably have to respond to renewed calls for hardware fixes you know that they
2:20 pm
didn't want to do with us for the longest time because of the cost that that would entail anywhere would it be the solution because this is also a controversial solution that's been discussed it could be part of a range of solutions there is no there is no one size fits all solution for the scale of this problem so anything like very costly hardware fixes or a scrappage scheme that would allow a diesel owners to trade in older vehicles or probably also have to offer more models that bridge the gap from where we are now to mass electric vehicle adoption because we're just not there yet so maybe things like more hybrids ok so it leaves certainly room for development it demands that i know that you haven't been a fan of the diesel engine anyway do you think if this is now to the kiss of death for the technology which by the way here in germany is very very popular. well i can't say i'm not a fan of a diesel engine of use of myself right and we need to be very clear that these
2:21 pm
legends were what the european regulator wanted what the german regulator wanted but that tax system want to every one of these rules and here we are and we designed it is a test cycle that is just far away from reality that's the fact now i'm not a big fan of the future of diesel because i just really believe these laws has become too expensive to manufacture they're really an island technology for european consumers they don't sell anywhere else in the world so it's becoming too expensive and that money's not being ok didn't to electrify poetry's into a hybrid miles of fuel hybrids plug in hybrids and evey's these are global technologies and i think it's a good development that moving in that direction ok then i have one more question for both of you a short answer if you would so you say on tension driving a diesel yourself if you will here in germany there are a lot of confused confused diesel drivers out there what's the court ruling mean for them what it means for them if they have a euro five easel they will probably be offered
2:22 pm
a hans where fakes if they want to drive into cities if they drive an older diesel they will probably have to look to replace their car in the coming years if they have a euro sixty zero five right well i would say it would mean a future of restricted use and dropping resale values i'm surprised not more of them are more angry sure and certainly keep your eyes on the news and the developments there as i have them aloud from a business end in hostile from london thank you so much both to you. not surprisingly took at beating right after the verdict was announced daniel corp is joining us now in frankfurt to danielle how are investors coping. well how are they coping with all of this this morning there was still some hold but after the news were breaking we have seen shares of the big car makers dropping here on my and chairs of volkswagen b.m.w. and dima they are all down between zero point eight and one point four per cent of
2:23 pm
course this could be way worse but we also have to remember how many billions of euros in the equity market have been already lost during the diesel gate scandal of course the car industry was alerted we're already getting statements from business associations all purpose also representing smaller businesses or all kinds of negative a effect this could have for the economy and one thing is also sure even though shares were not dry jumping or going down dramatically the value off of diesel maybe standing at home right now has dropped more than their share price of the comic us today all right in front of thank you so much. making our already very smart phones even smarter now that is something that is harder and harder to do and that is why many say the real innovation at this year's mobile world congress is the tech network that keeps us connected the term on everyone's lips in barcelona is five g.

this german antenna maker expects five g. will be rocket fuel for their business the new cellular masts can handle massive data volumes without any frustrating lag the finish network supplier nakia is in barcelona showing off how five thousand data streams can flow seamlessly the company says they're ready to master the torrents of data expected from the networks of the future between all kinds of devices you will be much higher than we've had in connection technologies so far. if the waves of new fangled tech leave you feeling lost at sea you might want to downgrade you can pick up calls with a touch of your thumb just like the forerunners to the smartphone forget three d. and five g. this phone can make calls and not much else but even that has its own charm. sometimes a cigar is only a cigar but for cuba it's also a key exports up despite. growing demand from china. an icon

of cuba no not fidel castro his cigar something the communist dictator had in common with u.s. president john f. kennedy who ordered twelve hundred cuban studies before blockading the island during the cold war. ties aren't quite so bad nowadays but the economic boycott is still in place so cuba has to look elsewhere for exports that's good news for aficionados in countries like canada for them anything but a cuban is close but no cigar as far as the passion or the dedication. of the cigar it's really crafted in cuba which is different from any place else it's really the place to be is heaven as annual cigar festival which draws visitors from fifty countries to place orders and sample latest offerings and more and more of those sales are headed for china. the government sells its a car through a panos it's a joint venture with britain's imperial tobacco and this year it hit

a milestone. they've been in terms of worldwide sales no scruple reached the historic figure of five hundred million dollars for the first time with twelve percent growth compared to twenty sixteen at a constant exchange rate it's a spectacular result. so cuba's cigar sales are on a roll even if its neighbor to the north isn't buying.
