this is deja news coming to you live from berlin germany says hackers in training trades are some of the government's most sensitive networks of media and of course investigators still don't know the extent of the breach rushing tackles are believed to have launched them the cyber attacks a group that's apparently hit political targets before also coming up she succeeded rest so many others have failed to president trump loses one of his longest serving most trusted aides cakes is resigning from a job as communications director. and could this man's terrorist plots have been
11:01 am
stopped to be judgment all makers are looking to learn from mistakes made in the run up to the two thousand and sixteen christmas market attack and stop future terrorists in their tracks. on the program a chilling new smuggler shakes the vaucluse political establishment to its core his last article alleges links to the italian mafia at the highest levels of government we take a look at the fallout after the explosive claims published. hello and welcome i'm on the thought she. we start in germany where authorities say hackers have in for created some of the country's most sensitive computer networks media reports say a cyber attack targeted the targeting the foreign and defense ministries was likely
11:02 am
going on for more than a year and continued as late as wednesday security agencies detected and started monitoring the breach in december a group with links to the russian government is thought to be responsible the interior ministry has given very few details so far just a brief statement sources say russian hackers have been trying to attack the government they planted spying software that could have tapped sensitive data the hackers apparent targets were the foreign and defense ministry as they searched for information about russia and ukraine lawmakers are not asking why they heard nothing in their intelligence briefings even though the agencies apparently knew about the breach. to have said nothing possibly for months which is what we have to clarify it's completely unacceptable we're waiting intelligence on the reason something i cannot make sense of this is a clear violation of the law. refers to night we see germany is clearly not well
11:03 am
prepared for cyber attacks it can't be interpreted in any other way as russian hackers appear to be going and i have the foreign and defense ministries for tardiness ministerial i don't always. cyber attacks against german authorities are nothing new insiders say the government server is attacked more than a thousand times a day the government already sounded warnings about russian hacking last year. you know we have notice that time and again german parties german politicians and individuals have been subject to cyber attacks by the hacking group a p t twenty eight or other collectives that we would associate with russian service providers. i would like to take the opportunity to again make unmistakably clear that germany does not tolerate spying activities or intelligence operations of any kind by any country. that came after an attack against the german
11:04 am
government allegedly controlled from moscow it said this new breach could have been even more sophisticated and dangerous but this is a real threat a virtual war is taking place against germany possibly with the help of russian intelligence services we now need clarity. but for now you the government is remaining tight lipped about this latest attack even as parliamentarians demand answers. and joining to discuss this issue is a dog is a member of parliament for germany's opposition left body and with me in the studio is a modern shows of the expert for cyber security at the german think tank as well welcome to both of you if we start with you muchas the how do you explain the fact that one of germany's best protected networks has been hacked while protecting government network is really hard to do especially if you're operating against
11:05 am
a really skillful and resourceful actor that has time as a referee patient looking for weaknesses and you have to consider that these government networks are used by thousands of people on a daily basis opening e-mail attachments and doing their business and therefore it's really easy to penetrate an e-mail and get into the system ok let me turn to you know it's believed that the russian hacking group a p t twenty eight wasn't always known as pham seabeck i doubt this attack is any confirmation as yet of this . no we do not have a confirmation for that we don't know exactly what it actually was this group it's very likely but we also do not know whether it really is a russian group it's very very difficult to prove where hacker attacks come from and it's actually very easy to hide the origins now apparently the authorities knew that some kind of cyber. safety had been breached back in december it says but the
11:06 am
government did not make it public earlier why. well that's a very interesting questions and we as members of parliament are more than disappointed because we do know know that since december the attack has been no one within the authorities and no member of parliament has been informed and this is clearly a scandal we have to have you know formed immediately about such an attack and i'm also really shocked that for over a year as the suspect now this attack has been going on without anybody in the authorities noticing it. much is telling to you because that is they difficult to find and read this attack is coming from who was responsible the speculation is it is the twenty eight group do you share her assessment yeah i would be really careful with pointing fingers right now because we haven't seen any concrete evidence that it is indeed the same active group it is possible that these are the
11:07 am
same actors but we don't know for sure whether they will blame for actually the early attack which took place of the german bundestag bottom and back in two thousand and fifteen that is right but this does not necessarily imply any connection of course it's likely but we don't know yet and i would be really careful pointing fingers right now so why is it so difficult to establish where this attack has come from because it's easy to miss manipulate digital traces of the malware that is used could contains a language sample from different countries that could be forged you could forge timestamps in the malware so it's rather easy for a skilled actor at least to forge the traces and we've seen this all over the place false flag operations you know as an actor operating under the guise of someone else so this identity is very like it happens all the time and briefly how was this attack different from the one in two thousand and fifteen in technical terms we don't know yet we have to see it's probably similar in the engine intrusion back to the spear phishing e-mail was used but we don't yet know how do you i mean what do
11:08 am
you say is it's very difficult to protect any kind of network from gun these kind of attacks what do you think the government should be doing to protect its internet security. one start would be to actually concentrate all these being scarse resources on actual defense right now we invest a lot of money and also personal resources into developing an attack capacity the intelligence services actually a buy and see. security lou paulson software to use them not to close them and keeping those security holes open makes our entire infrastructure actually rolled why it makes it attackable for third parties so it would be the first step to do that but we also need more buy chips for defense we need more buy chips for a reason soft therefore updated software we very often find in public services and
11:09 am
public authorities outdated software packages these very often contain a lot of security back doors and this is a danger and we also have not enough competence amongst the civil agents who work on those authorities basics like how safe are your passwords and how do we behave and you'll find u.s.b. stick on them parking lots and things like that and the other what i find difficult to understand given that the bundestag was attacked in two thousand and fifteen why i want these steps or at least a substantial number of steps taken to ensure the security of a job the networks this is one of a question we will suddenly ask the government when we will have. the special conversations on the committee of the for example this afternoon and yes that's a valid question and it has to be asked that has to be answered. right to beg

correspondent daniel colgan frankford dale keeps losing money is there any chance that the company will actually reach the goals that have been set by the new ownership. yeah that's a big question even though investors were prepared for even higher losses many of them have doubts that opel will be able to do their homework because the goal of p.s.a. from france is very clear and. twenty twenty the company needs to be profitable again and when you look at the numbers i guess you really have to be optimistic to believe this opel has tried already in many areas mostly when it comes to the production process to lower their very high costs also to save money when developing new cars such as the new version of their cores or about all of this still with very little success p.s.a. is known to be patient at the beginning but also known to react quickly when something goes really wrong four thousand already since the beginning of this year
11:20 am
on reduced working hours and they only have a job guarantee until the very end of this year now you've been in touch with opel employees how's the mood among them and how's the new leadership from france being viewed. while they are divided some have told me that there is really hope inside of the company the problem with g.m. was that for them g.m. never really understood the european market very well p.s.a. a company from europe knows exactly what the european customer wants but there is this fear what is going to happen after twenty eighteen and even after twenty twenty if opel doesn't come back into the winning zone when you look over to the u.k. and the production facilities of vauxhall for example more than two hundred fifty employees have already lost their jobs so i guess very uncertain time at the moment for the employees german carmaker opel keeps losing money then your cope reporting from frankfurt thank you. and staying with the automotive sector the world's
