7:04 pm
a car with gunmen arriving close to the military headquarters afterwards there was a big explosion gunshots started later on the gunmen appeared to have moved to the french embassy to attack the french embassy ok the government is now calling the incident a terrorist attack what evidence is there to suggest that it might have been. all exactly the government already said that's also the police chief of work i do said they treat the case as a suspected islam is attack and it is indeed very likely because you know foster has seen a rise in islamistic terror attacks over the past two years last year there was an attack on the restaurant nineteen people were killed two years ago there was an attack and we're going to go on the hotel thirty people go to killed including many foreigners and it's important to know that spoke enough foster was actually considered to be a very peaceful a very stable country in a region that is very volatile but that changed when the longtime president campari
7:05 pm
was actually chased out of his office in two thousand and fourteen by angry protesters after that there was no political stability in the country any longer there was also fails attempted coup d'etat and this political instability was also used by terrorists terrorists to attack targets in the country. adrian you mentioned the two previous attack in as many years how prepared are security forces to deal with attacks like this one. well today it appears there was a very quick attack response by the security forces both special forces from book enough ah so they were also supported by special forces from friends who were based in the country but generally one has to say look you know faso is one of the poorest countries in that region and it's very difficult for them to cope with such threats and of course international cooperation is necessary and it has already started a member of the g five psagot group a group that was initiated by friends also heavily supported by the german
7:06 pm
government in order to combat the threats of terrorists in the entire region they had a conference last month where donor countries pledged five hundred million dollars in support of the attacks today clearly showed that this support is highly need it is your increase in lago thank you. to syria now western powers are ramping up pressure on damascus in a bid to end the plight of suffering civilians tens of thousands of them remain trapped in the besieged rebel enclave of eastern guta as syrian government air strikes continue the leaders of the united states germany and france say the assad regime must be held accountable for bombing civilians and blocking desperately needed aid the u.n. has called for a thirty day cease fire humanitarian window to allow relief to reach the millions the bodies human rights council has planned an emergency session later today to
7:07 pm
address the crisis. joining us now from oslo is yuan egeland secretary general of the norwegian refugee council and the head of the u.n. humanitarian task force for syria mr egeland thank you very much for taking this time what is the situation on the ground in eastern guta at the moment as you know it. this situation is horrific on the ground there is no no other word for it listen this is a besieged area it's totally military and so and the hasn't been any possibility to get in with humanitarian relief now for months only one tiny convoy came in february that's the only thing we've gotten in since november of last year so mad nutrition has gone through the roof at the time when hospitals saw being bombed. civilian housing is being
7:08 pm
bombed and it's happening in oh next door to the city these are suburbs to damascus of course there is also in or fairness we have to describe they're also going rockets out of this eastern gudrun neighborhoods that is hitting a city it's a terrible situation so the consideration continues as it was before the u.n. called for this thirty day cease fire and then russia back that well but also called their own daily five hour truce what do you make of this. the that the situation is only getting worse by the hour and the day in spite of all of this tremendous diplomatic activity we've had in geneva now. you know dozens of meetings with the the russians the americans with the local powers like iran saudi arabia qatar turkey and we're not getting anywhere at the moment the security
7:09 pm
council declared a thirty day ceasefire and now off the many days into this so called ceasefire period the war got worse the russian proposal is a unilateral one in russia is fighting alongside the assad government what they say is that the five hour should be human a temple system to enable civilians to go out we've seen no civilians go out of these two corridos in the five hour process because they're too short they're too brief we need longer process and we need also to be negotiated between the two sides and between us as humanitarians if not we cannot deliver aid in we cannot take it medical evacuations out and we cannot really ensure that civilians are

saith if they want to free the area you mention that russia has called this unilateral ceasefire speaking with representatives from various countries what hope do you have that the situation will actually improve. well we have to continue hoping and we have to continue fighting for for an improvement in the situation when we don't have the luxury of giving up here too many lives are are at stake so hopefully the the the very fact that this is on the highest level your your chancellor merkel president mccaw i have been directly in contact with president putin of russia we've we've seen intensive diplomatic attention to this so i can only hope that if it changes but it takes the government then to to give the green light to aid convoys in it takes the government and the

allied forces to really want to have a cease fire and then it takes for the local groups inside also to respect. a cease fire several groups inside and we also need their cooperation the head of the un humanitarian task force for syria mr yon eglin thank you very much thank you the final day of campaigning before italy goes to the polls and sunday's fiercely contested election don't legally barred from government former prime minister silvio berlusconi is hoping to play kingmaker in a right wing coalition our correspondent max health might have been to sicily or berlusconi's message on migration is dominating the debate. father and knows this neighborhood like no one else. has taken me to the old market and institution in old town palermo i'm trying to
7:12 pm
get a feel for what matters to people in this election migration seems to be at the top of the list. the tone of the current campaign what is very harsh about it i'm afraid that the topic of migration is being exploited from the left and from the right these people don't understand the value of migrants and migration that can bring into a country then they need to get in and you get to. this is really has always been an island between two continents many africans that make it to europe spend a lot of time here some learn italian in charity sponsored classes like this one right next to the market hoping to be granted asylum others move on. there are approximately five hundred thousand undocumented migrants in italy and

one man italians are very familiar with this calling the situation a social time bomb. that man is signal bell is calling the former prime minister and billionaire eighty one years old and the centerpiece of many scandals involving among other things an underage call girl named ruby and tax fraud yet there is a good possibility she will be forging the next governing coalition once again that would be one leaning strongly to the right capitalizing on the current anti immigration in italy. in spite of his checkered past fellow party members think he's italy's best hope for reforms. or you could lose in the woods at the bank. going to school he has extensively proving his dedication in the past he's a good businessman he has achieved a lot for himself and his partners and the strength of purpose and his passion are

migrants and are you going to do this when the obvious on. his allies are very tough and want to get rid of migrants this is a demand that's completely outside of reality. forty a lot of. my impression is reality has never seemed to be a big concern of bella's going to these especially in campaigns and especially regarding migration. and as we just saw silvio berlusconi is hoping to make a stunning political comeback and he's announced his pick to take italy's top job berlusconi says antonio chaotic the european parliament president has agreed to serve as prime minister if the center right coalition wins on sunday to jani and berlusconi have been allies since the pair set up a force that it's halley a party in the early one nine hundred ninety s.
7:16 pm
. i'm now joined by philip bell and is an author and journalist who's been living in rome for more than thirty years philip let's start with a ani berlusconi has him on board to head up his patchwork coalition are we talking about the next prime minister of italy and if so what can we expect yes i think if anyone has a good chance to tell you and he is the man at the moment. seems like a good choice from his point of view a way of reassuring people in europe that. the new center right government won't be yeah hardline and it's a euro skepticism would be breaching a european rules so. he is there is a reassuring choice both for the rest of europe and probably also for conservative centrist moderate voters that in italy and we've seen the role that immigration is playing in this nationwide debate berlusconi calls migrants a social time bomb as we heard in max's report is this issue now completely
7:17 pm
drowning out other concerns italians may have. not quite certainly the most emotionally inflammatory theme of the election and it is the net top of the agenda really from very early on but they're out there related to the mns such as unemployment and security people blaming. migrants for the lack of both both these things like jobs and the lack of security so there's a feeling of. general distress happiness and frustration especially in the south of italy and this could. significant impact on the choices that people make on sunday ok so there is some frustration there but let's talk about berlusconi from out because to the rest of the world he's a scandal ridden politician who we thought we'd seen the end of can you explain to
7:18 pm
us why he has such support within italy. well there by this time his really very intelligently reinvented himself and he now appears as a reassuring elder statesman a far cry from their early times the bunga bunga parties and his conviction for tax fraud and he now streitz the political scene as the man who no other world leader is or has there or a reassuring and moderate approach to where policy yeah murders approach to europe in particular and basically someone that italian second their ally rely on and he's been making much of the inexperienced of many of his rivals particularly the five star movement to tend to be young and of it many of them have never had any experience of government at all philip dillon in rome thank you
7:19 pm
sticking with italy now javier joins that's at how the italian economy could play a key role in the election fund have here you know the old saying abbi what decides the election it's the economy stupid so it does make sense to take a look at where italy stands right now another country is on the road to recovery but big challenges remain the national debt level as one hundred thirty percent of g.d.p. there are several banks struggling with bad loans and europe's largest number of people living in poverty isn't nearly so who can offer solutions for voters and what do they want here's what we heard. yes but i don't expect much. more. think something could change but it depends on which coalition wins i'm not sure if they'll be a clear winner most likely they'll have to compromise and reach a broader agreement. will there be a clear winner could it take months for a new government to come together. watching their smartphones the election is

mostly being fought online all parties are promising more money. even proposing a universal basic income. but even the unions balk at that. frank i mean i honestly find the idea to introduce a universal basic income exaggerated this would allow any italian citizen to have an income but it would be too expensive because that bit of. italy is still feeling some of the effects of the global recession banks are still struggling with mountains of bad debt and whilst luxury apartments of the rich tower ostentation over milan eight million italians live in poverty some one and a half million mainly young and highly qualified people have left the country since the recession yet a ten percent unemployment here is still above the e.u. average some observers warn that a far greater problem is lurking in the background poll say that eighty percent of

the electorate simply don't trust the state. so another big topic this week after the u.s. announced new import tariffs on steel and aluminum this thursday we keep seeing worldwide we actions now the world trade organization has expressed concern at washington's plants w t o director general roberto us who have all said the potential for escalation is real and that a trade war was in no one's interest let's remind everyone u.s. president donald trump wants to slap a twenty five percent levy on steel and ten percent on aluminum imports the move has sent stock markets plummeting u.s. trading partners say they'll and post trade counter measures. china is the u.s. his main target with the tariffs for years the country has been overproducing steel and aluminum and selling it off dumping prices donald trump has been moaned this for some time blaming china for the loss of tens of thousands of jobs in his country. but beijing is less than impressed with this response it's already
7:22 pm
threatening retaliator a measure has officially though the tone remains diplomatic. so wanting to me for china urges the u.s. to show restraint in using protective trade measures and respect multilateral trade rules. trump's meeting with the u.s. steel companies left open whether the tariffs would focus on just one country or on all steel and aluminum imports generally the result worldwide insecurity even among america's closest allies. this morning we don't have clarity from the administration about whether a law exemption will be in place for straw and whether or not this will be a unilateral imposition of cowards across the board the e.u. is threatening countermeasures if european steel production is affected by the terrorists it says it will retaliate with tariffs on u.s.
7:23 pm
products including motorcycles and whiskey we will not sit idly while our industry is hit with them for measures that were thousands of european jobs at risk the e.u. reacted firmly and commensurately to different our interests consumers will be the biggest losers of course in the us the terrorists will mean more expensive cars and elsewhere more expensive u.s. products. ok it's a big topic and to help us understand it better i'm now joined by hogwash needing chief economist at the unbacked thank you very much for joining us and for trying to explain the effects of all this and we know. terrorists or new we don't know much about them yet but what's your first impression what do you make of them first of all i think this is indeed an escalation of the creeping protectionism that we've had so far this is not just one little target. one ten dumping against us does it country this is
7:24 pm
a broader issue and this is pretty negative however even if these tariffs are slapped on or u.s. imports of stephen and aluminum it would not be a major direct impact we would barely notice it in the economic statistics for the us or for europe having said that the confidence shattering effect of this could be more sivia this might dent business confidence especially in exporting nations like germany and many of the european countries because we don't know what risks they might face in the future as well first because we don't know what the risks there might face in the future and secondly because there might be this feeling that there could be a tit for tat sequence of events and uncertainty is bad for business this introduces a different kind of uncertainty from what we've had before and speaking of that tit for tat now europe has already said or at least has said that europe must respond to this but they are clearly against
7:25 pm
a trade war so what what position does europe sees itself in now must they also introduce tariffs now to some products we've heard harley davidson or whiskey or should they just let the stay economically it would make sense to not retaliate at all because any retaliation would make imports no expensive for consumers having said that this is also a political gain and in political terms probably europe doesn't want to project itself as a symbol victim that can't go back and we tell you the best political response would probably be to retaliate but to have a root. allegation which is. that what the u.s. has done so to not escalate it but try to deescalate it a bit so we're seeing the political and economical aspects your let's talk about the u.s. again because we know that donald trump is keeping a promise here at least but you already said that the effect is not going to be that big of the economy anyway so do you think this is just
7:26 pm
a merely political issue for him it is mostly political of course use try to impress his babies and he's doing it at a time when the u.s. and the global economy is pretty strong so initially the damage the direct economic damage will be very limited having said that this sets a bad precedent this is a bet for confidence and it would be very good if all sides now try to deescalate things instead of escalating it much further you will see those reactions unfold in the coming days thank you very much oh gosh meeting at the on back for the analysis . biologists researching penguin colonies in the antarctic have had a pleasant surprise they have unexpectedly discovered one and a half million adelie penguins on the danger islands it was previously known that the penguin species lived there but their numbers had been greatly underestimated

points on the table over he have six and that has a lot to do with the fact they went four games without a goal was the folly of zebra and last weekend against an over that might of course given the confidence to open the floodgates and school lots of goals but i honestly think it was a false dawn they were not going be any goes with lots of nights and tonight is braman game to either win or at least get a drill ok any earlier you mentioned like think versus dorman there's a lot of history there isn't there absolutely there's a lot of animosity especially between the fans primarily from the dogma fans the lots of fans now in favor of last year i was it a particular game in dortmund that i so don't want throwing stones spitting and swearing at leipsic fans as they walked towards the stadiums as the horrific scenes to be perfectly honest now has a lot to do with the fact that dortmund do not see lives as a proper football club they see them as a giant billboard for an energy drinks company. and so on and so through injury they've played each other three times life so you've won twice the fans are not happy about that but that was under the old coaching regime you've got peter bergen now in charge adult men he hasn't lost a game in the bundesliga with goldman since taking over and this is their chance to be privileged to get that maiden win in leipsic that they so desperately yearn for ok moving away from the blandest league out of video replay issue could potentially

change top your football and potentially the world cup the summer absolutely the mean the seams are about to see it's change the flow and the spontaneity of a football and seen about sea of china so you can choose a player who got sent off in the fourth minute on match day for a foul which probably he wouldn't have been sent off or in previous season because the referee now has an actual set of eyes these players not getting just isn't made against them which is of course makes the game farah but it slows the game down you have to wait sixty seventy seconds and so this isn't decisions made and has a fundamental effect on the game what's happening tomorrow is that as i fabens national football association would then decide whether or not to have all forms of football and if they agree to if they want to do it then we'll have the world cup and johnny has said that once the world cup is presenting to be a blanket v.a. offer all sports and within a year and a half i can see it in old top football leagues taking a lot more time to watch football games and mechanic klein thank you for that. now the darker the night the brighter the light that could certainly be the motto

sure because if this is and whether it's nice to call it a creature movie but such movies never won best film at the oscars. and the other reason so i think it might not win there are two of the films i mean we've got to remember the current climate in hollywood that made two of the times up campaigns and this may influence the voting towards two other films this one is rebuttal boards outside of big missouri a very strong female lead in that that's written and directed by martin mcdonagh who's one of my favorite directors he directed in bruges one of my favorite films there's also a lady which is directed by graphic girl wigs so let's have a look first of all. still. wonder. your whole world's i'm going to matter what we're going to show.

i don't know what the police are doing. to tell you this i've heard an awful life and since i put the billboard. for you billboards outside of being misuari features a standout performance from frances mcdormand as a woman seeking justice who was raped and killed. taken to rest they're going to them to rest too for. i had some food and give it to you i got a center it is in my kill you the kind of point. just go to city college you know with your work just go to city college and then and then back to city college and then maybe. not expect everybody. is that you were given. i gave it to myself it's given to me by me ladybird is an endearing coming of age movie starring sharon as a strong willed teenager who refuses to accept people's expectations.

you won't feel like you know your mom totally. this end. incidentally ladybug direct aggressive is nominated for best director if she wins it lead to be the second win for a female director in the ninety year legend of also of oscars the only posed when before any females were vote was katherine bigelow the locker of course personally watching for that thousand fantastic actresses in that monterey we just saw who's up for best actress who is going to win i think is one of the three we've seen i mean i think it's sally hopkins of course in the shape of water. so sharon and wonderful performance in lady i go for frances mcdormand in three bravo's i think she'll win best actress but up male counterparts. i think it's almost

a foregone conclusion but we should mention daniel day lewis who's won more best actor. because than anybody else he won three so don't be greedy down your. he said it's his last film as well but i don't think he well another daniel daniel stars in. however traditionally best actor oscars don't go to young actors and of course there is of course gary oldman i think gary oldman is the hot favorite for the oscar his performance of churchill in darkest hour it is a tool to force a back saying he is a great actor and it's a travesty that gary oldman has never got an oscar he's going to get this film have the. what role do you who. will call it that from the norm or is it me. i would.
7:52 pm
roll i spent time in this of i think and think happy about. but. no one can even recognize him in that film. of the make up guys go to with the oscars as well as anything else that we should be looking out for and well within the culture department all rooting for willem de to win the best supporting actor because he was short. while ago in berlin but in and his he's best for us in the florida projects and he talked to us about his role in that and it's a very interesting low budget film and he's a great success. you know we would be filming in the actual location where the story takes place so we'd also be the story that we're telling is about

a world that exists of basically the hidden homeless people living long term temporarily in this budget motel in the shadow of disneyland and for me it was a challenge to be able to pass passes are not there i kind of when people watch the movie they have to forget i'm an actor that's sort of always the case but in this case it was a particular challenge. now finally rob you mentioned greg earlier what's going happen there well i'm no fan of boston but as i've said three billboards are kohl's and we mustn't forget game of the toro for the sake of water but if he wins the best director oscar they might as well rename it the best mexican director oscar because in twenty fourteen. one it for gravity and twenty fifteen in order to
