hermel well that is now just been averted and the reaction was complete silence in the room even from those people who've been counting those results although you know one could argue they they were up all night so they certainly must be very tired but there really was no. sense of surprise or excitement over relief asking this and so why is it that there was no way action actually that there was so much riding on the line here. well you heard it i mean that was also the first question to all of so it seems the interim head of the party until a new leader is elected and he basically i mean there was no instruction for anyone not not to show any kind of reaction. so this is somewhat puzzling but my reading of it would be that really nobody had seriously anticipated the idea that there would be such a shock surprise which would have really been ranging in that category of grex it in the election of donald trump in the u.s.

i mean that's the kind of stock to the system it would have been here in germany and also across europe so i daresay that reactions in other places across europe would have been much stronger than in the place where it actually took place so that's just a very odd kind of. turn of events here but what we certainly did see is a stronger support than to spend two thirds last time in twenty thirteen was more than three quarters so. quite clearly the party base wasn't that keen on this they made that known they made that but there also was a larger turnout than last time around so certainly this is something that has energized the party either way you look at it and. the head of the s.p.d. party was also keen to point out that this was a democratic process that he feels is now energized the party not just to go into this renewed coalition this continuation of the coalition. german chancellor angela
2:02 pm
merkel but he's also hoping that it will give them the strength to launch this process of renewal that also is a standing process from the past you just have to that party base which saw and kevin the head of the young social democrats who led the campaign against the growth code the so-called grand coalition he will remain the spearhead for that renew it will be very interesting what the manages to bind him into this process that's certainly coming here. as you said i think was about seventy eight percent of the party members that ended up participating in this vote so that indeed does give the party a bit of strength but this was also one of the questions to the acting head of the party offshore says you know with around sixty six percent voting in favor of this government is this party really going to come closer together as he is saying it will going forward. well the question really is can it be divided any further than we've seen recently and you can look at it from from two different directions and
2:03 pm
what i find really interesting is that there was stronger support than there was amongst delegates at that party conference that we saw a couple of weeks ago that was only fifty six percent it was seen as an indicator for what could be expected when you asked the party grassroots there was a genuine interest the patient an expectation that the party grassroots would be more critical then those delegates who came who were felt to be perceived to be a group of people who would feel more of a sense of duty toward stabilizing the party while that simply wasn't the case clearly two thirds of the party base were prepared to put their hopes on this team and put their hopes on a renewed government with angela merkel who is seen as someone who's pretty much bruised and battered this party which is still embroiled in internal debates about not just the direction but also who will be leading who will become a minister and that will be the next big question that was also put to say he said
2:04 pm
that the party would now take the time it needs frankly these debates certainly would have gone on at least behind closed doors but we are due to learn over the course of the next week who the social democrats will send into the six ministries that they secured amongst them the foreign ministry of course and that key finance ministry he was also asked whether he would be prepared to be finance minister he certainly being tipped as being potential finance minister he wouldn't really be drawn on that at all and the big question of course is whether the current acting foreign minister can stay in place he's deeply unpopular within the party leadership so he's not really expected to remain german foreign minister because of that at the same time he carney is the most popular politician here in germany so having avoided that live of no votes now having the strength and the backing to go into a grand coalition the debating is certainly not over. the social democrats i think that the the potential fighting is just really coming to
2:05 pm
a head on who will be going into those ministries but we did learn that they will have three men and three women going into i'm going to michael's cabinet so we might actually see a fifty fifty male female cabinet here in germany that's went. well it is now official the social democrats will enter this next german government with a chance america and we're just listening to mr they're looking at the numbers simon and you know there were around three hundred sixty eight thousand votes that were valid from party members around two hundred thirty nine nine thousand voted yes it was around one hundred twenty three thousand who voted against what are your reactions from those numbers and also what we saw this complete lack of reaction of applause of any sort of reaction yet i don't know what that was about i suppose people just kind of many of them been up all night of course involved in this counting process and higher this morning. but yet as has been said you know this is. an unexpectedly clear vote in favor and that would be
2:06 pm
a huge relief to under the knowledge the designated party leader and the other senior members of the s.p.d. and two others looking on as micaela was saying you know this has not been a vote in favor of the s.p.d. leadership it's purely been about the question is it smart to join anglo-american government. you know with all the compromises that that inevitably will mean and all the. lost opportunities to attack the medical and conservatives that that will inevitably mean or would it have been better somehow to go into a position where you can obviously be freer in what you would say and possibly the process of renewing the party's ideological base would have worked better but of course. at around sixteen percent. popular support for that party at the moment they would risk uniformly ever further into irrelevance that's the clear choice
2:07 pm
they've made they've clearly jumped back from the idea that opposition is somehow a good thing you know let's get your take it's good for the social democrats and good for germany well i think the fact that the people are not that relieved is that is that they did s.p.d. members are not relieved is that they see a lot of new problems coming at them again as simon already said this is going to be fairly difficult row found themselves is going to be very difficult to have credible leadership in the in the near flu future i think the relief at the seed you had quarters is much bigger they've probably applauded their very loudly i guess so and i was also wondering about martin shoes saying this is great for all renewal process this is the acting out of school and yes actually if this is the start of the new unity i didn't see this new unity in the in the in the results necessarily for me the results show that the s.p.d. have a lot of work ahead of them like they did in the last coalition old their main political

points the day used to drop in the first year and then the last three years they were actually in the visible at that time so. you know they've dave the party leadership in a few huge pressure and they will steal a storage like very eager to do a profile on themselves and usually for social democrats not only in germany but also in other european countries tends to go wrong but even if they were in a clapping here in berlin they might have been in brussels and we have our correspondent bob of a still awaiting there for us barbara any first reactions you're hearing there. no first reactions yet however we can assume there has been in the at the head of the european union a huge sigh of relief of those because of course everybody here has been waiting with bated breath and sort of watching this there's a decent turnout struggles within the social democrats and the big question will
