yes sean into her cabinet he's going to be the health minister he's the the leading critic among the young younger generation of medical isn't particularly of the migration policy because of his left wing position that she's had generally. and so what she's done she's brought him into government and she's given him a really tricky portfolio because health very detailed and in the coalition agreement it says you know what we're trying to do is to make it fairer socializing more you know balance out contributions things that probably go rather against against bones instincts and he's going to have to work out a way to position himself as still a critic of medical a loyal member of the government on the was to be to be out an easier for the state so. that's sort of power play if you like at the top level that you don't quite often see in that sort of transparency in german politics as europe says exciting
3:01 pm
times and i'm a forward to it as they say keep your friends close in your enemies closer not a bad move then from chancellor merkel to bring her biggest critic into a cabinet for our viewers just tuning in to remind you we're bringing us special coverage of an announcement that paves the way for forming a new german government the social democrats have voted yes to teaming up once again with uncle michael conservatives to form a new so-called grand coalition to for third of s.p.d. members voted in favor of this coalition deal that was hammered out by their party leaders and by going to conservatives the chancellor herself can breathe a thigh of relief more than five months after the election the uncertainty is finally over the new government could be in place in less than two weeks time and it was a long tense wait at the s.p.v. headquarters this morning but then the head of the party's election committee had the results let's listen to what he said. as a result of that had me votes cast votes in favor of one on the two hundred sixteen

and. nine thousand six hundred and four votes others against one hundred twenty three thousand three hundred twenty nine dollars of the s.p.d. and. sixty six point zero two percent of vote cast were in favor of inspections of. thirty three point nine eight percent of the vote cast were against. well there have been some early reactions from chancellor merkel's own party. who is the thing finance minister and i'm glad michael's long term chief of staff in the chancery tweeting let's get to work germany and europe and of course there was that relief in brussels here muscovy the european commissioner for economic and financial affairs tweeting congratulations to my s.p.d. friends for the responsible one decisive vote germany is now ready to engage for a stronger europe and on that note we do have our correspondent i believe barbara
3:03 pm
vessel with us who has been following all of this for us in brussels and barbara if you can hear us is this correct then that that sentiment from pierre moscovici that germany is now ready to engage for a stronger europe. germany is ready to do that and i mean america is ready to do that and everybody has known it because of course the document that was most read in brussels and in other european capitals of course particularly in paris was the coalition agreement that everybody said are right there's a real cry to a lot of europe in there is often also the promise of more money from germany that is for many european countries one of the main points and the other main point for many rypien is the exit of. the old finance minister who has really helped the purse strings very tight over many years and when we talk for instance to some greek representatives earlier run the time when the coalition agreement was

written they said yes it's wonderful everything is good as long as that old politics of really very tight fiscal policy is gone so there are a lot of expectations but also some have been aching to sort of contradict in a certain way are our political analyst you up in the studio because he said that no monreal mark wrong is sort of the driving force in europe and i'm going to driving around in diesel and sort of like a relatively techie car that might be the case but she has always been working behind the scenes she has never been as we all know a great speaker i mean her is not the high flown rhetoric that mccrone is so apt at so we will see sort of like this divided pickler microgram who go around and hold great speeches and sort of take center stage and beside him america will be doing
3:05 pm
the work and will be pulling the strings as she has always done and the steps that we are going to take in the direction of reform in europe will be smallish tentative steps so there will be no. evolution we will go just very slowly forward we will first see for instance a fund for for the crises in the european union in the euro zone is so that's the first step and then the more the deeper political steps that will take a little while so i think it what we see on the surface is not what is really happening behind the scenes in europe. well certainly as you said barbara a lot of people relieved there in brussels today let's take a closer look now at what some of those issues are that are still up in the air between germany and europe. germany is under mounting pressure without a government and the european union isn't moving forward fast enough for the french
3:06 pm
president's agenda and europe has to wait with him. if you want to forge a compromise at european level you need to have a strong german government in place i think that there are two real tough issues which need to be settled. paris want to strongly formed the euro zone with its own budget and an e.u. finance minister but until now there's been no concrete response from. there is pressure coming also from paris because next year we will have the european parliament elections bret's that is going to come into the final moments of a new institutional cycle of european but you need solutions before that time is running out for. you without a common approach between paris and berlin the division between eastern and western europe could widen even further this is going to be a very difficult issue to tackle but with the pressure from paris and berlin
3:07 pm
jointly putting pressure on others who are less ready more hesitant i think a compromise that was passed defense is another issue paris wants to advance more pragmatic cooperation at the e.u. level france is willing to give up some sovereignty it wants a solid partnership of germany as britain prepares to leave the. car will have to wait for germany to come through on this too for the period of time in which there was no government in place that oversee did not make stronger but rather weaker. germany can still make up for lost time the government coalition agreement mentions the e.u. more than one hundred times now europeans are anxious to see those words translated to action ok so barbara looking at that just very quickly what do you think the biggest priority is going to be moving forward for brussels. the biggest priority of course is to deliver some reforms for france to sort of bolster. the french president the next biggest is of course the brics negotiations and then of course
3:08 pm
as we have heard the division between eastern and western european countries so paris and berlin really have to link their arms and really sort of stay very close together on that because that is the most divisive political issue at the moment and they will have to handle it very cleverly all right you have these barbara vessel in brussels michelle that is now has been following all of this of the s.p.d. headquarters in berlin and we have johnson and simon with us here is simon young our political correspondent in studio thank you all if you are just joining us you tuned in to our special announcement of the social democrats of voting yes to joining another government with a chance on the markets conservatives two thirds of s.p.d. members voting in favor of the deal have it out by their party's leaders and the conservatives a chance or can now breathe a sigh of relief thanks for watching we'll be back at the top of the hour with much more.
