it out to form a new go. off it's good to have you with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has met with u.s. president donald trump at the white house the visit comes amid corruption investigations that could threaten political survival talks are expected to focus on curbing the regional influence archrival iran as well as the stalled israeli palestinian peace process tensions have been high in the region since trump recognized jerusalem as the capital of israel in december and announced that the u.s. embassy would move to the city despite those tensions trump told reporters in the oval office that he thought there was a good chance for peace in the conflict here's what he had to say just
8:02 pm
a short while ago. what better if we could make peace between israel and the palestinians and i can tell you we're working very hard on doing that and i think we have a very good chance and the biggest difficulty that anybody said you look over twenty five years nobody could get past number one jerusalem they couldn't get past it we've taken it off the table so this gives us a real opportunity to peace and we'll see how it works out that the palestinians i think you are wanting to come back to the table very bad. if they don't you don't have peace if you don't have peace if they don't you don't have peace and that's a possibility also i'm not saying it's going to happen everybody are there is the u.s. president there donald trump let's go to washington now we're joined by our correspondent carsten phenomena good evening to you carson analysts are describing this moment as the dawn of a new era for u.s. israeli relations and where does this leave peace negotiations considering that

trumps mideast envoy his son in law jared kirshner has lost his security clearance . well the fact that the security clearance of jarrett cushion has been downgraded from top secret to only secret is of course a major blow to cushion. when he wants to be seen as a serious power broker on the international stage and in this whole process of course he still has the president's ear and the president can give him any sensitive and from ation that he wants and i think the bigger problem really is donald trump's decision to officially move the u.s. embassy to israel to jerusalem because with this move in contrast to what the president just said in that clip clearly it has destroyed the notion of the united states as an honest broker as
8:04 pm
a neutral broker in this whole discussion the palestinian leaders do not even want to be seen with the talking with the americans and clearly they think that america is now openly siding with israel and so in my view there is no peace process and jerry question also hasn't even presented any peace plan or even a roadmap to revive the peace process on the quite sure about the optimism of president trump comes from carson both of these leaders they're in hot water domestically we've got the israeli leader facing corruption allegations the white house is in turmoil the president possibly starting a trade war so how is this face to face meeting how is it going to help both of these leaders. well it helps both leaders indeed in the way that benjamin netanyahu can demonstrate he is an important player on the
8:05 pm
international stage he will he is seen next to the most powerful man in the world and for donald trump also it's good for him on the domestic stage to be seen as someone who sides with frale who is a good friend of the israeli prime minister because that pleases an important part of his domestic base the pro is where lobby and the christian if angelica is who are supporting israel and so for those two leaders definitely this was a feel good event. and it has do we know has prime minister netanyahu has he extended an invitation to president truong to attend the opening of the u.s. embassy in jerusalem at least the two have been talking about this when i asked about this possibility by the white house press pool in the oval office president trump i may go to jerusalem for the official opening of the u.s.

embassy there of course because the date has been moved forwards to him it's made the official date for the relocation of the embassy to coincide with the seventieth anniversary of the declaration of the state of israel on may fourteenth of course the americans will not be able to build a new embassy by that time so what they're doing is upgrading the existing consulate the american consulate and best use of them changed all signs and move the ambassador there and yes donald trump might be going there as well. all right correspondent in washington carson phenomenon the story forced my question thank you very much. for we have news just coming in the b.b.c. is reporting that a former russian spy living in england is critically ill after being exposed to and un known substance sergey script was granted refuge in britain after a spy swap back in twenty ten now we are waiting for

has been covering the story for us from rome we asked him a short while ago what's the next step for italy and the center left democratic party well at least the democratic leader said that he will not withdraw immediately so we can expect him to remain in the position as the leader of the. left party until the congress would vote somebody new and and so it's interesting when he says that he now ruled out any coalition with a populist party in italy and basically thereby rules out a coalition which experts told me is the most likely would have been the most likely scenario with the five star movement for instance so it just adds to the complicated situation of a hung parliament and though we'll have to wait and see what kind of horse trading the next couple of days will bring. and there was there reporting from rome here is
