embassy in jerusalem we'll get more from our washington correspondent and italy's former prime minister. steps down as democratic party leader after record numbers of voters deserted the political center in sunday's election they flocked instead to. endure were skeptical parties who will now have to battle it out to form a. good to have you with us reboard coming in that a former russian spy living in england is critically ill after being exposed to unknown substance sergei screwed up ball was a refuge in britain after a spy swap deal back in two thousand and ten he was convicted. in russia of

betraying russian agents to british intelligence police have confirmed that two people a man and a woman were found unconscious on a bench on sunday in the city of solsbury both are receiving treatment and an investigation is under way to determine what caused their condition police gave a press conference a short while ago they say that they're keeping an open mind about the nature of this incident this has not been declared as a counter terrorism incident and we would urge people not to speculate however i must emphasize that we retain an open mind and we continue to review this position we have access to a wide range of specialist resources and services that are helping us to understand what we are or on stating that at this time the focus at this moment in trying to stop this war has caused these people to become critically ill and we are working with partners to prioritize this diagnosis and ensure that they receive the most appropriate and timely treatment. for more now we're joined by our correspondent

erin tilton he is in moscow good evening erin what can you tell was about the victims russian passed. well we don't know much about him the russian government hasn't released any official statements as of yet what we do know is as you said the man's name was so he couldn't call he is supposedly work for the f.s.b. now that's russia's state security service and actually the fall of the organization to the k.g.b. we know he was arrested in two thousand and four and accused of being a double agent for british intelligence he's accused of turning over information on several dozen or russian agents to british intelligence forces now that of course landed him in jail eventually he was exchanged as part of a massive prisoner swap at least in two thousand and ten interesting enough that that spy swap involved and chapman who was the infamous russian sleeper agent who
10:04 pm
was sent to america several years ago now regarding his past since he left on russia we're told he kept mostly true self and tried to stay out of the limelight. and erin what have reactions in russia been to the news. well as i said they've been quite new to up to this point we haven't really seen any official word which is actually not that surprising typically when cases like this come up the russian government tries to play the game and doesn't necessarily react to it right away we've seen some oppositional media like to reduce. or the medusa organization comment on this case but so far all of their sources have been based on british information so right now there isn't a lot of new news coming directly out of moscow and britain is home to several former opponents of putin's government but it appears that they are far from
10:05 pm
say. well that could actually be packed up by some events who's seen in recent years i mean the closest case that springs to mind is the murder of others under the name who was also a former f.s.b. agent who had taken shelter in england now similar to this current case he actually had run afoul of the government after he accused many members of the s s f s b of working hand in hand with the russian mafia and even saying that they were going so far as to assassinate political opponents to help some of their more aggressive business ventures and underworld ventures now he of course was murdered in two thousand and six after two men slipped plone him into his t.v. now it was kind of a rather bizarre case because one of the few incidents of a murder victim actually directly helping the police find his killers were
10:06 pm
basically it took around three weeks for mr linden incl to die from the poison and in that time he was able to reconstruct the events surrounding his poisoning and that at least in terms of the british government pointed them directly back towards the f.s.b. you know there was an official inquiry into his death in two thousand and sixteen which concluded that members at the highest level of the russian intelligence service were actually involved in the killing now this is of course something that the russian government has always denied but with cases like this cropping up every couple years it does raise a lot of unanswered questions our correspondent the story for us tonight from moscow erin thank you very much. embattled israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has met with u.s. president donald trump at the white house the visit came amid corruption investigations that could threaten netanyahu is political survival the two leaders presented a united front as they met for
10:07 pm
a working lunch saying us israeli relations are at an all time high netanyahu think trump for his tremendous friendship and his decision to move the u.s. embassy to jerusalem trump said that he may travel to the city for the opening of the embassy in may the u.s. decision to recognize jerusalem as israel's capital has inflamed tensions in the region and despite those tensions truck told reporters in the oval office that he thought there is a good chance for peace in the israeli palestinian conflict here's part of what he had to say a little earlier what better if we could make peace between israel and the palestinians and i can tell you we are working very hard on doing that and i think we have a very good chance and the biggest difficulty that anybody said you look over twenty five years nobody could get past number one jerusalem they couldn't get past it we've taken it off the table so this gives us a real opportunity to peace we'll see how it works out for the palestinians i think
10:08 pm
you are wanting to come back to the table very bad. if they don't you don't have peace. you don't have peace if they don't you don't have peace and that's a possibility also i'm not saying it's going to happen everybody. are there was a u.s. president there donald trump let's go to washington now we're joined by our correspondent carsten phenomenons good evening to you karsten analysts are describing this moment as the dawn of a new era for u.s. israeli relations and where does this leave peace negotiations considering that trump's mideast envoy his son in law jared kirshner has lost his security clearance . well the fact that the security clearance of jarrett cushion has been downgraded from top secret to only secret is of course a major blow to cushion. when he wants to be seen as a serious power broker on the international stage and in this whole process of
10:09 pm
course he still has the president's ear and the president can give him any sensitive and from asian that he wants and i think the bigger problem really is donald trump's decision to officially move the u.s. embassy to israel to jerusalem because with this move in contrast to what the president just said in that clip clearly it has destroyed the notion of the united states as an honest broker as a neutral broker in this whole discussion the palestinian leaders do not even want to be seen with the talking with the americans and clearly they think that america is now openly siding with israel and so in my view there is no peace process and jerry question also hasn't even presented any peace plan or even a roadmap to revive the peace process on not quite sure about the optimism of
10:10 pm
president trump comes from incursion both of these leaders there in hot water domestically we've got the israeli leader facing corruption allegations the white house is in turmoil the president possibly starting a trade war so how is this face to face meeting how is it going to help both of these leaders. well it helps both leaders indeed in the way that benjamin netanyahu can demonstrate he is an important player on the international stage. he's seen next to the most powerful man in the world and for donald trump also it's good for him on the domestic stage to be seen as someone who sides with the east frail who is a good friend of the israeli prime minister because that pleases an important part of his domestic base pro is where lobby and the christian if jellicoe is who are supporting israel and so for those two leaders definitely this was
10:11 pm
a feel good event. and it has do we know has prime minister netanyahu has he extended an invitation to president trump to attend the opening of the u.s. embassy in jerusalem at least the two have been talking about this when i asked about this possibility by the white house press pool in the oval office president trump i may go to jerusalem for the official opening of the u.s. embassy there of course because the date has been moved forward to him it's made the official date for the relocation of the embassy to coincide with the seventieth anniversary of the declaration of the state of israel on may fourteenth of course the americans will not be able to build a new embassy by that time so what they're doing is upgrading the existing consulate the american consulate invest to receive them change the dollar signs and move the ambassador there and yes donald trump might be going there as one all

right correspondent in washington carson phenomenon the story forced my question thank you very much. italy's former prime minister matteo renzi has stepped down as leader of the country's centrist democratic party now that's after voters deserted the party in droves in sunday's election instead they turned into anti immigrant and euro skeptic populists amid a wave of concern about the state of italy's economy though the poll delivered a hung parliament renzi was left with little alternative. not a press conference he was looking forward to it's hardly an x. premium a tale of n.c. faces the inevitable resigning as leader of italy's democratic party following an embarrassing show in sunday's election. i don't see when said he will lash it's over it is that i must leave the helm of the democratic party off to
