6:01 pm
a look at demonstrations are round the world as women demand greater good quality and then end to sexual violence. or her arc thank you so much for your company everyone. and we start our broadcast right here in germany where one of the country's most popular politicians foreign minister has announced he won't be included in chancellor anglo-american new coalition government while that's after rumors of a bit around with the leaders of his own social democratic party are real replacements at the foreign ministry is likely to be heikal must the outgoing justice minister on the news made for a slightly uncomfortable appearance by gabriele today at a scheduled press conference with his counterpart from bosnia-herzegovina. it was a routine appointment for a german foreign minister but. things are anything but routine right now minute the
6:02 pm
meeting with his boss the in counterpart igor sir not out on thursday was his last official international engagement. for him to get involved and gum real has been germany's foreign minister for just over a year during that time he became the country's most popular politician even beating chancellor merkel and future economics minister paid to in opinion polls aren't much respect for his work for example his handling of strained german turkish relations god will often met his turkish counterpart medlock shell was so new and invited him to his home as he worked to get german journalists and human rights activists released and he succeeded in part some of the prisoners were freed . but there is another sign to seek not company he is notoriously independent and volatile for example on the sidelines of the munich security conference he broke ranks and appealed for sanctions against russia to be lifted following a cease fire in eastern ukraine and. sort of i am convinced that if we succeed in
6:03 pm
this then we must begin to gradually lift the sanctions i know that the official position on this is different and i know it is more importantly irritated members of his own party the s.p.d. he even attacked them party leader martin schultz personally which many and his party found unforgettable above all his relationship with future party leader on three analysis his view this dysfunctional. now media reports say his successor will be high call mosse the previous justice minister. it was playing down the loss of his position when asked how he feels about leaving in a positive words he will then there's just been through that high school mass will be the new foreign minister then i have a really good feeling he'll do an excellent job i'm also fine. take care. our political correspondent kate brady joins us now from our parliamentary studios
6:04 pm
ok this is a man who ruffled a lot of feathers and burned a couple of bridges on his way out. he said we did and despite gaining much respect for his work as germany's foreign minister they say it was all forgotten in recent weeks by the s.p.d. rady and this was due to the breakdown of a friendship between haiti and the former s.p.d. leader martin schultz and you might remember that when the grand coalition deal between the social democrats and locals conservatives was first agreed martin schultz said that he'd be vying for the position of foreign minister but gabriele responded saying this was a broken promise as you might remember back in september immediately after the german elections elections schultz actually said that he would never take a ministerial post and a medical led government and so gabriele responded actually even quoting his
6:05 pm
daughter in which he said that she had told him daddy don't worry now we can spend more time together and you won't have to spend so much time with the man with the hairy face and this comment was regarded by the s.p.d. as something which disqualified gabriele from being able to continue to hold his place as foreign minister so now he will just be seven as a normal member of the german parliament what does this leave his exit mean for germany's foreign policy. well gabriele was a very straight talking foreign minister which isn't always the case with people in that post so be it very interesting to see how his successor deals particularly with turkey and it will be a big challenge and he did gain a lot of respect not only in germany abroad for his work as the german foreign minister and this comes at a time when there's real pressure on germany particularly in europe to really stand
6:06 pm
out and take a strong stance on the world stage. kate tell us about his successor the man tipped to take over the reins who is heikal mosse so. has actually been the justice minister of posts that he'd be the obviously leaving if it is confirmed that he is indeed going to be the new foreign minister and he's been holding that post since two thousand and thirteen and one of the one of his biggest moments here in germany was bringing in in the anti hate hate speech a law which has gained quite a cause quite a lot of control the state here and so he doesn't have much background or experience in foreign policy so it could be quite a challenge for him over this next term in this new merkel led government. just very quickly if i may is he more diplomatic and that's very difficult to tell at the moment of course we've never seen him in dealing with foreign policy so
6:07 pm
we'll just have to wait and see while have to wait and see time will tell kate brady thank you so much. aren't to tell you now about some of the other stories making news around the world. police in vienna say the main suspect in two stabbing attacks that happened yesterday has confessed to the crime four people were severely injured after they were stabbed in what appeared to be random attacks in public places authorities say the suspect in custody is an afghan national. british police are racing to find out who poisoned a former russian double agent and his daughter with a nerve agent last weekend investigators are treating the case as attempted murder lawmakers in the media speculated that moscow is behind the attack sparking a row between the u.k. and russia. the trial has opened in denmark of the man accused of killing swedish journalist kim wall mission ventre peter mattson has denied murdering the

journalists on his submarine but he has admitted to dismembering and disposing of her body afterward he says it was an accidental death. to syria now where an aid convoy bound for the besieged rebel held enclave of eastern huta has been postponed as fighting in the area intensifies syrian government forces have seize half of the territory held by rebels in the damascus suburbs the last opposition stronghold close to the capital around four hundred thousand people are believed to be trapped in the area you know and has the courage to all parties to abide by a cease fire in order to deliver aid and evacuate the wounded. while the situation at least in a hoot is getting increasingly dire the u.n. describing it earlier this week as apocalyptic we can speak now tomorrow from the world food programme she joins us from damascus good evening marla so good to have you with us again aid convoys blocked again this is terrible news for the civilians
6:09 pm
what happened exactly what made your organization the site to hold off. well it was mainly the escalation in fighting and insecurity on the ground it paralyzed the un's ability to move into areas that are besieging hard to reach a case in point is our inability to go ahead with a convoy today into duma. to deliver the remaining. assistance that we were unable to continue offloading on our first entry on the fifth of march is there any other way to get around and ensure that your supplies reach the people of isaan. well for a humanitarian operation to work successfully we require unhindered safe passage and access to people who are desperately in need and in order to do so all parties
6:10 pm
to the conflict need to abide by humanitarian principles and also give us that window of opportunity to go in safely the liver and get out safely as well and time for distribution are any aid organizations operational in the area still to your knowledge well we are aware that there is a local charity on the inside and when we were there on the fifth of march many of the families told us that they were receiving very simple meals about maybe a small plate of playwrights and another plate of bulger wheat to survive on for a day so we know that there is some kind of help but the situation on the inside is getting progressively worse and people's inability to access food is increasing and not more a couple of days ago you and i spoke to you were cautiously optimistic you know what the situation visibly deteriorating what's your biggest fear i mean you worry yourself in eastern ohio to get things possibly get any worse.
6:11 pm
well definitely could get worse if the axis is the laid as it were we're saying earlier that because the u.n. response is paralyzed because we're unable to move because of ongoing insecurity and also italia tory fire there's been also retaliatory attacks or shellings in damascus and civilians get caught in the middle of it so as humanitarians we keep stressing the point that we need the kind of access that would only be available if there is a ceasefire that is adhere to our words from the world food program in damascus thank you very much. now today is international women's day for some a day of celebration but for thousands of women across the globe it's also a day to demonstrate for more progress on gender equality women in spain's capital madrid brought traffic to a standstill with this demonstration one of hundreds in the country where women are
6:12 pm
also staging a twenty four hour long strike they're calling for an end to unfair wages and from seoul to istanbul women have been taking to the streets to protest against inequality harassment and gender violence. and our very own julia hahn is one of those demonstrations in istanbul we can go wife to her now or hi yulia set the scene for us we can see the demonstrators gathered right behind you what's the atmosphere like there. well the women here on the east declared a street that is jimbo's main shopping streets are right in the center of this city our women have gathered here hundreds probably even thousand it's really difficult to say how many they are but they rode with those they brought protests posters they are allowed there are screaming freedom for women they are protesting against male dominance they say you cannot stop us if you will never be pos you will never
6:13 pm
be able to stop us so they are really willing to show their dissent their protests here today and you have to know it's actually a really rad chance for protest in turkey because of the government the country is governed by emergency laws since a failed military coup in summer twenty sixteen so actually demonstrations are not allowed but this one has not been blocked or prevented by the government so people can take to the streets women are taking to the streets they want to make the oysters heard all right they want to make their voices heard here what are some of the key issues for women in turkey right now are some of those. well some of the key issues one key issue is for example equal pay and access to the workforce you have to know that sixty percent of women according to official data here in turkey are not working so for them it's really difficult to to get a job to have access to the job market because some of them due to the conservative
6:14 pm
rules of this issiah t. are kind of due to stay at home and be housewives turkish president or edge of type out one for example said a woman is deficient if she is not a mother urging women to have at least three children so. many women here are protesting against this way of thinking others are here out to protest against domestic violence and violence against women that's a really big issue here just one figure lost twenty seventeen more than four hundred women were killed by their brothers fathers husbands in domestic while and so this is a really big issue for many women here. yulia han thank you so much our reporting for us from istanbul all right and before i let you go i would like to tell you our main headline this hour german foreign minister has announced he will not be part of chancellor anglo-american new coalition government the move comes a bit rumors of
6:15 pm
