money spinner of the drinks industry actually say. this is due to your business i am god office in berlin after president trump's announcement of hefty tariffs on oil a minimum and still imports the european union is still trying to formulate a response will tell you a tory terms have been discussed but in reality everybody knows that a trade war only has loses but what are the alternatives. in the debate about tariffs the europeans were united on at least one thing nobody wants tariffs tensions with the us to escalate into a trade war i think there are good reasons which vote site. we'll at the end of the day accept that we don't need we don't want a trade war instead we should concentrate on improving trading conditions between the two trading floor like minded conduits for years goods and services of travel

back and forth between the usa and europe according to well established trade rules nobody questioned the fairness of the arrangement until donald trump suddenly announced he was going to raise tariffs on steel and bellamy m he said existing trade arrangements were unfairly stacked against the usa let's look at the statistics around twenty six percent of goods exported to europe from the usa tax free in the other direction almost half the good sense stateside from europe tax free on average in the e.u. levies five point two percent on american goods while the usa levies only three point five percent that's what donald trump is calling a bad deal europe now has to respond to that accusation from the president. of. tolerance between the e.u. and the us. i can understand here. we are not happy.

that is the reason why if you recall we started trade negotiations this is if we should go to the talks now. make trade mr president. but that may be easier said than done while on the european side there's still hope that a last minute deal can be struck to avoid trump's tariffs on steel and element on the other side of the atlantic they are already making. noises about the next layer of import tariffs for example on european cars. and trucks decision to spare caravan mexico from the tariffs on steel or aluminum for now was not an act of selflessness he hopes it will give him leverage in the next round of nafta talks which will be held in washington april is the current status of those negotiations good news for canada and mexico donald trump's new economic

advisor larry kudlow is a strong supporter of the north american free trade agreement. but despite the presence of a new free trade advocate and white house there are still massive hurdles to overcome while some of the u.s. administration's demands are plausible such as the reduction of the u.s. trade deficit with then after others remain contentious trump wants to limit duty free extensions for cars to vehicles detroit eighty five percent of their components from the after countries he is also calling for an end to canada's protections for its tarion poultry producers another point of contention the u.s. objects to canada subsidizing its lumber industry but providing its own producers with cheap access to public land despite those stumbling blocks canadian prime minister justin trudeau believes a deal can be reached. canada knows that there is a win win win outcome on improving now after something that will be good for canada

for the us and for mexico and we're working very hard to do that but we continue to stand up for canada's interests canadian jobs mexican negotiators are in the pressure to stand up to trump as well but that want to invite alienating a major trading partner got a possible sticking point aside from the out i'm a village choose access to mexico's energy market canada and mexico is exemption from american steel and a million tariffs are likely to give trans thing go shaders leverage in the next round of talks. now we must talk about water everyone needs it but increasingly this is how people are getting it in plastic bottles which is silly at least for us in the industrialized industrialized west where water of high quality comes from the tap nearly for free but a new study is claiming that bottled water can contain micro plastics the health implications are largely unknown but just to get an idea of the scale of the issue

ten years ago the world drank two hundred twelve billion liters of bottled water and the latest figures show that number of has nearly doubled to three hundred ninety one billion liters the biggest market is china last year consumers that spent thirty seven billion dollars on bottles water united says was next was twenty three billion dollars in first place mexico and it's a global business with many players the french company don has the largest shad's followed by a coca-cola and the swish swiss food giant nestlé but consumers appear to be drinking more than just water the new report claims that the tested samples content content an average of two hundred thirty five particles per liter so what are they and other harmful we'll ask our environment correspondent in a moment but first this report. most people think of water is

clean and pure but research by the nonprofit organization media suggests that the bottled kind often contains microscopic plastic particles researchers analyzed bottled water from a total of nineteen locations in nine different countries the results came as a surprise. every brand of bottled water that we looked at had plastic every single brand. the occurrence varies kind of kind of dramatically and certain brands had much higher counts than the other brands. the highest concentrations of plastic particles were found in nestle's pure life brand of bottled water. the indian brand had about half as many particles per liter as did germany's carol steiner and aqua which is owned by the french food giant known nestle and carol steiner have rejected the study's findings they're

not slow us is a research at the life and its institute of freshwater ecology he says it's not yet clear whether micro plastics of the kind found in bottled water are harmful to humans. we're just starting our research chemists biologists and toxicologists still need to conduct tests we don't even know what kind and size of micro plastics are to be found in the environment and in the food chain. as long as we can to certan that we don't know what we're talking about this is the tip of the iceberg this ice packs micro plastic contamination appears to be widespread but what effect it might have in the long term is not clear it's most likely liable to do far more harm than good. so bottled water is a big money spinner for the drinks industry and it's growing by eight percent each year so it's a huge market and especially the big players in the industry can't be happy about

the findings of that study let's bring in sunny dean from our environment desk in bonner joins us now is only a how dangerous exactly obvious particles is there of any cancer risk involved have any illnesses been connected with it. well there's a real gap of knowledge as to the impacts on human health it's known that larger pieces certainly impact marine life and cbers if you think of entanglement and even the gesture but i think it's important to point out plastics never really biodegrade they just break down into ever smaller pieces and in doing that they can also enter our systems we can breed them in and they come into our lungs and it's not known if they can even penetrate your bloodstream and the main concern is really around toxic chemicals that can hitchhike on to these tiny plastic particles but again it is really not known to what extent our bodies absorb these these

particles are they coming from the bottles or is it the is the water itself contaminated before it's being packaged. well that's not clear and it can't be ruled out that the plastics in these bottled waters are coming from the bottles themselves although it was also found in glass bottles it might actually be from the lid as well which often contains plastics but really plastic is everywhere from the most remote reaches of the ocean to the depths of the antarctic and plastic surgery even in tap water so you can imagine if it's there it's also in a lot of other things that we consume there deliberately added into some of our personal hygiene products like toothpaste and facials just grub and even a big source is synthetic fabrics so those fleece jackets and microfiber blankets that we toss in the washing machine released tens of thousands of fibers in each wash very briefly who's behind this report and how reliable is it. or

put media as a nonprofit journalistic foundation in based out of washington d.c. and they did do a previous study last year or they kind of organize this study about micro plastics and tap water and that study did get some criticism this one i think they've been a lot more you know diligent and they've you know done done more methodical research and so basically i think that the scope of it is quite large and it is important to point out however it was not peer reviewed by scientists so i have been home for us thank you very much. and that's it for me and the business team i'll have an update for you in the next up thank you for watching bob . cut. cut. cut. cut cut
