and said solidarity with israel is central to german policy. and the formula one season kicks off with a surprise at the australian grand prix for ariz it's about caps world champion lewis hamilton to wait for a magic victory. time my a schwager it's good to have you with us former counsel on president carlos wisdom on has been arrested in germany on a european arrest warrant they arrest what has sparked angry demonstrations in barcelona where police have clashed with protesters who have taken to the streets in the thousands we'll get analysis in the moment but first this report on how those events unfolded. clashes on the streets of barcelona as groomsmen for calmness pushed him on survey sed damage to. find themselves on
2:02 am
the end of police batons the radius laid away it was at the site of this german motorway where the former catalan president was detained close to the danish border he was on route to belgium after delivering a lecture in finland the german authorities say they're following due process. who for you to pee in a rush warrant has been issued we received a request and it's been looked into and we're assessing its preconditions and we will farther assess whether extradition can be granted the step before that however is the detention order and we're seeing if we can proceed with thoughts on all of this before. the catch of the leader has been in exile in belgium since october avoiding spain's charges of rebellion after he led an unconstitutional independence referendum rito. back in barcelona as support for him is not weaned in his absence.
2:03 am
much initiation on the part of the central government because we feel i reached him we will not feel spanish because they arrested carlos pushed him on it will have the opposite effect. the demonstrators are calling for him to be released but unionist parties are welcoming the arrest it will be authorities in germany had to say to his feet. so i just of course is the vice president of the council on problem and ally of carlist krishna he joins me now from barcelona mr gaza thank you so much for being here let's start very simply what has been your reaction to prison last arrest today. well we were expecting that the president would have to appear before the courts somewhere we were expecting that he would be going to back home in belgium and he would have
2:04 am
to undergo the same procedure of. brussels. that. he had to undergo some three or four months ago so we basically. expected this. we really hope that whatever the country whatever the court provided it's a european democracy will that the word is without merit that it's a politically motivated prosecution and will not grant the extradition so you're saying that this is a politically motivated and that this this warrant shouldn't be valid and the cattle on message that we heard today is that this arrest is threatening the values that europe was built on but. these are there an argument to say that wisdom all undermined those values knowingly when he broke with the spanish constitution and declared independence. but that's not that's never been
2:05 am
a crime. that i know of so there may be a political problem there may be a political conflict there's no crime there's nothing to be sent to jail for and obviously we expected for a long time three years now that would be some. real political dialogue and and find a political solution for once a democratic demand would have been a peaceful saying come pain for independence pretty much like all other countries europe like scotland or countries he in the west like. and so the really strange thing is the reaction by the spanish government that's cracking down on ordinary people and elected politicians basically on everyone just. let me remind that. two days ago we had a vote to elect
2:06 am
a president of the cuts on power meant and the vote didn't succeed because the country didn't get an overall majority that means that in forty eight hours they had to be a second vote but in between the county that was arrested and sent to prison with the other five members of the parliament i don't think this is really normal for a democracy is it well he is accused of some serious crimes now i mean certainly we can see the argument of trying to give the voice to people but we're not talking about an overwhelming majority of cotland who want independence in the last in the last election it was nearly a fifty fifty split between the pro union s. and the pro independence parties here feel that there is a risk that this push for catalan independence that you stand behind is dividing your region. well there's a lot of debate i mean the issue of independence is
2:07 am
a political. issue that raises emotions but we're not there i think we're we had an election and we led to the parliament the parliament met for the first time. on a story on january seventeenth and since then we've had three attempts to elect a president there's a clear majority to elect a government and the courts the spanish courts by government intervention by government request have blocked the parliament from electing a government we're not declaring independence right now we're trying to elect a government based on the vote of the december election in fact we had this friday we had a decision by the committee the united nations committee and human rights. granting interim measures to one of the pundits. on the basis that their political rights are being violated this is about human rights now it's about that the right of the

people to elect their own government it's not just about independence that's. a very open debate but we're now over have a parliament and were selected in december this is trying to elect a government that's consistent with the majority of the of the. results in december or it doesn't costello have to leave it there thank you very much is the vice president of the council on the parliament joining us from barcelona and i'm joined now in our studio by our correspondent fully las let's start very simply a lot happened today what's been the reaction from madrid well the reaction from madrid has been silence in fact we haven't heard anything from madrid for the moment by monday i'm sure there's going to have to be some sort of reaction but beyond that they my at this kind of reaction from the government of money is no shock to any. normally the prime minister of spend money on our holy is quiet he
2:09 am
likes to take his time when reacting to these kind of situations and this the interesting about this is that pretty much was arrested in cure many and he's been in a number of other countries he's in belgium he was in finland making his way back through denmark but it was in germany that he was picked up why germany what we'd have to look really it would be to any conclusions now as some of the charges that have been brought against him on are active for example rebellion which is one of the main charges and the most serious charges is not part of the penal code in belgium now other countries do have it and germany has something which is very similar cold treason and the reason why the original charges were actually dropped against titles which i won several months ago were the extradition order was dropped it was because they felt that in belgium he would be extradited with those charges being brought against him so now we're seeing that as of friday this has been reactivated and. he's been arrested in germany a country which happens to have. a similar charge to rebellion and one of the other
2:10 am
big charges of course is sedition but what i've come to conclusions on monday he will be appearing before a court in germany and then we'll see what exactly takes place. for us in our studio thank you very much for that. and to russia now where the death toll from a fire at a shopping center in siberia has risen to thirty seven russian media says many more are still missing the blaze broke out on the fourth floor of the complex in the coal mining city of command of all eyewitnesses say they saw people jumping from the windows to escape the cause of the blaze is not yet known but authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. and germany's new foreign minister has embarked on his first trip outside europe to israel on his first official visit to the country ma stopped off at the vashem holocaust memorial in jerusalem ma says solidarity with israel is central to german foreign policy he set to meet with the

and formula one there's been a surprise opening there's been a surprise in the opening race of the season in australia with ferrari's german driver sebastian vettel sealing a dramatic victory after getting the better of world champion lewis hamilton who had been the clear race favorite. lewis hamilton started out on pole and led into the first corner in the season opener in melbourne leading f one fans to sit back and expect another easy victory for the defending world champion. but that all changed midway through the race when sebastian vettel pitted jurga virtual safety car face those on track with force to slow down because of a broken down car but vettel was not affected by the restriction in the pits and emerged in front of hamilton's must say to ease. the german then pushed his ferrari hard and managed to fight off the britain for the rest of the race to seal a forty eight group prix win and one hundred podium in his two hundred f one race.
2:14 am
that was euphoria at the surprise triumph was visible for all to see. but hamilton was left to look on the bright side we still have great pace of course i was great at things in the race i was able to apply some pressure at the end vettel admitted he didn't look easy i was praying for save and then when i saw it obviously you know it was really full of adrenaline even though you know the race is frozen but still to come into the pits everything limit trying to get back out because they told me is really close with lewis there are investable look to build on their victory next month in bahrain. in tennis world number one roger federer suffered a shock defeat in the second round of the miami open at the hands of world number one hundred seventy five the nazi kochi knock us of australia this last means federer will lose his top spot in the world rankings furthermore the swiss player announced that he won't compete at any clay court tennis tournaments for
