france and germany are called into the russian foreign ministry after the kremlin ordered sixty u.s. diplomats to leave the country this is part of the diplomatic fallout after the controversy over the poisoning of a former russian double agent and his daughter. and back in the ring with a good look at the box so who can prove she's got the hots for battle after fighting a serious illness. hello and welcome. the united nations is called at the was a humanitarian crisis in the way the conflict in yemen has killed more than ten thousand people and displaced around three million this concerns in germany the german could be feeling the bloodshed the country has strict laws on the export of weapons which come of the sale of arms to areas in conflict but reports say
1:02 pm
a german arms supplier is circumventing these laws it's using its subsidiary in south africa to supply weapons to the south of the lid coalition fighting in yemen . south africa some fifty kilometers east of cape town a huge tightly guarded compound. the watch towers carry the blue logo of i'm a tongue germany's biggest defense corporation but here in south africa it is called the hine mittal deano munition or r.d.m. r.c.m. is mainly an export driven company and they are one of the most successful companies into africa they have quite a turn of billions of brands every year they employ over two thousand people and they all crying at quite a phenomenal rate the company doesn't just export bombs from here but also whole weapons factories thirty nine such facilities have been set up in countries including egypt saudi arabia and the united arab emirates they are all part of the

military coalition fighting in yemen. which is currently facing the world's worst humanitarian crisis. metal is supplying bombs to saudi arabia for this war despite strict german export regulations. plant on the vacation island of sardinia manufactures these bombs. germany plays a role through the export of weapons especially into regions that are unstable where there is conflict where there is repression most obviously today the middle east and plays a role in ensuring that those conflicts are remarkably bloody profits flowing to the german companies coffers ryan mittal declined repeated interview requests it insists it follows the laws of the countries it operates in. the german government

also refused to take a stance on the company's overseas subsidiaries for the green party that's an untenable position. still tied to no hits and please cynical of these defense companies to complain about the strict german regulations while they found ways to dodge the rules such as through overseas operations when i and then they continue to supply german weapons to crisis areas that's unacceptable we urgently need to close these loopholes. government researchers have recently said that german politicians can lawfully limit the overseas activities of german companies but it's unlikely that will pass in parliament. joining me now for more on the story is the deadliest political correspondent hans blonde and monica jones from business says thank you both very much for coming in if we start with you hans want to help us out in this talk in our report my journey being involved in countries which are very unstable explain to us what is german rules about the export of weapons to
1:05 pm
conflict areas all strictly speaking german weapons exports arms exports are not meant. to be. allowed to countries or to areas to regions which are unstable where there is conflict and in fact on the yemen case the new coalition government that has just taken power here in germany in its coalition agreement has said that it will stop food exports to countries that are involved in the human conflict but generally speaking you know there have been a large number of exports to that region in the past and existing contracts are likely to be on and money are you know better than both of us i mean alms of big business right and germany is a lead to export of arms in the was but how important is the arms industry for the country but just to give you a few a few figures in order to put it into context for example about fifty thousand jobs depend on the arms industry here in germany that sounds like a lot but if you compare it to the car industry there we're talking of up to one
1:06 pm
point eight million jobs dependent on the that executive secretary so yeah that puts it in perspective in terms of revenue in the last three years from twenty seventeen to twenty twenty fourteen to twenty seventeen the germans oms export sector amounted to twenty five billion euros about six billion a year that is a lot of money and ryan actually contributes quite a huge share to that in twenty sixteen their sales volume increased by fourteen percent to three billion euros that means quite a big amount of tax that they would have to pay which is good for the german government of course the share value went to seventy percent which is great for shareholders but also that is interesting for people who invested in pension funds you know ordinary people who go to their savings banks because their pension fund portfolio includes shares of rye mittal something that you and i wouldn't immediately think of that kind of connection but going back to the tax revenue
1:07 pm
which of course plays a big role but when we talk about. ryan mittal and some of the companies doing that to outsourcing and having subsidiaries for example in south africa in saudi arabia in the united arab emirates they're not only at here of course to the norse there when it comes to exploiting weapons but also to tax laws and that means that all paying tax to the german government so many dimensions from the business perspective to the story concert didn't do you not consider weapons in germany is always a hugely controversial issue we have the opposition left fati complaining bitterly about the sale of weapons to saudi arabia and we also have the green party talking about the state setting weapons to tookie so how do you see this developing yes indeed it is very controversial and obviously when you export workmen's you conder really predict what's going to happen with those weapons and took is a good example turkey is a nato partner in other words there are very few restrictions from the german side to exporting weapons to took
1:08 pm
a back now turkish tanks are being used in northern i mean german tanks are being used in northern syria by turkey in a conflict that is a largely regarded as being against international law on that score too there has been some pressure on the german government and there have been some restrictions imposed on further deals with turkey but it makes the whole situation very very unpredictable very controversial politically and i think this discussion in germany is going to stay at the top of the agenda for quite a while right time span from a political disc and a moniker from a business says thank you both very much for talking about the story. let me now bring you up to date with some other stories making news around the wild mian my has sworn in its news president when my into it comes as the country marks two years of civilian rule myint a close ally of diffracted leader unsung suchi stressed the need to respect the rule of media during his inauguration speech. in thailand at least twenty people

were killed when a boss called fire and veered off the road the vehicle was on his way from the mean mob border to bangkok when it burst into flames almost all those on board the bus migrant workers. palestinian officials say and israeli tank shells killed a farmer in the gaza strip early on friday but israel says soldiers opened fire on two men who approached a gaza israel border fence and acted what they say was suspiciously the incident comes as boston and militant groups hamas a launch a six weeks of protest against the israeli blockade of gaza border. turning now to russia which has summoned the german and french ambassador the russian foreign ministry this comes off the kremlin announced it is expelling sixty american diplomats and shutting the u.s. consulate in st petersburg it's the latest chapter in the diplomatic row over the poisoning of the double agent said. and his daughter yulia in britain many western

countries who are russia responsible but moscow has denied its involved. but hundreds of years since petersburg has held symbolic value for us russian ties it was here in seventeen i.c. that the u.s. opened its first mission in russia but its diplomatic presence in the city will soon end moscow kicking out scores of western diplomats as a tit for tat retaliation over the poisoning of a former russian double i joined in britain it means more than one hundred fifty diplomats from over two dozen countries will be out of russia. so everything will also be reciprocal in terms of the number of people from the diplomatic missions who will be leaving russia. and that is all for now. a reciprocal move it may be but it's one the u.s. says russia cannot justified because moscow is at fault russia is responsible for

that horrific attack attack on the british citizen and his daughter once again they have broken the chemical weapons convention it was a banned substance that they have used no we take this matter very seriously former russian double i gin surrogate's cream parlor and his daughter yulia were found slumped on a park bench in the city of souls brienne early march poisoned person believes moscow tried to kill the pair. remains in a critical condition in hospital though yulia is conscious and talking according to doctors. russia vehemently denies any involvement in the case and it wants access to your. we we are witnessing the hindrance of russian representatives accessing injured russian citizens what i see is congressionally. the question now is whether the crisis will move beyond teach for tat measures. now to
