i'm not. saying glitter. islam is only starting in april twenty first on t w. this is deja news from bird land a deadly van branding a german city a driver plows into crowds in one store killing two people and injuring many more before taking his own life police say that it is too early to know his motive but media report they say that he was german and suffering psychological issues.
9:01 pm
i'm sorry kelly thank you very much for joining us at least three people have been killed and many more injured after a van plowed into a crowd at munster in southwestern germany police at this hour saying that around thirty people are injured with several of them in a critical condition the driver is among the dead having killed himself after the crash police have warned against speculation regarding motives but local media have reported the driver may have been suffering from psychological issues. and we are live at the scene now with our correspondent daniel koch who is standing by with the very latest for us so daniel you know you were there at the scene we can see police lights in fact behind you what more do we know.
9:02 pm
yes sara let me tell you a little bit what's going on here at the moment i'm at about three hundred meters away from where this actually happened this afternoon at three thirty seven pm german a local time we have to remember that this was probably the first very sunny day that so far we had here in germany so many people this afternoon were outside just a few moments ago we actually had a statement by the interior minister here off this stage here where we are he was sharing with the press that the suspect is a forty nine year old german actually holding a german citizen we don't know if he was also born here and german yet he is apparently also here from this state about one hundred kilometers away and that he had a psychological problems also in the past there have been of course
9:03 pm
a many rumors also throughout the night we also heard a little bit earlier a person here is saying that apparently he already announced in the past that he was that he was planning to commit a public suicide. oh wow that would indeed be quite a statement indeed if that is verified in the end we just have to remind our viewers though that a lot of this information we know we've learned in the wake of these incidents that that comes in initially is not always true so just a word of caution there in the meantime we know that police they said the earlier that they are investigating possible other perpetrators who might have fled from the vehicle so we know for sure if the driver who killed himself if he is the only suspect here. yeah exactly and you say that there's there are still lots of rumors you're going on so indeed we have to be very careful yes there were some people that were in the city there were stating that they indeed saw two people
9:04 pm
also fleeing from this vehicle when this was taking place also journalists were asking the interior minister about that just a few minutes ago and he actually did not call a firm that let me also tell us here that the city is still here that big parts of this city still is a lockdown we're hearing that at this moment police authorities are taking a closer look at this van because also there has been this speculation about possible explosives inside of the van so also the police is taking a very close look as that as well we're also getting a statement at this moment they are also investigating more about this man that they're going to his apartment basically trying at this hour to find more about the man and of course what his plans and motives are given all of those
9:05 pm
open questions and you know how have people there in the city been reacting what have witnesses told you so far. but i've been to the city many times the city with about three hundred thousand inhabitants a big university a city here that is known that many people here are always right there a bicycle people are in shock here i can tell you that for sure as i said a little bit earlier this has been the first really a spring day here in germany dozens of people have been outside in the city sitting outside in cuffs days and restaurants i do have the feeling that since we are now getting more and more information and apparently this has no lamb it back around that people are of course a little bit relieved but still we have to remember that two people here most likely from the city got killed this afternoon so of course many people here also
9:06 pm
at this hour very sad and also very touched what happened we also got a little bit earlier statement from the hospital here in the city they're asking people here to come to the hospital to a donor there blus yes of course because we have to remind people that there are still at least thirty people who are still injured there daniel cope our correspondent live at the scene there in one story thank you so much daniel. and an employee of the restaurant where the incident took place described the scene shortly after the collision let's listen in. i heard a loud bang screaming and then the police arrived and everyone was sent outside i didn't see much just lots of people running away screaming. i'm sorry for those who were caught up in this it's a shock to all of us employees are visitors i know that i'm angry it's cowardly to
9:07 pm
do something like this. a police spokesperson also sharing some details of their ongoing investigation. it's far too early to speak of an attack right now the investigation is ongoing. the area around the accident site has been evacuated and there was possibly a suspicious item in the vehicle investigators are looking into what kind of object that is. the driver killed himself his motive and identity are unknown. let's get more now from hans brandt and erhard al first our correspondents who are joining us here in the studio at g.w. and you know quite a lot of time has has passed between you know last heard from the authorities and what we're learning a bit more on is i think what we do have now is official confirmation as our correspondent was saying from the interior minister of north rhine-westphalia that
9:08 pm
it is the federal state and which minster is situated and he held a press conference and sat at the scene of a crime very recently and confirmed that the suspect is of german origin and that there is no likely there's no indication at the moment of this having any islamist or a terrorist background the indications we've been having for an hour oh true that this may have been the result of psychologically disturbed person taking his own life in what you might call a particularly spectacular manner seemed to be. concretized thing at the moment. piers i think. we're getting more and more information that in fact the fear that this might have been a terrorist attack was not. has not been confirmed has not been realized and i think there will be a sense of relief well why because i mean people are dead people are dead indeed
9:09 pm
she has two people were killed and they are. by the by the driver and he killed himself obviously and there are twenty or so people that are injured several of them about half a dozen of them are serious condition and in a life threatening condition so yes indeed there is a lot of bloodshed that has been caused today by a verse and certainly that has to be condemned but obviously in the current political situation in germany and in the whole of europe the fear always is that this is a terrorist attack to something like this could have been put if you can emerge of a to. in the heated political situation in europe where the question of migration the question of islamist. terrorists hiding in european society is this is something that is of politically. a lot of political significance and every country is including germany is are doing everything they can to prevent exactly
9:10 pm
such attacks so if such attacks do happen they are regarded as particularly serious in a sense as a failure of the security authorities on the other hand if it is. a mentally disturbed person who commits such attacks then the authorities will say well we could never have predicted you tell us a little bit more about what a typical saturday afternoon in this city would have looked like as we've heard from daniel it's very picturesque and beautiful university town lot of young people there it's a it's a regional magnet for tourism it's a very historic old town and city and we can actually see here in this picture behind of no yeah i think we can see it quite well this is probably what it looked like just the moment the truck hits this is the keep in cal restaurant you can see the stats you off the keep. right here which is the head
9:11 pm
which is sort of in a mass called of the city the those were. a traveling salesman who would sell their wares in because they carried on that box is a mascot of the city of. restaurant there is named after the keep this is a traditional restaurant that brew their own beer this is for example if you know people in side of germany know for example the whole full house in munich this is those of the biggest traditional restaurant in munich and this is the equivalent to it amounts to is this is where tourists would go by locals would go to taste local food drink local beer and this is basically what the. the scene would look like would have looked like the moment the truck hit today so we don't know anything yet about the potential motive here of the suspect but given this location here i mean what does this say to you well obviously it's a location that is of great symbolic significance for the tone so whoever plans an attack will commit an attack in this location is trying to. in
9:12 pm
a sense hit the town itself you know. in that sense i think there will be feeding that. an incident in the heart of the city in almost literally the heart of the city. is over law. or should i say. who it's everyone you know it's everyone everyone will feel that they are are in some sense also victims of this so given that they're what are police advising at this hour well a little earlier i spoke to a family member who lives still lives in the city of. the police are putting out. messages to stay calm stay at home avoid the area around keep out void the city center of possible because if there's a police cordon around the crime scene but it's not like that they would drive around town with loud halos or anything like that people i spoke to him and said
9:13 pm
well what everything is quite calm right now. and you know when we look at this though for a lot of germans you know a vehicle being plowed into people this is bringing up memories for them right memories of the twenty sixteen attack at the christmas market right shy plats right that's right here in berlin just the wrong christmas time just over a year ago a year and a few months ago there was this huge truck a forty ton truck that was driven into a christmas market there were dozens of wooden stand. selling stores selling christmas food or christmas goods and hundreds of people in fact on that square at the time in the evening and that was a terror attack that the person driving this truck had stolen the truck and was an islamist who was in fact known to the authorities they have been following him for a while and steaua not able to prevent this attack obviously
9:14 pm
a so that was the worst terrorist attack that happened in germany for a very very long time and since then there has been an attempt an attempt to secure public places where there are regular gatherings of large crowds of people market places places such as pedestrians where this happened today in basically secure them by putting up barriers by putting up concrete blocks for concrete barriers by restricting large vehicles from entering those areas in this case today that was not possible it's a small street and obviously a very large trucks could not even have gotten that far but a truck of the size of a delivery van need to go into that area every day presumably there was no barrier there to prevent that from happening and that reality of everyday life that is something that citizens are also acknowledging in fact a short while ago i spoke with one of the citizens there in munster and i'd just like to play that for our viewers now we spoke with resident peter vamp i began by
9:15 pm
asking him to describe the scene in his hometown have a listen we are for you was about three hundred thousand people here and very very old hundred fifty thousand students and of course the story shows they are you able to close really really good work so it was about twenty three twenty four degrees in the afternoon. many many people who were in the city and. produce plays work with all their interest directly into the old tone let's say where it's really really busy place. tell us a little bit more about this area peter if you will you know where this this alleged attack took place the world removed you must that a lot of progress.
