and i was on a welcome to the program three people have been killed and around thirty others injured after a van plowed into a crowd of people at side a busy restaurant and minster in northwestern germany the driver of the van shot himself shortly after the incident police have so far ruled a islam as terrorism as a motive while local media have suggested is that the perpetrator could have been suffering from psychological issues. a picture that captures the moment carnage at the historic costs of minster it was the days east of times diners enjoying the first days of spring into foster spawn there's an eyewitness described the kid also as a van charged into the crowd. i heard a loud bang screaming and then the police arrived and everyone was sent outside. i didn't see much just lots of people running away screaming. i'm sorry for those who

were caught up in this it's a shock to all of us employees for visitors i know that i'm angry it's cowardly to do something like this. the driver a forty eight year old german citizen turned the gun on himself after killing several people and hearting dozens more reports in the german media suggest he was suffering from mental illness the mayor sounded a defiant note and said the city was grieving but taught and he taught all of munster is mourning this horrible incident. our sympathy is with the relatives of those who were killed. we wish the injured a quick recovery. this alleged attack which struck us out of the blue is an attack on our city and we must now stand together more than ever to defeat the scourge of violence so. it is

a gossip about the minds of so busy. they are coming together but never sniffs lingers after a deadly day that has painfully reminded this country of the many threats it faces . well then star is no cases in the german states of north or i invest fallen states interior minister gave this statement a press conference earlier today two people were killed and the perpetrator kills himself he was a german national and not a refugee there is no sign of an islamist background yes. well for more on the story now we are going to cross over to our correspondent in a home free and cope standing by for us in munster and i'm going to start off first
12:04 am
of all with you danielle people were killed and they were injured today in a beautiful mediæval says he done has just been plunged in to shock what more do we know about the victims well we know that the dozens were injured and we are also hearing that still some of them are in a critic edition we don't know anything about the identity off the true that were killed we only got a statement from the restaurant where all of this was actually taking place that among the victims was unknown off their employees. ok so let's just turn back to hell a in a for a moment and you know ask what kind of steps can the police take their. hi and well the steps that they have taken is that completely cordoned off this
12:05 am
area behind me we're about as close as we can get about one hundred meters from the keep an account of cloud pavane us been closed off for her since about three pm today and now they have evacuated the area i've been speaking to a local police here i said it must be the end of a long day they say it's only just beginning and making sure that nobody comes around this area we also understand that armed police and bomb disposal squads have gone into the apartment of the perpetrator around two kilometers from here to track for any suspicious material that will say how to approach the vehicle of course we caution bearing in mind that there were reports of a suspicious object inside this operation now is going on long into the night even though most of the residents and the people that would be on the streets normally i around eighty percent of you know students for example would be out today very and see on a warm spring evening so they're making sure that they say area stays closed as the

investigations continue. so as the investigations continue they have evacuated that area and they have cordoned off and of course nice house to fall in there on a very shocked stacy daniel what is the mood like right now. well this is kind of a surreal atmosphere here at the moment as helena just mentioned big parts of the city are still locked down also still investigation going on at this apartment complex i actually have somebody here with me who is from minster who was here in the city when all of this happened tell me a little bit how you found out about this and how would you describe the atmosphere here at the moment well i was walking past strangers and they were talking about the situation and i just heard them talking about it and i check my phone there and i saw something a code and i was pretty shocked as well and then the whole situation around us so it was all shocked and i was in a cafe and everyone was checking the phones to all time getting messages and that's

from a troll thank you very much for sharing this information that with us let me also tell you that i do have the feeling that many people here in the city are at the moment relief we heard this from the interior minister little bit earlier that it seems that all of this does not have any kind of a link to terrorism at least of course people here are very sad very touch we're also hearing that tomorrow at seven thirty pm there's going to be a big memorial church service taking place here in the city of mr. right so there seems to be obviously shock and a great sense of relief that there seems to be no islam is connection at the moment however nevertheless it's still certainly evokes memories of the twenty sixteen christmas market attack in berlin how worrying is this would you say. well i think daniel makes
12:08 am
a very important point too and he also points out the fact that the interior minister if a north rhine-westphalia was at pains to rule out as quickly as possible in light of the investigations that there does not appear at this stage to be a islamist motive as i spoke to people here as i came into the town i spoke to one man who was a taxi driver from pakistan and he said when i heard about the attack i stopped working when i found out that it was likely a german citizen who had committed this attack i knew i could go back out working because he said as soon as people hear about an attack like this he feels that people look at him in a way which makes him feel very uncomfortable so it's very important that the ministry the interior ministry has pointed out that there appears to be no islamist motive at this time because let's remember germany indeed the continent has been paralyzed by the fear of a further islamist attack we've seen vehicles weaponized in the united kingdom in france in stockholm indeed a year ago to this day and this is something that people thought about when they
12:09 am
heard about this attack i said to people as i was coming into the city were you shocked people were shocked and they did say you know you wouldn't expect it to happen here but they haven't ruled out the possibility that something like this could happen again something like we'd see at but i chide plots in bali in december twenty sixth or in back in bavaria those kind of attacks which we had seen on german soil. so there have been other attacks on german soil what could have driven this suspect to do such an extreme thing. and i'm going to direct that. something that we can't speculate ok. at this point we still don't really know what happened as i said the interior minister stated that he doesn't believe at this point that this is related to terrorism we are hearing about all of this has not been confirmed yet by the police that the suspect had already shared in the past

a possible thought that he would want to commit suicide there has been a report by german media by the german t.v. station said he after that apparently by the end of march he was sending a message to some friends and relatives and now in saying that he would indeed commit suicide we're also hearing that he was most likely a member here of very right wing party or organization in the state of north rhine-westphalia but at this moment all of this has not been yet confirmed by the police we're also not expecting any more police statements tonight it's midnight right now here in germany more information most likely will be released by the german authorities tomorrow well as we wait for that information to be verified let's just turn to you eleanor for a moment and talk about is the responses from the numerous officials including the
12:11 am
mayor of munster and the spokesperson for the chancellor of markel. for chancellor merkel rather how do their reactions compare to the burlington christmas market attack of twenty sixteen which was the worst attack germany had seen in decades. well of course you expect to have that fit figurehead response from federal government and indeed that's what we saw with the statement from the spokeswoman for the chancellor angela merkel saying that we deeply shocked an offshoot of with the victims and their families she also went on to say that we have full confidence in the investigation and the work done by the first responders in the first responders and the police were quick on the scene edgy to the fact that there was a pro kurdish rally taking place in the city at the time so they were disbanded and moved to the site of where the vehicle had actually rammed into the crowd so
12:12 am
we have that condolence and not putting together a message from the chancellor and that was echoed as well by the president to steinmeyer the man has said that as we look into the victim into the perpetrators motives we mustn't forget that two people were killed today in that awful so with the victims two people lost their lives and that was certainly the response from the man the local authorities here are making sure that people understand that they shouldn't be around the cordoned off area and they clear the area at around three thirty pm central european time not certainly the role on the ground here and they're also saying to people please do not speculate please do not perpetrate a room as do not circulate rumors and spread them on social media that was one of the first responses and again then we have. a message from the interior minister of north rhine-westphalia that this does not appear to be linked to an islamist motive at the moment we do not know what the motive is now this investigation will be conducted on a local and regional levels at the north growing best fadia police level for the
12:13 am
moment if it is then discovered that there is a political motive it will then go to the level of the federal police currently there liaising and exchanging information but this investigation is not currently in the hands of the federal police in terms of who is leading the investigation has in the home free and will be returning to you in monster where they are covering the latest on the deadly attack. there are some of the other stories making news around the world. that there's any and media are reporting the former president has returned has turned himself into authorities after he missed friday's deadline for an earlier arrest warrants it was convicted of corruption and money laundering in july of last year and faces a twelve year jail sentence. and hungry are preparing to go to the polls in sunday's general election prime minister viktor orban who's opposed to allowing
