bangladesh. slobbers are starting to be twenty first one g.w. . this is d w news live from berlin negotiations to reach a final agreement over the eastern city of bluto in july are underway in syria the news comes after rebels in the area say more than forty people have been killed in a chemical attack the rebels blame the government and say the death toll is likely to rise the offside regime calls the allegations a fabrication and also coming up police in the german city of minster are now
1:01 pm
scrambling to understand why a man deliberately drove a van into a crowd killing two people authorities say there is no evidence of an islamist connection but they're investigating all possibilities will go live to the seams. and voting is underway in hungary is it a general election where prime minister viktor orban is expected to secure a third term on casting his ballot or running a populist anti migration campaign said he was fighting for the future of hungary close alliance to budapest. hello and welcome to the program i'm marion and we begin in syria where it's being reported that rebels are now ready to negotiate a pullout from duma in eastern guta. move comes just hours after dozens of people
1:02 pm
were killed in a suspected chemical weapons attack there it organizations say at least one bomb filled with poisonous chemicals was dropped on duma which is the last major rebel stronghold near the capital damascus and syrian regime and its ally russia call those allegations a fabrication. and for more on the story we're joined now by a correspondent on child maura who is monitoring the situation from beirut in neighboring lebanon so on shiloh what's the latest you can tell us about the suspected attack. well what we have heard from syrian american medical society and my talents which are a group of medics and activists working on the ground there yesterday evening of a quarter to eight in the evening barack containing a chemical agent was dropped in a part of the city and they started receiving a lot of patients and the patients a speed signs like excessive or reforming which led the medics to conclude that
1:03 pm
they've been attacked with a poisonous gas now all the videos that have been shared by these activists and medics on the ground with us of course the images are quite graphic they say that it is likely a chemical agent has been used but that of course cannot be verified verified until and unless you talk to a legitimate authority on the ground. all right well the images cannot be verified but just how credible are the claims from the syrian opposition groups should we believe them. well you've got to look at the history of chemical warfare in syria the regime in the beginning said they do not have any chemical weapons later they did admit to in fact they did have a mustard gas and sarin gas and the russians then explain to the americans that instead of attacking syria it would be better that if a deal is struck on the stockpiles can then be eliminated entirely this began in two thousand and thirteen and by the end of two thousand and thirteen it was believed that syrian stockpiles we have completely been eliminated box there
1:04 pm
continues to be a doubt so the experts continue to suggest that perhaps only the known stockpiles of the syrian regime had eliminated or not all of it and it is suspected that the regime actually hid a certain amount of syrian weapons. in the basement or perhaps have made more with the help of the local scientists and that doubt continues to be that and hence there would always be the suspicion on the regime. all right well the regime began this offensive in eastern guta and february and as you've been saying this is not the first time that rebels are accusing the us and regime that using chemical weapons what is different this time around. well according to the regime there ever a point of view is that this is all a fabrication and rebellion propaganda not just because the rebels are losing ground and every time the regime is winning an area rebels come up with such allegations but essentially to significant because the rebels and are asking for
1:05 pm
international support and now it is on the international community to see what they will do essentially the united states how they are going to respond to this it is also significant because gesture islam which is the dominant group on the ground according to their own media group and according to syrian regime media is a media channel and the final round of negotiations have begun so with this final assault to say now whether if i don't know whether legit or not will this then finally lead to a solution on duma city and in a way sort of help thousands of civilians most i'm stuck there all right correspondent porting for us from beirut many thanks indeed. here in germany police are trying to work out the motive behind a tragic attack in the city of minster which took place on saturday two people were killed and dozens more were injured when a man crashed his van into a crowd outside a busy restaurant in the historic center of the city which is located in the country's northwest driver then shot himself dead inside his vehicle police have so
1:06 pm
far ruled out islamist terrorism as a motive and here's a look at how the tragic events unfold. a picture that captures the moment carnage hit the historic heart of minster it was the busiest of times diners enjoying the first days of spring. responders an eyewitness described the chaos as a van charged into the crowds. i heard a loud bang screaming and then the police arrived and everyone was sent outside i didn't see much just lots of people running away screaming. i'm sorry for those who were caught up in this it's a shock to all of us employees for visitors i know that i'm angry it's cowardly to do something like this. the driver a forty eight year old german citizen turned the gun on himself after killing

linked to two cables as well we've just heard from the interior minister horst see who for who has been here who's paid his respects let's take a listen to what he said a little earlier. again and we've seen that despite all the efforts of the government to protect our citizens there's unfortunately no such thing as absolute security. but we still have to do everything that's not power to prevent crimes like these from happening what is this so inconceivable to us so we must do everything we can to try to stop as many of these crimes from happening as possible in the future. so that was germany's interior minister is saying absolute security is impossible
1:10 pm
now hannah how are residents coping with such a terrifying attack in their city. well of course this sense of shock sadness a sense of disbelief as well that something like that could happen here. the mess saying that this kind of thing does not happen here this is a peaceful tolerant kind of a place where any kind of serious thing in crime shows that set there is the feeling as well that life goes on that people stand together and people don't want to see the daily pleasures like having a coffee or an ice cream on a tear is taken away from them. helena humphrey reporting from minster thank you. now to some of the other stories making news around the world and in new york one person has died and four firefighters were injured in a blaze on the fiftieth floor of trump tower officials said the fire in the u.s. president's signature building was quickly put out and the victim was

a male resident of the building who died after being brought to the hospital france's rail network is suffering major disruption once again a third of real workers walked off the job sunday in protest against the government's plan to overhaul of the state run rail system the strikes are part of an ongoing dispute set to last for three months. elections are underway in hungary where a nationalist prime minister viktor orban is widely expected to win a third consecutive term polls predict or bonds fetus party which has campaigned on an anti immigrant to euro skeptic want to form will win a majority together with the christian democrats but growing unity among opposition parties is putting or bind margin of victory in down to his will need a two thirds super majority to pass sweeping reforms and w.'s funny french are is in budapest and she joins us now for the latest so funny polls have been open for several hours a what does turn out been like so far
1:12 pm
you have been open since six am this morning i've seen a long queues to lining up all the way all side of polling stations even on the lines of course that a lot of people feel motivated and mobilized to cast a ballot in fact there is a record voter turnout already at this hour compared to twenty fourteen already want food of the population eligible to vote cast their ballot that clearly tells you this people really want to participate today because they think that even though according to pollsters fit is going to win little people i've talked to say no this is not a done deal yet it's very important that everybody is casting their ballot well or one himself has long been a collision course against the european union what would his reelection mean for the u. he's sad numerous times not only during this complaint but for several years now
1:13 pm
since he's in office what he wants is a different vision for the european union where the member states have more to say especially for example when it comes to the. us how to share certain asylum seekers' that for example hungary doesn't want so hungry definitely wants its own vision more sovereignty and this is what he had to say just after he cast his ballot this morning. well we have them there are. a member of the international organization and we are standing on the basis of the interest of our country because. we are fighting for the future of our country. all right so victor or bonzo's a close you of course of nations hungary first that's right viktor orban with a very and nationalist message to his electorate and yet saying he wants to cooperate. this message does seem to appeal to many voters in hungary funny and
1:14 pm
although it is does seem to be leading in opinion polls we are hearing that the raise might be actually tighter than expected why is that. is tied to it because there's so much at stake at this point that some people who are not inclined to go and cast a ballot all of a sudden a few more to waited which has to do for example one thing on march fifteenth promised to be to obama delivered a rather fierce speech saying that he's going to deal with the opposition not releasing what that opposition means whether he's referring to parties to people supporting to opposition parties or what remains of the critical media and a lot of people are really fed up with this rhetoric and they say i'm going to cast my ballot now regardless of what posters say and then again we have seen an independent candidate winning in a fetus stronghold and of february because a lot of parties united behind him so a lot is here at stake and people feel that the election could be shaken up today all right funny french are reporting for us from the hungary in capital budapest
1:15 pm
